You do realize DosBox doesn't need to be installed to run? Install it yourself, install U7, set everything up, archive it, email him the archive. I'm assuming he can unpack an archive and double-click a shortcut? ;)

Then again U7 will probably turn him off because teh grafix are old...

The graphics are fine, I think, even by today's standards. Looks like a gameboy game. It's the ass backwards view I think alot of people would have trouble adapting to.

No, actually I didn't know that as I've never messed with DosBox much. I have a separate box with Win95 and DOS when I want to play the old shit. DosBox is for pussies. I'll look into that though, that could be a viable solution for some older stuff for him to try.

Either way, it's sure to prove a challenge and an eye opener for someone weaned on recent mainstream titles!

I would wager that the pace, incohearance, and overall drearieness of the game will conceal the more universal qualitties. Gamers just have an almost compulsive desire to do everything and in games like Fallout and Arcanum you cant do everything.

So, after hours of debating with my console-tard cousin to try out the RPG genre, he's finally agreed to step up to the challenge. I've assigned Fallout 2 as his first order of business.
Bad choice. Fallout 2 is ridiculous.

Now, I decided Geronimo will not be relying on theft a great deal, since we’ve noted all along he’s a tactful type of guy with a strong moral system. On the spur of moment, I decide that I will never steal from fellow tribesmen, but everyone else is fair game. That is, normally I’d follow that system. It just so happens that for now, I need to buy Sulik’s freedom, and stealing his leather jacket to sell to Maida will benefit him considerably.

the LARP is strong in this one. I like his writing style, though, sounds like a LP

I'm sure he rated BG2 at 98 or 99% but I can't find that list.
I did find an awesome thread in which he used Daggerfall to prove that Oblivion and FO3 are shit.

Yes he rated BG2 higher (99%, deserved, more like 90% but still deserved), but that wasn't the point. NWN 95% was his first RPG and introduced him to the genre. Can't blame him, it's not his fault he's pretty young.

Pool of Radiance was it for me. 99% !!!111!

After Fallout 2 I would recommend either PS:T or Jagged Alliance 2, depending on exactly how much you want to torture how and/or what type of game he likes better. The three give a pretty good breadth of experience in the genre.

Wow, Skyway is that young?

I mean, I'm 23, but my first RPG was Fallout.

Icewind Dale, Odium, and Betrayal at Krondor. After he's done with those three he can play Morrowind or Wizardry 8.

How many of you guys were even around before the Atari 2600 hit in 1977, let alone were old enough to play RPGs on your PC and turn your nose up at the "console generation"?

I started playing my games on a cassette tape on a TRS-80, not that shitty 2600 stuff. I've paid my dues and DO in fact turn up my nose to the shit that's shoveled out today and called a "next gen" RPG.

Hmmm

TOEE is out, purely because he'll hate it after literally 3 hours of Hommlet.

Wizardry 8 is out, because he will hate it after the 20th 30 minute battle with some randomly spawned animals

BG2 and Icewind Dale aren't really old school, especially BG2, it's too easy for him, it's like making him play a good version of Dragon Age

Betryal at Krondor might be a stretch with that first generation 3d

Arcanum is too uneven, it's just an inferior and less appealing Fallout.

PS:T and Ultima VII are too talky.

Vampire Bloodlines, Gothic and Morrowind are too easy again, it's not far enough from modern games.

No, the proper choices are as follows:

Dark Sun the Shattered Lands, Jagged Alliance 2 (do NOT use 1.13) and Might and Magic 7.

Not necessarily the best games, but the proper ones for this challenge.

Dark Sun being the ideal choice, JA2 being a great choice but not really a pure RPG, and MM7 being a bit of a weak choice.

They are a lost cause, they can't be saved. Every time you try to tell them the truth(s), that most modern games are for retards and some older games were way better, they start screaming "get away from me, I don't want to catch your nostalgia". They're like a brainless army, paying full price for popamole 4-hour long shit and then waiting for the next "next gen" blockbuster.

Honestly, I think they look better than Fallout, so it might work.

To make U7 run in DOSBox, you just need to disable expanded memory; to do this, just set "ems=false" in dosbox.conf, the configuration file.

You might try U6 first instead of U7, if he can put up with small view and primitive controls. Or, *gasp* the Ultima Underworlds which doesn't have mouselook.

I'm doing something similiar with a college buddy. He's loaded up and played a little Alpha Centauri. I also lent him Dungeon Keeper, Fallout, and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I kind of envy him getting to play classics for the first time. Verdict's still out, of course, but he seems commited to giving things a fair try.

I'm close. I had an Intelivision and a Commodore 64. I remember playing CRPGs with joysticks.

Set him up with Thief or Thief 2 next.

Other choices, TOEE, Age of Wonders, M&M5 or 6, Ultima 6 or 7, Freelancer, Privateer, SS2 or DOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM!

Ultima 7. It's VGA 256 colors, which is more than enough for any graphic whore.

Warn him there's no compass, nor journal to keep track of his progress. But show him the things that make Ultima VIi the greatest game it is and why every RPG nowadays tries to shove us amazing features when ultima vii had all of them and better.

The interface is no problem: it's all mouse driven.

Come on, the 2600 didn't have any RPG's, wargames, etc, worth the name. It was classic console time. The next gen consoles (NES and Sega MS) had better RPG's on them if you are that way inclined.

True brilliance didn't arrive until the Apple II and, slightly after that, C64 when it comes to CRPG's. The PC's (IBM's and compatibles) during this age (70's and early to mid 80's) were laughable when it came to gaming.

Every other system (Atari computers, TRS's, BBC Micro's, Spectrums's, etc) had nothing that wasn't on the mentioned computers when it comes to CRPG's. Mentioning the 2600 is only name dropping without substance in this context.

"Geronimo considers arguing against the merits of fighting, but decides he's too diplomatic to disagree."

This is the best thing in that blog.
