I have heard this game mentioned a number of times, especially in correlation to Deus Ex. I have no idea if it is an RPG, so forgive me if this is in the wrong forum.

Now, I quite like Deus Ex, and since this game has been mentioned in the same breath by a few users here, I wonder if people knowledgeable about this game could give me the run down, how alike it is to Deus Ex and their general impressions.

It's definitely more action oriented and linear than DE, uses similar "exp" system (skill points for progressing the game) but mechanically it's one of the better games I've played.
Shit, even Skyway liked it.
It's a source game and physics play a big part in it. Unlike HL2, which basically had "hey, hey, look, physics, see that, we've got gimmicky physics!", DM has it well implemented, not just a silly gimmick.
Of course it's fantasy, so expect orcs, spiders and necromancers instead of mechs but the game does a good job at delivering different experience depending on how you want to play it. I personally found playing on hardcore with an "assassin" approach the most satisfying.

It's a fun game, but no Deus Ex.
It's basically a fighting game, where you can specialize in either Might, Magic or Stealth, or use a bit of all.
Like Deus Ex most of the levels are quite open, which is good, but there is very little interaction with NPCs (I think all interaction is handled as cut scenes).
There is little C&C, and the story is cliche.
There is quite a bit of physics and interaction with the environs when figting, which is what the game really is all about. But there is too many traps obviously designed as the "right" way of defeating enemies.

But I thought it was a jolly fun game and I enjoyed, and in the end what really matters is wether it is enjoyable or not.
Playing it as a stealth game it reminded me more of Thief (on Normal level) than of Deus Ex, and based in-game references the designers were obvously fans of Thief.

Doesn't really have all that much in common with something like Deus Ex. Game's pretty much a rather short and linear combat-RPG. The combat's entertaining though, and the game's definitely worth a play-through.

Not sure I'd call the levels open. A few locations, maybe, but most of the time I thought it was rather corridor-like. That is, a route might have a couple of paths to choose from, but there was usually just the one route.

Well, not as open as Deus Ex and Thief, but still wide open compared to Splinter Cell.

- It isn't RPG just a pure action game.
- Which doesn't stop it from being enjoyable
- But I always thought I'm rather unique in liking it (as i sometimes like certain B grade games )

Similar to Deus Ex? No, I wouldn't say that. Apart from having an inventory and skills, there are no similarities whatsoever. Dark Messiah is a straight first person slasher with light RPG elements (skills, inventory, skill requirements for some items) and as such it's fairly linear. At the end, you can make a choice between following either the demon chick or the annoying mage chick and there are different endings - I think there are four in total - but other than that, it's linear and I don't see how anyone could associate it with Deus Ex. What it does have are secret areas within the level, as in the shooters of old.

What DM does great, however, is the combat and the way all classes play differently. Melee combat is great and feels very satisfying, and kicking is fun albeit overpowered (kicking enemies into sharp stakes at the wall or down a cliff is an insta-kill). I haven't played as an archer or a mage, but from what I've heard, they're very satisfying to play, too - the mage especially, with some spells that can affect the environment (setting fire to oil, for example). Playing around with the physics is fun, too.

While the story is alright, too, it's mostly a game you play for the combat, and the combat alone. It's definitely worth checking out, but don't expect it to be anything like Deus Ex, that will only end in disappointment. Expect to get a great action game, and you will have fun.

Nah, it's definitely a fun game. But then it pretty much had to be, with Arkane Studios( Arx Fatalis) and Floodgate Entertainment( with their former LGS employees) being the creators. Would have liked to see a more fleshed out sequel.

Last time I checked Arkane Studios were bought by Zenimax. I have pretty strong suspicion that they are helping Bethstapo make a better combat system for Skyrim. If that's true then at least Skyrim will turn out a good action game. Maybe they are working on a different game. Who knows...

I wish they pursue more games of the same vein. The engine is shit however. Took forever to load and the rope arrows didn't get enough usage out of its awesomeness. They need creativity.

NO.
And the boxed version does NOT require Steam.
Otherwise I would never have bought it.

Now I am confused.

I have seen the 'online activation' complaint on metacritic user reviews only 10 minutes ago though. Perhaps it depends on where it was released?

Yes, maybe that is the case.
My version, which I bought in Norway, have Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish flags on it, but game and manual is in English and above the bar code it says "Made in EUROPE".

EDIT: Oh, and " this product has not been rated by the BBFC and is not suitable for sale in the UK".

I got it on Steam (yeah, uh huh) and it's run flawlessly for me. It's aight. Skyway approves of it IIRC.

I was hoping it'd be like Severance: Blade of Darkness, but it's more arcade like than that. On hard you can get some hectic battles full of throwing random crap, kicking enemies down, etc etc.

I don't like how you can exploit certain stupid things like fire and spiked walls. Basically, if an enemy's arm slides into a spike than they're dead... same with fire.

Disabled, as I understand. Similar to what they did with Bioshock.

The game will not require Steam activation.

A lot of fun to be had, by the way. A run-through will be less than 10 hours, but you'll get a decent 3 separate runs of sandboxy physics-augmented combat with a competent stealth system, great scripted moments and very clean visuals. Recommended.

I have the UK version and it forces you to use Steam, so yeah, seems to depend where you're from.

Good game, though. Make sure to get the latest patch; it adds a new "hardcore" difficulty or something, in which the kick is massively toned down and you die in two or three hits. The game was already fun, but it feels like a whole new and better game with those few improvements.

Most annoying ai companion ever.
She's dumb as bricks and as such pretty much runs into arrows all the time.

Yes this game is Skyway Approved™. Which I do have to say, most of his approved games have been very enjoyable. I have not been disappointed yet.
