Not only can you eat kittens, you *should* eat them, otherwise the little kittens will breed like crazy and your dwarfs will have to wade through swarms of cats bogging down movement everywhere. Seriously.
I already marked a few for slaughter.

By the way, what tileset does the guy on video use?

I don't mind DOS era graphics, nor text-based aventures, but ASCII? You gotta be shitting me.

You trash ascii based games, and then clearly let on you've never heard of DWARF FORTRESS, and you're asking for others to be banned? Fuck off you hairy monkey.

I'm sorry for enjoying a certain degree of graphical representation in my games, instead of efficiently spending my free time investigating if a walking 'D' on my screen is a harmless dog or a fucking dragon .

Fuck you.

You ar edumb. (c)
Of course dragon would be capial D, while dog - just d.
Also, dogs don't usually breathe fire.

Yeah, and memorize the rest of the ASCII table, so I can tell if a • is a stone, a lake, a cave, or just XXrotting dwarven shitXX. If I want an abstract mental challenge I happily play chess, not some glorified piece of code. Make your retorts where they're valid.

Breathe fire or breathe little red f's? How can I tell when it's not aggressive and a few tiles away? Please, don't make me laugh. ASCII 'graphics' are so backwards that the only appeal they grow is out of some basement nerd full of unjustified self-importance.

A'ight 1eyedking. You're either tryng to troll (in this case, try harder), or you simply do not grok ASCII. In this case best just carry on with your life. It's not like we all should dig the same things. World would be an awfully better place if it were so.

You have a problem with it? Try to like it. I admit, DF is not the best game to develop a liking towards ASCII (try a simpler rougelike perhaps, ADOM maybe). Failing that, just admit before yourself, that ASCII is not what you like. Without the butthurt faggotry.

BTW: a small hint - most ASCII based games have a basic command that lets you look around using the cursor and arrow keys. This way, you're told what the bloody fuck does the big green Ą mean.

...or just use a tileset, as was suggested in every thread that contained complaints about DF graphics ever, at which point you will arrive at something like this (though not necessarily, there are many tilesets to choose from):

DFG13.png

Besides, DF's ASCII is the most "graphical" ASCII I've ever seen - that retarded "breathe little red f's" comment from 1eyedking and all that followed make me sure he's just a troll who either didn't even try to play the game or deliberately misleads people. People, don't be taken in by a random innurnet retard - this game is definitely worth your time. If you can't stomach ASCII just use a tileset.

Something I noticed, and was really disappointed about, was that you can't encrust metalcrafting/armor/weapons items with gems. Nooooooooo! Just imagine: High-quality steel plate mail, masterfully studded with gold, and silver, and encrusted with masterfully cut amethyst. Orgasm.

? I had no trouble making a set of gold studded steel armor for my sheriff. I just had to do some micromanagement to put them onto a stockpile close to the forge (so they are the closest items to the forge). Then create 'stud whatever' jobs. Though I haven´t tried it yet, it should also work with gemsetting.

edit: Oops, misread your post. Yeah, I guess the problem is the menu 'encrust furniture/goods/whatever'.

Well, that's basically what I'm against: games should have a minimum degree of graphical representation so that players do not have to waste their time to scroll around with an X to find out what a floating E means. Why should I when in a tile-based game that could perfectly have been a bitmap? Fuck, I mean, it's not like I'm asking for bloom, dynamic lighting, or bump-mapping; hell, not even 3D vectors.

Now this - this is at least barely playable. Why the programmer doesn't come up with a simple bitmap GUI and graphics engine is beyond me - it's basic, bare-bones videogame design, and it's not like it's a menial job: Carmack was able to display his brilliance and skill in programming through it, but then again this game's designer has a Master's degree on Math so probably his head is so far up his ass he gets to eat his food twice.

1eyedking, you probably lack of imagination.

anyway, Dwarf Fortress is freakin awesome and there is Linux version so I will give it try. CptDuck tutorials are pretty good and helpful.

Btw. how good & playable is adventure mode?

Combat is good. Not much to do besides go around and kill stuff. Quests thus far are just "go there and kill that" and there are no real rewards. Really slow movement in settlements due to NPC path-finding or some such. You can join a religion, but it's pretty meaningless right now besides an extra entry in Legends. You can recruit some people to follow you assuming you're strong enough compared to them and they're willing to go adventuring.

