As an epic scale tabletop player back in the '90s, I can say that Final Liberation is the closest 40k vidya game to the tabletop experience. The game is older than dirt though.
I really enjoyed Battlefleet Gothic 2 despite not liking the first game. BFG 2 drew a lot of hate for the grindy campaign, but the QoL was better than than BFG 1. You can actually pause and issue orders in Battlefleet Gothic 2, which is essential in large fleets. Skalgrim mod is worth checking out.
intereesting, good to know..I raged quit and refunded Battlefleet Gothic 1 because I could not pause to give orders and then never looked at the 2nd one because of that, but now I might give it a try
Yeah, I tried to play through the campaign of BFG 1 three times and gave up in frustration. The lack of pause orders forced me into really boring and conservative tactics. For example, using light cruiser wolfpack tactics was out of the question because the micromanagement was too intensive.
BFG 2 has granular campaign settings:
Don't like shitty escort missions? Turn them off. Want 200% fleet sizes? No problem. It's better on every level than BFG 1 other than the story. BFG 1 was much better at presenting the 40k universe. In contrast, BFG 2 has Inquisitor Dickhammer who's a Saturday morning kids cartoon villan.
