I just wanted to note that the Bloodborne comics are very, very good. The artist has clearly played the game and knows what he's doing, while the plots do not go overboard. They are released via miniseries, four issues each. 'Healing Thirst', that is, #5-#8, is particularly good.

I'll be honest -- I pirated it, but it was so good I bought the print version. I actually preorder the new series and at this point I'm waiting for the last issue to arrive at the comic book store, for the first time in, I don't know, 30 years?...
Where did you order it?
https://www.atomcomics.pl/ ; they're reliable and I'm in the same city so it's convenient for me. Visiting the store is an experience I wish I could've had as a kid :)

Well my modded Bloodborne playthrough has ended. I was going to go through all the Chalice Dungeons, but one of the chalice drops bugged out and I couldn't go online and use a glyph dungeon to bypass it. Oh well, I had a much easier time with the Orphan and Gerham was a pushover, likely due to being over leveled.

Now it's on to modding my old Xbox 360 so I can play Armored Core 4 Answer again.

So, after a pretty enjoyable return running through Dark Souls 1, I'm giving Bloodborne another go for the 3rd time and have to ask, why is it so boring at the start?

It's never held my interest enough to push very deep into it before, whereas this time I'm gonna try and plough it at least the half-way point in the hope it gets better. But the early game is dull as fuck, and I can't put my finger on why. Undead Berg in DS1 felt so more exciting and interesting.

Level design tends to be less interesting than the earlier parts of Dark Souls.

it is many things, but boring ?

say, Gascoigne is boring?

Seriously, all 3 attempts to play Bloodborne have just bored me so far. Look at Dark Souls 1, you can venture off to many different areas right from the outset, and each encounter feels like an event. Whereas Bloodborne really restricts you, and there are a ton of easy-to-dispatch humanoid spods sat there just waiting to be killed.

Take away the aesthetic, and Bloodborne's early game feels way lamer than DS1s to me.

Almost everything in the existence is worse than first Dark Souls, unfortunately. DS broke gaming for me, in a way. But Bloodborne is still worth going through of course.

You don't need to sell me on DS1's beginning: it's the game of all time for me, and its beginning is a masterpiece of design. No FROM title comes close.
That said, Bloodborne, before the first mandatory boss (Gascoigne) , offers you:
-- the crow NPC;
-- the guy behind the window (Gilbert);
-- the girls encounter(s), which might lead to an awesome item making the Gascoigne fight even better;
-- a totally optional awesome boss-weirdo (Cleric Beast);
-- a semi-secret area with a nice set of clothes iirc;
-- a few ways to go around, actually
... and the Gascoigne fight is a lot better than the Taurus Demon, the Gargoyles, Pinwheel, or even Quelaag, all of which can be your first bosses in DS1. [Which, I agree, is simply awesome]

...so perhaps it's not totally underwhelming?...

I just finished Bloodborne with a level 93 character, Str 50/Skl 25/End 20/Vit 32 with a +10 Kirkhammer. Here are some thoughts:

+ I do appreciate that FromSoftware decided to change the background setting with something akin to 19th century urban England or France with gaslit streets. This is a perfect setting for horror. One that was a bit squandered, but I’ll get to that.

+ Kirkhammer. This is my favorite weapon from any of the Souls games. A weapon that can be quickly changed from a big hammer to a quick silver sword. I thought the Hunter’s Axe was going to be my weapon of choice due to the hammer’s slow speed, but I ‘got good’ with the weapon’s timing and it absolutely pancaked larger enemies. The reach also let me slam limbs of several bosses and stun them. For fast, but weak enemies such as hounds, the kirkhammer’s silver sword mode was perfect. I prefer strength builds and this worked well for me.

+ The landscapes are beautiful, especially with the full moon overlooking the city.

+ This is a FromSoftware Souls game, so it’s good and a recommend. They haven’t made a bad one yet, just lesser in comparison to some of the others.

- This is my least favorite of the Souls games, though. Again, it’s good, but I felt glad to be done with it. My first major criticism is with the limited amount of weapons and that a clothing wardrobe replaced the armor sets. I prefer the huge amount of options in the Souls games.

- I hated the stupid amounts of blood covering my characters in Dragon’s Age, especially when they are having casual conversations about their backstory while caked in blood. Bloodborne is a much better game, but I’m not giving it a pass on doing the same. Please don’t copy Bioware. You’re better than this. Find a horse trough of water and clean yourself up.

- The blood and Cthulhu body horror is supposed to be scary, but it’s hard to be scared when they are used for jump scares that are quickly silenced by my Kirkhammer. Less is often more. The most unsettling moment of the game to me was in the quieter lecture building where you find gelatinous humanoids in student uniforms reliving a parody of their previous existence. That’s the moment of horror that stuck with me.

