CDPR is a modern AAA company. Those generally don't mix well with RPGs, and IIRC they lost a ton of devs from the Witcher series during CP2077's development.
People make games great. Companies don't, so my expectations for any upcoming CDPR titles are low, though I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise.

I always thought the "style over substance" line in CP2077 was just the game being self aware.

Witcher 1 was the most authentic Witcher game.

Witcher 2 was a train wreck of bad decisions, gameplay, and console retardation.

Witcher 3 was a fantastic story driven game written around bad mechanics and bad design decisions. If they had extended the time with Geralt's friends/party and less with the Skyrim clone stuff, it would have played to its strengths (and modders could have fixed the rest as a bonus), and been a fantastic game instead of a good one that I'm hesitant to replay.

Edit: Also, if W4 has Ciri as the protagonist, people are gonna be mad. Geralt might be thrown in as Ciri was in W3, but I still think most gamers are straight guys who don't play as girls/women.

Female protagonists fucking suck. A game like Control would've unironically been 10x better with a dude. It works in movies, but something about female protagonists just really fucking sucks to play, especially when the game is first/third person. If I was playing an Adepta Sororita or a Sister of Silence, I could see myself being down, but outside of these few exceptions, oof.

Yeah, completely agree, if they make Ciri the protagonist, I am out. Can't play as them, kills muh immersion. She also had horrible gameplay, with her OP dash dodge. Geralt was already OP, and she was even more OP. If anything, they should go in the other direction and make you play as a regular warrior/knight in that universe with regular fighting moves.

To the OP: Yes, I believe so, because the fact is, they haven't made a terrible game yet. W2 is my least favorite but even that one had some redeeming qualities. W1 was very solid, and W3 a masterpiece. CP2077 after the patches is a good game as well. Now will they? Only time will tell, but the talent is definitely there.

I never claim every other game is shit. I am very objective and not swayed by the hivemind here, examples below:

Total shit: Cuckfinder: Poncemaker, Elden Ring, ELEX 2, D:OS 1/2, Outer Turds, every Bethesda game ever, Dragon Ass: Origins, etc.

Masterpieces: Witcha 3, BotW, KCD, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Expeditions: Vikings, Battle Brothers, Subnautica, Dark Souls 1, etc.

Overrated in-betweens: AoD, Underrail, Dark Souls 2, Pillars of Dullernity.

Okay, I can get a lot of criticisms about Elden Ring, but calling Elden Ring total shit without explaining your statement comes across as lazy/contrarian/trolling.

As for Witcher 3, I believe it was popular because while it didn't do too much that was truly new, it DID manage to integrate systems replicated from other games into a functional whole.

Similar thing with Elden Ring, I believe.

As for CDPR...Well, given that they seem to have noticed that Cyberpunk Edgerunners has brought positive attention to the franchise and actually patched some references to it into CP2077 proper, they at least seem to be learning something.

That much said, I put their odds at about 50/50, and if they're going to get their reputation back, they're going to need to get their act together and proceed slowly and very cautiously.

Elden Ring was total shit because:

It's basically a combat-fag game, the days of relatively intelligent gameplay of Demons Souls/Dark Souls 1 and the tight world are long gone, so it's just a huge game full of combat, and the combat sucks ass. They tried to please all the twitchy retards who want MORE CHALLENGE, and made every boss/powerful enemy have retarded unpredictable attacks, infinite stamina, 360 degree tracking, insane movement patterns, etc. So the methodical and logical combat of DaS1 where anyone could master it with practice is gone, and replaced with some shit where a 20 year old with good reflexes might be able to do it, but everyone else is stuck using some cheese, like summons or OP weapon arts or whatever.

All the Witcher games have horrendous combat. W1 is just attrition, W2 has you 'casting' attacks as spells under the hood, and W3 damage is so absurdly level-scaled none of your equipment or stats matter.
