Wrong, actually a lot of people here are complaining about too much action per se

No. The complaint is too much focus on action at the expense of role-playing.

Had skills been expanded - eg if:

- an 'outdoorsman' skill were added which governed the compass markers,

- an 'armed-spell-casting' skill governing that new 'feature' were added,

-some of the old Daggerfall skills made a return,

- the to-hit roll had not been removed, and

- the weapon skills not been merged, then:

I guarantee you wouldn't be seeing the complaints about action.

Ture Twinfalls. Instead, the twitch kiddies would unwrap Oblivion in their Christmas Stocking, create a Short Blade using Thief, find the "1337 Sword of All Killing (Long Blade)" and rush to the forums:

"OMFG!!11!!1 WAHT TEh FUK IS (sry caps LOLROFL) wrong with Oblion??? Teh game sux! I finded the 1337 Sword of All Pwnzoring and I can't hit shiat with it!!!11!one!!11ADHD!!111"

Then they wouldn't buy TES5.

Damn, I am not looking forward to the TES Forums after Oblivion's release. So far, most of the illogical, immature, and illiterate posts have been confined to the Oblivion Forum. Once it's released, I suspect that the entire forums will be flooded with comments exactly like the one you just typed.

I just hope to weather the storm and wait until this fixation on graphics and action in RPGs passes. Hopefully, Fallout 3 will be made after the graphics and action pissing contests are over.

That is actually one of the things I like. Well, I think I will like since I have not yet experienced it myself. But I do find that since we moved on from textbased/spritebased RPGs to 3D graphical ones that it becomes hard to insist on the fact that you either didn't hit an enemy when everyone can see that you did, or that you did it even though you swung your sword through thin air.

I think the compromise of hitting WYSIWYG while focussing the to-hit and damage stats both on the amount of damage done is a good one, even though the true ROLE playing is reduced a bit. Well, you could always swing wide on purpose, to stay true to the roleplaying :)

I guess people who are not so good with a keyboard/mouse/controller will suffer most because they will have a harder time considering the game will be balanced towards the 'average' person who is reasonably dexterous I would imagine. Presumably that may be compensated by a general 'difficulty' slider of some sort...

The problem is animations, since they could not make dodge animations to show the player missing they simply remove the ability to miss.

You sould not like the idea the ability to hit something depends only on your ability to aim the mouse on the screen and press a button, that simply going to lead to FPS gameplay and remove the roleplaying element the character IS the fighter, not the player.

Solution: go back to text and sprites!

I concur. Why DIDN'T they just make dodge animations for the AI instead then?

Hmm, could the AI be made to block instead of dodge, that would be an OK substitute..

You realize, though, that the same rule applied to Morrowind? That is, in MW you had a 0% chance of hitting unless you actually clicked on the enemy. And they would shuffle around too. This does not make the game any harder.

Han Solo dodges Greedo's shot, A New Hope DVD.

And the AI can and does block. They're also more likely to move if the opponent is attacking. "Simply" playing a dodge animation won't always work. But I've covered all this before and am not going to repeat it.

And if they did decide to strictly use dodge animations for when the the player gets a bad roll, wouldn't it look bad if the player kept thrusting with a dagger? The enemy's dodge animation would keep on resetting, causing them to 'jerk' into the beginning frame of the next dodge move. Hopefully my explanation is understandable, it's hard to describe.

How can someone even be confused about this matter? It's obviously a problem with realtime combat, not 3D graphics.

No because you never build a animation that takes longer that a attack animation, it only looks bad if the dagger had such a high attack speed that the dodge animation would never fully play before the player could attack again.

Hey, you know what? Absolute most of dodges do NOT involve standing in place, but actually moving somewhere. (backward, forward, to the sides).
And "problem with realtime combat"?
It's not a problem with realtime - it's a TB allowing you things cannot possibly do in RL.
You guys should watch less Matrix for the night, but watch some videos from TheArma.

Now i´ve read this thread, the nine pages straight... this post must be the record guiness of blaming in a post of a forum...its funny otherwise; the people of Bethesda forums invading the Codex..., a impossible combat; a bunch of guys moving in RT light RPG with only a few stats against other people moving in Turn based mode with a wide choice of abilities and options... mmmm i think that i´ll make a mod for Oblivion...

yes, yes, i know, i´m crazy...

PD: and to fan the flames; i think that there are too much people posting here that simply doesn´t understand that they don´t like RPG games...

Actually, all this talk of Oblivion of late is making me want to re-install Morrowind and fire it up for a bit. I'll probably check out more of the mods this time too.

I was given ritalin in grade school. I didn't vote for Bush though, because I live in a heavily blue state, so I was comfortable throwing my vote away.

As for the intelligence of bush v. kerry voters, you might be referring to this hoax.

I've had it installed for years now. I played it quite far the first time but didn't finish it. I got uber-powerful too soon and decided to restart.

Second time around I decided to enjoy the story more (i.e. pay attention to it ;) ) and I still haven't finished it :)

I doubt I will finish it before Oblivion is released as I want to see and do everything. Must've spent way more than 100 hours on the game so far though.

In fact, I think I'll go play another round today

Holy shit, I have never seen such a large gathering of bickering, bitchy little fanboys in my life. Seriously, almost everyone on this forum seems to be a complete fucking tool. All anyone does is spend all YEAR bitching about a fucking game. If diablo is better, then why don't you go to their goddamn forums.

I find it absolutely unreal that any developer would respond on this forum. And yet no matter what kind sarcastic masterbating you twats take the time to pull the fucking binky out of your mouth to spew, the guys at Bethesda STILL respond. I'm sure even they don't know why they do it.
Maybe it's because they like games, and they like what they do.
Something most of you wouldn't have a goddamn clue about.

If Oblivion is already so horrible- before it's release, no less, then why do you waste your precious time moaning like whores about it?
Oh, ok, I'll answer that one...

Because you're FUCKING FANBOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have no sense of irony, do you? You sit at your computers half the fucking year, coming to this same damn forum, bitching about this same shit, and YOU have the nerve to call others fanboys?
Who the fuck are you trying to kid?!
Now, I'm not saying you should change hobbies, if this is what you're best at, you're not gonna find another hobby, it doesn't get any lower than this. But for Chrissakes, be creative.

o.k.?
Alrighty then, go fuck your mother.

Awwww, poor little TES forum tard, upset cos the devs talk to us more than you? Annoyed because we learn more details about your only reason to exist, before you do?

There there. Here - have some ritalin.