That's why when everyone plays tic-tac-toe they imagine fearsome armies advancing and conquering fields waving flags made up of either circles or crosses.

Give me a fucking break. That game is obviously for elitist faggots whose only way to pass as intelligent persons is to brandish they're unequivocally imaginative and ingenious because they interpret an error screen as some sort of dungeon simulator.

There is not much "interpretation" going on when playing roguelikes or DF. It's actually pretty easy and intuitive. The fact that you're talking about memorizing lists of characters as some kind of prerequisite shows that you've never played a roguelike longer than 30 minutes.

Calling people elitist faggots and other nonsense because the games they play are in ASCII is truly retarded. Did you stumble upon this board on your way to the Bethesda forums?

I have to admit, I see where 1eyedking's coming from. I want to like this game, I want to like it very much. I'm a Lord of the Rings fan, I I like strategy/resource games, I enjoyed Sim City, I enjoyed Stronghold, I enjoyed Settlers 2, I watched the first five videoes of cptduck's tutorial, I read through a couple of starting guides on the DFwiki, but the setup is just so clunky; I've tried to start a game three times, and each time I've ended up accidentally not taking items that I thought I was bringing, or somehow sending my dwarves to the top of a frozen mountain when I thought they were heading to the foot (and not even being sure if it was the same mountain). And even then, with the wiki on hand, I couldn't make much headway of figuring out where I went wrong.

I'll see if the new tileset helps me any.

I've already expressed my opinion, and you're now repeating what others said. I haven't played any roguelikes for more than an hour for the simple fact that I already had my share of fun with Sokoban 30 fucking years ago, and am stating that roguelikes are games lost in time where a group of pricks have taken upon themselves to glorify them while blatantly ignoring the progress of gaming for the past 30 years, minus these last 10 which were utter shit.

An obvious hyperbole, what I meant to say was that those who criticize others for not swallowing a game devoid of aesthetics and frozen in time with regards to input optimization are the ones who are elitist.

PS: Smarts, I liked your 'when it's user-friendly' version of the post more.

So very true. Might as well close your eyes and create fantasy land dungeon crawler in your mind if you're going to play some shit like this. It's 2009 last I checked, not 1982. Is it too difficult to paintshop some fucking sprites or something? You have to be the most bored hermit in the world to play a game like this.

I have always viewed DF and their ilk as part of the "hobbyist genre". To put it bluntly, yeah, "elitist faggots". Nothing wrong with these type of games, however. You either like it or you don't.

You people really need to ditch that strange preoccupation with graphics. This "it's not year X" "argument" is just too dumbfuckish to even read. In any case none of you (phantasmal, 1eyedking) have any interest in games like this, so to each his own, eh? It's not like DF is shoved down your throats by force.

And wtf does it mean that a game is in the "hobbyist genre"? And why is it "elitist"? This is just more of the same bullshit from people who think that something is "hard" when it doesn't have sprites.

It does have an elitist vibe to it, to someone looking in from the outside. Something akin to saying "Fuck you graphics whores. I can have just as much fun with lines and symbols than with polygons and sprites. I don't need your fancy graphics to make a kick ass game."
People obviously still like those sort of games despite being "retro" and so keep making new developments, but still taking care to keep the original look and feel of the games.

It's stupid to read people who hold to their backwards way when the adding of graphics and an intuitive user interface could only result in a benefit for the game.

True to the Codex mentality, I have no problem with someone liking a game, I have a problem when someone says that game is good. Did you know that this kind of games share a lot in similarity with Oblivion where you have to be imagining things that don't exist so as to 'enhance' the experience? It's OK to imagine what the Vault Dweller would really look like in a momentary lapse of musing, but when you have to imagine what the fuck a smiley face flying around the screen is, something is obviously wrong; as wrong as imagining Pac-Man as some sort of interstellar ghostbuster who must collect as many glowing stones of iridium as possible to keep his multi-leveled spaceship from running out of fuel.

Bitching around a good game like Dwarf Fortress (hate me now) because it uses ASCII instead of graphic is silly. Well gl&hf with your crusade.