- The bosses might have been the easiest in the series. I never summoned a player for help and I defeated a handful of the bosses on my first try. The hardest boss took me about six times. I had the most trouble with the Bloody Crow of Cainhurst, and he wasn’t even a boss. He finally went down from a combo of poison and well-timed Kirkhammer slams.

Here’s my ranking of Souls like games I’ve beaten in the order of which ones I’d be willing to replay: Dark Souls 2, Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Nioh, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne. I don’t see myself playing Sekiro since I prefer the weapon and armor variance in Nioh and the Souls games. Plus, I prefer dodging and rolling to Sekiro’s lauded parrying mechanic. I did just purchase Elden Ring, which is the first time in a long time that I purchased a AAA game within a year of it being published. Now I can be part of the popular zeitgeist and am thinking of starting as a Wretch for the hell of it. However, I have some reservations about what I heard about the new jumping and platforming, and also on the supposed length of the game. Previous Souls games were perfect in length since they usually ended around the time that I began to feel worn out on the gameplay. But as a backup plan, I also just got Nioh 2, which I’m really excited to get into.

I am curious, did you play the DLC? I found it fixed almost all of my problems with the game. The bosses are some of my favorite in any From game and the weapons it introduced are awesome. I didnt mind the limited armor as I usually just choose fashion over function anyway.

Also Nioh 2 is fantastic. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I call for a hunt against this beast!

Admittedly bloodborne is the most fashionsoulsy of all the games. As for weapons, the dlc basically doubles the amount, but each weapon in bloodborne is also 2 normal souls weapons, because the trick mode has a completely different moveset (kirkhammer is a greathammer and a longsword at the same time and so on), so the selection is larger than it first appears.

I'm honestly not sure it is supposed to be scary, as opposed to just an interesting and mildly unsettling setting.

It is by far my favorite setting of the souls games.

I recommend the DLC if you want harder bosses. Both Ludwig and Orphan are tough, the toughest souls bosses I've beaten.

I think the game in general is easier than the rest, you can kinda beat most regular enemies by just spamming attack and letting the hp recovery on attack carry you.

You're not the first to offer this criticism and I still don't get it. BB has a great weapon selection, possibly the best in the series since each one of them is basically 2 weapons in one. The other games might have 20 different swords but the difference between them is that one has a thrusting r2, another has a diagonal slash that goes left to right instead of right to left and another is 1.7mm shorter than the others.

Point. This is dumb and should not have existed.

Pretty much why this is the last game in the series that respects the idea behing Demons's Souls with the challenge rather being getting to the bosses instead of the actual boss fights themselves. But as has been already mentioned, go play the DLC. It's probably the best one From put out for any of the games.

Also, what ending did you get?

There's very little platforming. As for the length, the player has some control over that due to so much stuff being optional.

D_X and Elttharion, I didn't go for the DLC and I went for the ending where you are killed and wake up from the hunt. The reason for both of these is that I felt tapped out of the game by then.

JDR13 , nice to know about Elden Ring, thanks. I just started my Wretch character and easily killed my first boss. Either these games are getting easier, or I'm getting too experienced.

Which boss, Tree Sentinel?

Because that's not a boss. The real boss of the first area is Godrick the Grafted (maybe that butthurt margaret guy before that). The Tree Sentinel is just a boss-like mook. He has some variations later on and at some point you even get to fight two of them. He is like the Taurus Demon from Dark Souls 1.

Yes, get ready for the "real" content in Elden Ring to be hiding behind a metric ton of open world filler.

Probably referring to a boss battle in a dungeon, of which there are a few quite close to the point where the player-character first emerges into the overworld in Limgrave.

I'm sure it helps if you've already played multiple FromSoft games. Elden Ring is my first unless you go all the way back to the king's Field series which is a very different experience. The first few hours of ER were a rude awakening for me.

I did play a few hours of DS1 when it was released on Steam, but it didn't really grab me for whatever reason.

By taking the wake up ending you missed out on the best boss fight in the base game. Also, I repeat the recommendation to go try out the dlc. Give it a break for a while if you feel burned out, but really give it a try at some point. It adds several very interesting weapons, ramps up the difficulty by quite a lot and has some great boss fights (and some non-boss fights that might as well have had their own boss health bar).

Lady Maria is not particularly hard, but she is my favorite boss fight in the entire series, by a pretty wide margin.

Same here. I find her to be a good, well adjusted challenge. No health bar for days, no cheating such as not being possible to parry her, pretty much very little bullshit. Only thing I don't really like is the effects on her attacks in the 3rd phase, but it's just a minor thing since you can still see what's going on quite well and she's pretty much dead by that point anyway.

Now, of course we all know the real bosses of the dlc are
Axethulhu and the shark bros :)
