I loved EverQuest back in the day. The newer versions and p99 not as much.

I would like to suggest Champions of Regnum, if people are after DAOC-lite.

If you are happy to play alone or know people, you can try Rift. They will surely shut that game down eventually. It has already gone about a decade with hardly any players.

If you play UO you could play EQ and see where WoW came from. But it is hard to find a good version of it to play. The official version is really bad I think. P99 is better but still has problems.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend Dungeons & Dragons Online.

It's a really fun game with many inventive and fun quests that differ from the standard MMO quest formula we're all used to. Fantastic build variety and it also has a lot of nice little tricks unique to its own, like an omniscient narrator who comments over your adventures (some of which are narrated by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson), and genuinely looks great for its time. Dungeons actually take into account character skills, with traps, hidden doors, etc. Genuinely fun game.

One of its issues is that the game is very beginner-unfriendly, however, there are a lot of inviting players in the community willing to lend a helping hand (You can also consult the wiki). Another is that since the game is free, there is a microtransactions shop with a lot of items ranging from small cosmetics (that you can't view on your model) to small-to-huge adventure packs (purchasable questlines) although the developers do regularly hand out discounts that you can use to get a lot of items for free.

One minor issue is that the game suffers from some technical hiccups, like how you can't scale the UI because all the Icons are fixed images which would result in a lot of visual mishaps, or how the game is prone to some visual glitches because the team is quite small and is managing another MMO (Lord of the Rings Online). But I'd still implore you to play it because a lot of the zones are genuinely well-designed and are a blast to explore.
