Is this built on a commercial engine like Unreal or Source, or is it all in-house?

This wasn't really on my radar until I looked at a couple of video reviews and I'm definitely intrigued now.

Unreal engine 3

In the gameplay vids I saw the enemies have zero peripheral vision and have a spotting distance of about 2 meters and even the most piddly of shadow will completely hide the PC.

I haven't really followed this game much and can't be arsed to read this thread. Anyone want to give me the highlights on the Kritikal Kodex Konsensus so far? Looks good or looks like shit?

Noone played it yet. Expect true bitching to begin in a manner of hours tho. I for one am looking forward to my pre pre-order demo.

PC options:

Looks good. Most of that retarded helper shit can be disabled.

Looks really good.

First helpfull reasons why this game is shit are surfacing with those who have played it.

this game is so rediculously frustrating, you forget to save after awhile and when you finally die it's so much damn time lost and it's even more annoying when you gotta redo some things

This game is fine.
They game is either good or shit, there is not 'fine'.

SEEMS FINE SO FAR. I can't say it's great after trying for just an hour and a half and I haven't seen anything that seemed shit either. Or maybe I'm not seeing how shitty it is because I'm not playing the right way. I'm playing on Very Hard, turning off popamole helpers I don't like along the way. I'm a having a FINE time with it. I bet youtube videos played by retards on shit difficulty will be way more informative to you elite gentlemen.

So, is the game genuinely good or just another over-hyped piece of shit? Everything seems to point at the first option, i'm surprised.

I will play it tonight. I like Deus Ex, Deux Ex Human Revolution, Thief II and Half-Life. I disliked Half-Life 2 and hated Bioshock. Those are the games "gaming journalists" are comparing it to, so... we'll see.

For someone else – someone who has a lot of numbers in the name they use when playing Halo 4, say – it will be insultingly short. It may not even make a double figures quantity of hours. That’s not the game’s fault, it’s theirs (or, perhaps, the fault of the marketeers who sold the game as an action opus). They gobbled the onion up whole, too greedy or too lazy or too accustomed to inflexible fare to peel apart its layers.
...
Let us have this one expensive, luxurious game that only truly works, only sings a glorious tune, only becomes a 20+ hour game if met by those who treat it in the spirit with which it is offered.

I spend a bit of time moseying through the party and chatting with the guests, mosts of whom only have one line or so to repeat to me.
Often, that line is a variant on “I wonder if the lady’s diary is upstairs in her room?”, and after the fifth NPC straight-up told me that the Lady Boyle’s diary was upstairs and would tell me which dress she was wearing, I spitefully resolved to work it all out for myself.

GON: It’s cool because there’s a lot of ways up the stairs, but it still felt a bit railroad-ey. What did people do before you put these clues in?

Julien: People would just walk around.

:hmmm:

So the game tries to push the player to rush right to the objective, because otherwise they'd "just walk around." RPS decides to preempt criticism of this by blaming it on "greedy" and "lazy" gamers (same RPS that said gamers who didn't like the end of Mass Effect 3 were entitled). The response of RPS readers?

"Thank you."
"Yes. Bravo."
"That is why I read RPS. *clap* *clap* *clap*"
"When I first finished reading this article, comments were disabled. I thought that was great decision since no fuckhead could start a flamewar by being idiotic under this brilliant article. Now I see they were enabled, and I am pleasantly surprised to see comments being very nice. Cannot wait for Dishonored. Game of the year, calling it now."

This is why we can not have good things.

It reminds me of hitman in that you can usually waltz in if you're so inclined. The fun however is in subtlety. And yeah, levels are at first sight small. Then when you go off and look around they turn out to be way bigger than you anticipated.

And no, the game does not push you to the objective. Au contraire, to do so is to miss out on all the fun. Turn off the objective marker and go look around. In fact, turn off all markers why you're at it and play at least on hard.

EDIT: Decided to let my pre-order stand. I'm enjoying this 'demo.'

First impressions are good, though I feel Blink should have had a mana cost. Playing on Very Hard with all retard aids off is satisfying so far. I was somewhat disappointed when I couldn't complete an optional objective without the retard marker but Harwey assured me on Twitter that it was an anomaly and that (unlike certain other games) they really have gone to lengths to make sure it's designed without the markers in mind.

Seriously folks, this and DX:HR are the ideal evolution of "AAA", a good game that has optional aids to make it playable by retards.
