They fucked Frank's VA again, which is weird because they worked with him on RE2Remake and MvC:Infinite in the role of Frank West after the Dead Rising 4 backlash.

Dead Rising returns with modern graphics!
More than just a remaster, this Deluxe Remaster is a full graphical overhaul of the first game in zombie-slaughtering action game series "Dead Rising."
This remaster has also been fully voiced, supports auto-saves, and has various other quality-of-life features.
Witness the unmatched mayhem and freedom for yourself!
Keyart.png

- Story:
One day, the peaceful town of Willamette, Colorado, found itself put under quarantine by the U.S. army.
Frank West, a freelance journalist, smells a scoop and finds his way into the only shopping mall in town.
Unfortunately, the mall had turned into a living hell, crawling with countless zombies.
Help will arrive in 72 hours, so it's up to him to find out the truth behind this incident before it's too late!

- Realistic graphics reborn through RE ENGINE!
All of the graphics, including the characters and environments, have been renewed, and greatly improved over the original.
Character's facial expressions, material textures, and blood spatter all look much more realistic.
Overwhelming hordes of zombies fill the screen with completely remade graphics!

- Smoother and friendlier to play!
The gameplay of the original remains intact, but there are various quality-of-life improvements, such as auto-saving, revamped controls, improved UI, and many other details.
The game is now also fully voiced for improved immersion.

- Spend 72 hours the way you want!
The game takes place in a giant shopping mall.
Use regular weapons like guns and baseball bats, or use daily household objects. Anything goes when it comes to survival!
Rescue other survivors, and try out some new clothes while you're at it.
Just remember that under these extreme circumstances, it's not just zombies, but psychopaths you'll have to deal with as well. Who poses the biggest threat, zombies or humans!?

A longtime dream of mine would be for Dead Rising to have a mode where no items respawned. That would be a fitting way of making this almost perfect game even better.
The new voice actor is not.

I wonder if they will fix the AI companions.

Hopefully they don’t.

The AI companions don’t need fixing, they were perfectly fine for what the game is meant to be. The trick with the companions is you have to keep them moving. You set way points for them and they’ll push and fight their way right through groups of zombies. You tell them to go somewhere, and you don’t let them sit too long in places full of zombies. Once you figure out how they work, which should be pretty early in the game, it’s pretty easy and they’ll never die. You can have good size groups of them in the first game all loaded up with guns and unless you just leave them alone in a hoard of zombies they should be OK, not just OK but pretty helpful.

The companions in Dead Rising 2 were already pushing things too much with how they “fixed” them.

They should allow you to save the people at the beginning of the game this time. At a certain point in playing Dead Rising you will get good enough to clear out the mall entrance from the start of the game without anyone dying, but doing so does nothing since they’re all set to die anyone.

I’m not sure how good items not respawning would work. Dead Rising is a beat ‘em up. More specifically Dead Rising is a beat ‘em up in the style of River City Ransom. But in Dead Rising your currency to buy upgrades and items isn’t money dropped by enemies, it’s time. Will you spend the time to go here to get this or that? Items not respawning in Dead Rising would be like having shops that only sell something once in a game where shops are the only place you can get items, and all items will deteriorate with use.

The direction they’ve gone with Frank here is kind of funny. It’s Frank West from the beta version of Dead Rising. If you ever saw really earlier Dead Rising stuff, or you saw concept art, or some gameplay of the beta version, it’s this weirder looking Frank West.

Yes. It is already important in mastering the game to learn the map both to be efficient in getting around it and to know where to get the tools that you need.
But once you have played the game enough it becomes trivial to acquire an inventory full of powerful weapons. With that the sense of urgency and chaos is greatly reduced as you no longer have to make do with the sub-optimal tools you find along the way.

If most items were limited it would put your map knowledge to the test and combo it an element of planning. It would push you towards using mid tier weapons (those knives dropped by the yellow jacket zombies would be gold) a lot more often especially when dealing with random zombies in less important encounters. Boss weapons such as the mini-chainsaw would no longer trivialize the game, and it would make magazines/books important tactical decisions.
I reckon that there is already a pretty good balance of weapons in the game to make this a maddening fun challenge without much tweaking.
To make it more manageable maybe there could be janitor lockers in the toilets where you could store items.

I think that you are really underselling how hard and quirky herding those retarded sheep is. I find that later in the game they die and get stuck quite a lot (spamming the callout-button helps a lot to get them to snap out of what they're doing), and often escorting them takes a little bit longer than I have time for. But it is a skill issue and I enjoy it. Escorting in Dead Rising 2 was nowhere near as fun.

It’s only hard when you first start and you don’t really know how they really work. But it’s actually pretty easy once you understand that as long as you keep them moving they won’t get slaughtered. You set waypoints, you tell them to stay in some safe spot while you clear out some zombies, you don’t let them sit in zombie heavy places too long, you give them pistols (shotguns are good too, but you might also need to bring some health items if you’re handing out shotguns)... you’ll be fine. Whenever I was playing it a lot years ago I’d run around with fairly large groups of survivors, and give them guns to help me out. But the thing is you need to be telling them where to go, and you can’t just let them stop alongside you (especially if you haven’t given them weapons) if there’s tons of zombies around.

I’d say the problem people have with survivors is less an AI problem and more a player problem. You can send the survivors into a group of zombies, and as long as you command them to go somewhere else before they come to a complete stop they’ll more often than not push through the zombies and keep going on their way. You might have to jump in every once in a while, and if you take too long getting to the final point you sent them to they may end up getting surrounded, but that’s the game.

Remakes are the fucking bane of gaming. Every fucking good thing is remade and the artistry is watered down or lost. Fucking selling nostalgia instead of art, and consumers fucking consuming.

People like you will push them to "fix" them in a way that makes the game less fun. The survivors are a very rewarding challenge as they are, if they make them smarter it will make the game easier - and the game is supposed to be hard.
Honestly they should remove the escort missions. Most games don't have good escort missions and Dead Rising isn't the exception.

The developers of Dead Rising 2, 3 and 4? These are all better than the first game.

Let's be honest, the first Dead Rising introduced a rough proof of concept that got developed in the vastly superior sequels.

what made DR1 fun was the challenge of managing time efficiently and finishing as many things as you could within the time limit. The zombies are just an obstacle, not the real "enemy" you're fighting against.

The later games removed the restrictive time limits and as a consequence they're all way too easy and boring.

I haven't played 3 & 4, but DR2 has the same concept as DR1. You have like a few days to clear your name, uncover who's behind the outbreak, and escape with your daughter before the military goes in.

Yeah but the time limit in DR2 is a complete joke, it's basically just grand theft auto with zombies. Which is fun in its own way but not quite what made the first game so good.

It is deceptively similar on the surface, but underneath just about every little detail is worse in 2. Animations, sound, map design, weapon balance and their uses, quests and story, etc etc
They just didn't seem to get what the core of the Dead Rising experience was, so they fumbled it.

The slightly longer grab attack that zombies have in 2 makes me loose my shit. It is so frustrating and it serves no purpose as the survivors in 2 never get in danger anyways. The shorter grab in 1 was more dangerous because being fast actually mattered.

I have several times saved all survivors that are possible while also completing the cases, three times starting on level 1.
I know quite well how it works, towards the end of Day 2 it always gets much harder than what you are describing.

I liked 2, and the DLCs (shame they are stuck on the 360), but 3 and 4? Come on now.
