I don't understand how you are wrapping the game so quickly. I expect I'll be at some 130 before I end it.
Are you the type of Gothic player who re-clears the map with every new chapter?
New chapter means going over every inch of land and talking to everyone.
Eh, I just revisit important locations/NPCs. And I certainly don't kill every new spawned creature and collect all regrown herbs.

I had a path in my mind on how to traverse the entire map most efficiently so as to visit every square inch of it with every new chapter :-D Can't let those walking bags of XP strut around unlooted, after all. Think of all the coins one can make from their skins and claws!

Really though, this only works thanks to Gothic maps being comparatively small, or I couldn't be arsed to either. Still, I really liked the ways some areas changed as you progressed, or how you slowly met more and more orcs in the wilderness with each chapter. Touring the map was worth it for that alone.

Quickly? I felt like I was not making any progress at all for a long time. I checked the stats again and GOG reports 78h 48m. My most recent save game says 65h 3m played and my character is level 47. I didn't rush the game and while I'm sure that I didn't discover/do all side quests, I think I got at least 75% of them. 130 hours seems very high to me. Do you do a lot of exploring?
Yeah for me steam reports 103 hours, save reports 80, and I am still in chapter 4 in Wolf Den doing quests there. Level 39. I don't get how you can have the game finished at 65 hours while doing all quests. Seems impossible to me unless you sprintjump everywhere all the time and skip all dialogue or something

But eh, who cares really, I don't want it to end

58. I've heard that 60 is possible but no idea how to do that.
Probably involves beating up lot's and lot's of citizens, hobos, and refugees.

You can get away with lot's of fights without fines by either dragging citizens away into an ally (and beating them up), or the authorities just don't give a shit. For the ones the authorities do care about, like I said just drag them away with a long range ice bolt or something. Other people won't follow and there will be no witnesses for the beating up part. For instance, you can sit in the corner of the boat construction house at the docks and use an ice bolt to get each of the boat workers to run over to you one at a time. Beat them up, let them get up and walk away. No fines.

Did you know that the line of refugees outside the citizen authority office are free targets to beat up? And that the line is a fresh batch of all new npcs every chapter? The exception is the ones inside the office. They'll set off fines for some odd reason.

Did you know that the authorities don't care if you beat up the refugees at the dock that the guards are feeding?

Did you know that the authorities just don't give a shit if you beat up the homeless?

Great way to get more apples and raspberries for stats too.

:smug:

True, I did not fight a single "neutral" NPC. I forgot about this possibility :D.
You're denying yourself part of the true Gothic experience :obviously:

I've been finding ways to beat up civilians (loosely using this term considering where Gothic 1 takes place) without getting into trouble since the first Gothic.

I mean, in Gothic 2 the docks were a GREAT place to get some early money and exp as the civies down there were MUCH less dangerous than the surrounding fauna :P

Actually, I cleared docks in my last G2 playthrough. In CoM I got into troubles here and there (in the first village - I tried to get past the barn with a stupid guard and he attacked me and then whole country decided to join) and decided it's not worth a fuss.

Well, rest assured, there are plenty of ways to get around the law in CoM.

They should've cut some content, especially chapters three and five had bad pacing. It also feels like they stuck too close to Gothic by copying the trap-filled dungeon at the end of the game which has never been fun.
For me it was Chapter 4, that had a bad pacing and could have been cut. You're reaching the point when the story should get a nice tempo and you should start feeling some power/respect as a character and instead you're getting the quests like:
"I don't know if I can let you into our wolf mine. Go kill some minecrawlers in front of our fort to get my trust"
Or some copies of Chapter 2 quests from Gothic 1
"I am afraid of opening the mine gate, go get me some guards for support" or simply clearing a mine from minecrawlers again.

Also I wasn't touched that much by Wolf Sons and their location.

Have you guys played it as a mage? Is it fun or does it feel kinda out of place, since you can't join a mage guild?

Yeah, Chapter 4 wasn't great in terms of pacing (or quests) either. I just liked the subplot where you search for the assassin more than the dicking around with the scoundrels in chapter three (especially given what a cunt Cortez is) and the rather contrived dungeon expedition in Chapter 5. Anyway, the bottom line is that something needed to be cut.

and the rather contrived dungeon expedition in Chapter 5

Yeah, that expedition was a really cliche "Gather the boys and go for suicide mission" episode and felt kinda out of nowhere. Although I appreciate that the devs tried to make it more mechanically diverse with puzzles and using NPCs for different reasons than the Irdorath dungeon in G2.

It is not an alignment as in G2, but rather a type of build. I didn't find it out of place though. You're more like a member of different guild, who just happen to use magic. It was ok for me, but it depends what you're looking for.
I liked the mechanic of learning the magic circles from books, because looking for them kept me engaged in exploration. I liked the staffs having the mana requirement rather than strength. And scroll scribing was an ok way to deal with stronger enemies until you get better spells. Mage build also seems to be more difficult than the melee one.

Codex Year of the Donut
saw little reason to prefer magic over crossbow
I did a magic/crossbow build btw, but most of the game I had no mana regen and I kept running out of shit to drink and alcohol is expensive

I am not. I see no reason to grind for exp/money in Gothic games - aside from autism. I am usually more than strong/rich enough by the late-midgame without doing so.
