The remastered music is really good! Gives me goosebumps.

e: Some thoughts though... I like how you can now quene units and issue command by left clicking. Another nice feature is that your harvesters aren't selected when you click and drag, only the combat units. As someone mentioned the AI doesn't appear to have unlimited funds anymore.

However I miss some of the nice conveniences of OpenRa like being able to set rally points for unit producing structures. I would really like to see some enhanced gameplay features like unit veterancy and other stuff I have got used to playing OpenRa.
Yes I noticed this thing with the Harvester not being selected if there are other units to select as well.

I remember the AI running out of cash in the original version as well. The AI has high reserves, and GDI at least punishes or tries to punish this strategy with A-10.

I did not remember the game being so fast so I guess I got older.

There was one of the NOD no-base mission I never beat as a kid (I had to use an alternative path) so time to try to beat it now without the cool features of the remaster.

Just fooling around medium difficulty in campaign, I noticed AI trying to guard harvesters and other priority targets more aggressively. Also they become like Michael Shumacher when squishing infantry with heavy vehicles, and I can even sense this behavior switch on.
One thing I appreciate is that the last units remaining do go on a suicide run along with selling all buildings to minimize looking for them.

I think they added double click to select same type of units, and new GUI elements are all welcome, and I bound the panning keys to WSAD and works ok.
I guess they did the best they could to res up the video but it really shouldn't be considered a 'feature' worthy of being listed along with others...unless they put it through some deepfake like machine learning filter, I don't think they could improve them a whole lot.

The music is by far one of the best things about the game. It is simply great imo.

There were some comments about the grenadiers being pain the ass, light vehicles like buggies seem pretty good at fending them off.
Wish they could do something about Dune 2000 also, too bad about the Herbert estate not giving green light.

I always go into this kind of thing just assuming it'll be good because I loved it so much when I was a kid. But the "overwhelming positive" reviews on Steam must be very nostalgia-driven IMO.

I'll admit I'm not a major RTS buff, but play something like the first Company of Heroes and then the remastered C&C side by side. I think it would have been better to leave this game in the past... and I didn't expect to be thinking that when I waded in.
In Company of Heroes you control 6-8 squads max and fight over control points whereas C&C has no population cap and lets you mass tanks and troops out the ass. I hardly see how this comparison makes any sense.

CoH plays like a Clausewitz compared to C&C which plays like a Red Army suicide rush. kangaxx makes an important point. Quality is a moving target and some 20+ year old classics can feel very primitive today. Only a very few true classics can stand the test of time, but I find those mostly outside the RTS genre.

It's a remaster, not a remake... the original game itself was top notch classic genre defining good, and it still is, it's just got updated 4k amazing visuals, audio, interface and online play for 2020. What's not to like?

Obviously nostalgia is at play here, but the game if released for the first time today, would still be amazing, just as it was back in 1995.

This remaster is very very good compared to the slew of really shit ones lately (Warcraft 3: Reforged, coof coof).

It really shows how much a remaster of love and respect this job was. I hate EA just as much as the next guy, but I applaud them for actually greenlighting this project, and hiring some competent people not to fuck it up, like Blizz and others did.

Lemonsky does amazing work tbh. Starcraft 1 remaster was also very gud.

I heard of Westwood Studios from a friend and applied. Unfortunately, my application letter fell behind a desk at Westwood. I was about to enter the aerospace industry (which has a significant presence in Las Vegas due to proximity to Area 51 and the Nevada Nuclear Test Site), when I finally heard back from Westwood. They discovered my application after moving a desk and immediately offered me a job. Of course I accepted. The only thing cooler than rocket science is game development.

The new graphics really remind me of Sun Age, which is good because Sun Age had great 2d graphics.
Some remastered tracks are hit or miss, but who cares, since you can just disable them, for that price its really filled with goodies. I'm really optimistic about steam workshop, we can finally get some great fanpatches that will add something to the game, instead of just hoping that nyerguds will crack the source code.

From the top of my head - TibDawn really needs command queueing, so nod light tanks can be as awesome as allied ones.

Edit: Also, man unit queue is really a gamechanger, there were so many units I've never used that are really effective when massed. For example, I've never bothered with buggies, but they are only 300 each and 5 of them pretty much shut down any infantry from the game. Flamethrowers were always so low on the sidebar that you never had time to build them because you were busy spamming tanks and minigunners.

TL;DR I've been playing this my whole life wrong

The entire game had a more sluggish feel to it that could be hard to return to after playing Red Alert. Especially the harvesters. Less resources too - that tiberium could run out fast.

I realize now that it was the only factor forcing you to try to play more tactically, as opposed to just turtling up and building up a huge undefeatable tank army in every mission.

Ah, you had the era of TWENTY Tibdawn clones every week. It's called the mid to late 90ies.

Daily reminder that CoH is the next step of the evolution chain that started with your beloved DoW1. If we want to talk about shitty RTS with CoH gameplay, you have CoH2 for the lulz and DoW2 for MP inanities (EVERYONE HAS A CLEAN BATTLEFIELD ABILITY AND RETREAT ABUSE).

RA/TB gameplay is perfectly fine, it merely needs to be properly refined. Endless clones on a saturated market killed the genre of C&C RTS almsot before Starcraft gave it the kiss of death. I'd honestly admit that I prefer the simplicity of C&C gameplay compared to CoH's gameplay (OpenRA is the only MP game I still fire sometimes) but CoH1 as a "shit" game compared to C&C clones? I want what you are smoking. And let's not forget that the basic RA/TibDawn campaign is flat-out archaic in design.

And let's not talk about the good number of perfectly fine TB games that killed themselves trying to become C&C clones for nothing.


How's the MP in the Remasters? Basic RA/Tibdawn MP is a sort-of-unbalanced mess, I'm curious if it was addressed in any way.

I'd legit play a proper TA remaster. MP needs to much fixing from baseline it's not even funny.

- after loading a save sometimes the production queues do not function despite being set ton "on"
- sometimes infantry units loaded up to a transport don't want to exit
- once after loading a save the screen started in black despite there not being a single entirely black spot on left on the map

Still, nothing outright terrible.

Yah, the first issue is frustrating, did not have the other.
On the other hand, there is a minor issue with the minelayer. If you click on somewhere to go and leave the pointer, the pointer won’t convert in “drop mine” when the vehicle arrive you need to move the pointer out and in again. Maybe the same issue you had with infantry ?
