Dwarf Fortress is a good game, but it's not even close to an RPG. A strategy game, maybe.

Too bad the game runs horribly on my computer, or at least it did the last time I tried it (about a year ago). It's just ridiculously CPU intensive, and although the FPS doesn't seem important, the rate at which time passes in-game is completely dependent on your FPS, and my game was running at about 1/2 speed, which is unplayably annoying.

I don't have a problem with ASCII, in fact, I have logged hundreds of hours of play in Dungeon Crawl, nethack and doomRL. With that said, the controls for DF are completely anti-intuitive and shitty.

DF + a good custom tileset like Mayday's one = a game 10x times betta than Dungeon Keeper with THOUSANDS of c&c

The only thing it lacked is a truly convenient ui.

It really is a great game, though I play with a graphical tileset. Feels like a Dungeon Keeper/Settlers/Lemmings mix or something, just with alot more details and complexity.

Only takes a few hours to learn the basic keyboard shortcuts, and once that's done it gets alot easier to navigate the crappy UI.

Not only can you eat kittens, you *should* eat them, otherwise the little kittens will breed like crazy and your dwarfs will have to wade through swarms of cats bogging down movement everywhere. Seriously.

From what I recall from looking through the plans for the game, and general chatter, I reckon improved UI and technical issues to do with scrolling and such may well come to be better situated in 2009. There's still much they plan on improving and adding within the game and then the community stuff that will surely manifest.

At the rate they are going though, it would be hilarious and scarily possible for the world of Dwarf Fortress to actually contain, perhaps, some other Roguelikes or elaborate homages thereof.

Great work on these video tutorials! I think (graphical) Roguelikes would get much more attention from the curious if there were more attention given to gameplay vids, trailers, etc. I really should start working on this myself moreso, especially since the capture and streaming sites are to a point where text is readable and all now.

Something I noticed, and was really disappointed about, was that you can't encrust metalcrafting/armor/weapons items with gems. Nooooooooo! Just imagine: High-quality steel plate mail, masterfully studded with gold, and silver, and encrusted with masterfully cut amethyst. Orgasm.
