Yeah, and as for me the main downside of that review is that it is full of usefull tips, and those are things which I should have discovered on my own. :argh:

I had just been thinking about making an encouraging post that, as the review points out, once you have access to the teleport spell navigation becomes much less a hassle. Still, I didn't see the article mention the joys of graphing your own maps, only the bit about the limited magic map. And in passing, I would add the writing in Wizadry 7 is excellent, even better than 8. That is the one detail EG truly lacks, a strong descriptive narrative and world/dungeon populated NPCs.

I just bought this. Spent 2 hours rolling characters with high stats, entered dungeon, got lost, got destroyed, found the way out on my last legs with 2 characters alive, now I'm gonna roll new characters for another hour or so.
Already lovin the game!!
Unfortunately the interface is stupid as shit tho, even for console standards :(

The Dwarven Halberd rocks. Enhanced with a little alchemy, and I've been taking names like nobody's business!

There are some dungeon floor monsters to whom I will paying a visit again.

It's on 50% sale on gog.com

How is the game? Pure dungeoncrawler or some dialogue and quests, too?

Very early-wizardry like (haven't played the early wizardries, but from what you hear they are like this). It has quests and a bit of dialogue but it's basically all about the dungeon crawling. Character creation is fun (if you enjoy stat rolling for quite a while), leveling up not as much. Your stats can delevel on lvl up so I found myself save scumming unfortunately.

It's quite good tho and probably one of the best turn based blobbers on PC right now, if you don't count the classics.

The graphics are good too (meaning not anime-style), but it is very grindy with hardly any storyline to speak of. Combat itself and the character system are very similar to Wizardry, which is a good thing.

Thanks at you both.
It doesn't sound bad but I'll give it a pass for now. I have still Wiz 6/7 in the pipeline to play which is a bit more storydriven I guess. Wow, never thought that there will be a time again when I have more rpgs to play than I have time for.

Yeh Wizardry VI is way better imho. I also enjoy storydriven blobbers more than just mindless grindfests. Wizardry VII I have yet to play

You should, then. It's the best of the later Wizardries.

I read that everywhere, it's just that I am a bit overwhelmed with the prospect of drawing all these outdoor maps

Altho there's obviously an automap-mod now, I should really try that.

Wiz 7 had its own automap anyway, and based on how good your skill was the map was actually useful

true, but it was worth it

biggest problem with Elminage is the interface, that makes 20 years old games looks advanced in comparison

Well for the automap mod you need to invest skillpoints in the cartographer skill too afaik, so that's at least something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

With the automap mod you have a large map that's also always available. Still :decline: tho, I know

But in the advanced age we're living in you have resolutions and screens big enough that you can run the game on it and drawing digital maps with grid cartographer on the same time!

True but grid cartographer is 20 $ and due to some recent RL-stuff 20 bucks for a digital map drawing tool wouldn't really be a clever expense :?

also, Wiz 7 is big enough that it becomes a bit of a pain to map maps per hand, whether on paper or in grid cartographer

Let me know if you want me to buy you Grid Cartographer. (Proof of using it for playing Wiz 7 required.)

Hmm, I think it has a trial version. Alternatively there are or were some free dungeon mapping tools on the net a few years back for pnp rpgs. Or as a last resort you can still use excel like the crpg addict.

EDIT: or take crooked bees offer!

I'm not sure if using excel that way is a last resort or just plain crazy, but then it's crpg addict, the only man who manages to faithful write about cool crpgs without an iota of joy in most of his writings about the very topic

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
Not a popular opinion but I suggest cheating and using the maps/walkthrough that game with the archives version. The game still takes 100 hours and is still hard as balls.

I think the only maps I had to draw by hand in Crusaders was New City, before acquiring the Journey Map Kit, and some end game dungeons with teleporters and dark zones.

Also, Elminage Gothic, is the sort of game you have to dig deep but can find quite a bit of surprises. There always seems to be new content opening up, returning to previous visited areas, even if the quests aren't that involved. Still, they have their own quirks and challenges that make the gameplay worthwhile. The story is interesting enough that you'll want to pay attention to the details.
