I can also recommend "Der Langrisser" it's one if not my favorite game, the orginal SNES version, not the remake though that is a bit more coherent gameplay wise.
For me, it's Langrisser 2 on the Mega Drive. In return for losing the branching campaign present in the later SFC version mentioned, you get (a lot!) more challenge. Patched to restore the art from the Japanese release, ofc. (or was that the first game that needed the art patch and the second game that needed a translation patch? I forget).

While the Ogre Battle games aren't the same as Tactics Ogre/FFT,

I've played and beaten march of the black queen(the snes one) on emulator back in the day, neat concept but I didn't care for it.

Definitely going to take a longer crack at the shining force games, Jeanne d'arc and the fire elblem games from reading this thread. mediocrepoet I've heard good things about the disgea games but I'm not sure I can handle the art style.

That's fair. Fire Emblem games tend to be really good and should eat up a lot of time. Same with the Front Mission games like others have said if you like genres other than fantasy. FM3 was fantastic and I hope they remake that.

Why play the remakes?

The original Front mission is great (a bit easy maybe), looks great and can be played via emulation.
I don't know what you're talking about the DS remake of the first one was great.
I didn't even know that there was a DS remake, I am refering to the original SNES version and "Front mission 1st" which looks like Legos.

Thanks bros. What a fantastic list to go through. Talk about keeping us busy

Oh yes, there is also Phantom brave (Free moving, not tile based) and Soul Nomad (a bit like March of the black queen) since that style of gameplay was mentioned, both are very animu though, but we are moving the target by now.

Ogrebattle 64 is also really good when you are willing to go into that direction.

I have also a sweet spot for "chroma squad" but that one is special, not sure if that is a theme you would like it's pretty on point with it's cheesyness, it's a bit easy though.

You can give Vandal Hearts 1 another go, SAT version (superior to PS1 one) is now translated:

https://www.romhacking.net/translations/5770/

VH2 is also decent, completed it in June using the "Take Turns" hack, which fixes its bizarre original combat system:

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5400/

But! My holy trio chad quad after playing ~95% games mentioned ITT is:

1) Tactics Ogre - LUCT (SAT version is the definite one)
2) FFT (+ My Mod, which reduces grind for JP a lot)
3) Front Mission 3 (one of the most complex content-wise japtacticals - two scenarios, mini-internet, etc.)
4) Der Langrisser (Snes, remake of L2 for Genesis) and Langrisser I: The Art of the Swords War (Windows 9x, remake of L1 for Genesis) for reasons mentioned above:

Modern PC remakes of Langrisser 1&2 are nice, but much easier than Snes / PC remakes, which are easier than Genesis originals (but still quite hard).

Everyting else is IMO inferior to these 4 games, and Fire Emblem is ITZ own thing / different subgenre (permdeath, criticals, guides required for getting and using good units), etc. Give either FE4 for Snes, FE6 for GBA or FE9 for Gamecube a try, and if you like them, you can go back to Snes games and forward to NDS / 3DS games. Modern Fire Emblem games (Switch) are IMO cancer, mostly for gameplay-related reasons, but writing and characters are even worse.

Basically it's the version the nuremake was remaking, they created a whole second campaign for it and had the same visual style as the Snes one. Would have been cool if they did the same thing to the second game back then. https://www.mobygames.com/game/36800/front-mission/

You know, I kind of want to hate you for modding out the most unique combat system in a tactical game I've ever seen, but it was really goofy to be fair. I enjoyed it myself though, felt like a puzzle of predicting the AI moves and countering them.

I hated that system. Bounced off the game because of it.

Ah yes, I remember when Soul Nomad came out. Have both that and Phantom Brave on my weeshleest.
Already noted OB since it's the first in the trilogy. Will absolutely play them. I love medieval settings with absolutely no exceptions.
Chroma Squad looks awesome. I love sentai. My favorite part of God Hand is when you fight the sentai knock-offs.
