Can't kill Al Sazir with Sword/Dodge merc who decided to be a thief. Also, can't do shit in the thief questline :)
A lot of tough fights in the game can be solved by coming back later once you've gotten more XP. With my sword/cs/dodge character I was able to beat everyone in the arena except Al Sazir right after getting to Maadoran. But I couldn't beat him, so (after several reloads) I went and did a bunch of other quests to get XP, then came back and killed him without reloading at all.

Hey Vince, are you going to consider a bit of beefing up for Awesome guy? His skills don't seem vastly superior to a character made from scratch.

Hang it then, I'm forgetting something, but he was what- 4 swords, 3 block, 2 CS? That block is a bit on the low side, innit?

Thanks Vince. I suspected something of the sort.

Found a couple of other bugs where the Demon wouldn't move if you kept firing at him from a distance, and never came within 3 squares of him. Free kill. I look forward to coming back with a melee character, though, because when that thing did catch me it would slice me open in basically 2 hits.

Edit: Well, that is one complicated CYOA.
  • You need 4 Disguise to get inside, or a [streetwise][charisma] check.
  • You need 7 CS to kill the Legatus, or 6 Steal + at least 3 (or 2?) Streetwise to get the option, or some kind of [streetwise] + [streetwise][persuasion] check.
  • If you don't kill the Legatus, then you need either 7 Sneak (more than 6, at least) to sneak past the guardsroom, or Disguise higher than 4, or again a pretty high [critical strike][dexterity] check that a 4 CS / 10 DEX could not fulfill.
I'm starting to wonder about how these longer complicated ones are meant to work. I love them and they are really satisfying narratively, but the only way to 'play' them is to hoard your SP and then reload until you figure out what you need, because in this case at least all the failstates are instant death, not combat. And apparently 105 spare SP isn't enough for a winning combo. Sure, there's an option to give up and return to Levir, which I'll check out now to see how that works, and there's an option to switch sides to House Aurelian.

I think it'd be fine if there's a way to mess shit up and reach suboptimal states, or if returning to Levir still has interesting consequences (which I'll check tonight).

Hey Vince, are you going to consider a bit of beefing up for Awesome guy? His skills don't seem vastly superior to a character made from scratch.

He was too awesome for our game and we removed him. But we added a nice combat "tutorial" instead, with some fights to play around with.

“So, I hear you want to be a hero? It’s a tough gig these days, son, so you’d best adjust your expectations. Now, we’ve all heard tales of faraway lands where a hero can kill hundreds of men and all kind of beasts in the blink of an eye, but here if you go against three thugs and live to tell the tale, you should consider yourself lucky.

“Respect your enemy, son, and take each and every one seriously. They want to live same as you do and they will fight you tooth and nail for it. Still, every man has to fight for what’s his sometime, so let’s get to training.”

“Rule number one – if you can’t hit a man, you can’t kill him. Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people neglect their weapon training and rely on blind luck instead.

“Rule number two – if you can’t kill a man fast enough, you’re giving him an opportunity to do you in, especially if he brought friends to the fight. Different swords, for example, are good for different occasions. Two-handers can work miracles in some situations but by nothing but hindrance in others. Adapt or die.

“Rule number there – defense. Dodge and block are your first line of defense. Sadly, in the heat of the battle, you don’t have time to do both, so pick one and stick with it. Your armor is the second line of defense, but keep in mind that it can also slow you down. Pick one that’s right for you.

From the latest RPS preview...

Of course, Vault Dweller is his polite and well behaved self, can't account for taste on the avatar tho

Unlike you, of course, who is always polite and well-mannered, and who never speaks ill of others. You, sir, are an inspiration to us all.

Well, I thought I’d stop any rush to canonize you as an eccentric fan rather than a belligerent lurker, or an attempt to defend the bluntness behind comments such as:

“And no, I don’t really care who’d think what and how my comments would affect sales. I’m making this game on a bold assumption that there are some people out there who are interested in complex games that aren’t made for retards.”

“The graphics can blind 75% of your audience – we don’t want that, do we? – so don’t post any screens.”

as honesty rather than needless aggression.

I feel the latent sexual tension in the comments, Vince would not want to be alone with this bunch in a room.

So, RPS did a preview after all?
:incline:

I was hoping they'd cover the early access.

EDIT: Oh wait, not really a full-fledged preview, but still nice. I'm sure Adam's positive attitude will be somewhat diminished after dying over 9000 times, though. :P

Deadsanta, that you?
Also it should be fun to see RPS' reaction on how female models go topless, if at all they notice.

Oh, so social justice warriors of rps decided to join in on the fun? I wonder what do they have to say about PATRIARCHY in the AoD setting.

I think they should be extremely pleased on that account.

If they survive long enough to meet some female characters.

I find so weird this "preview of a preview" shit RPS keep doing... They did the same thing with Blackguards "Hey, game is out, I'll preview it soon!", and it has been almost 20 days since...

AOD seemed to get a mostly decent reception on those RPS comments, but I'll be interested to see how they find the difficulty. This guy for example:

Oooo, sounds delightful. I’m replaying Baldur’s Gate 2 in the guise of the “Enhanced Edition” at the moment and it’s fantastic, if balls-to-the-wall difficult.

Yeah, ive noticed that one immediately too.

I guess with the usual? The overblown rants of screaming at steam forums followed by posts that warn everyone its not BG at all and stats and skills actually matter and he cant progress beyond first two fights so nobody should buy this game - at least not before trying the demo...

What build, what gear, what level of skills? Al Sazir was damn iffy even with max dodge and 7 in the weapon of ultimate subtlety(hammers).
STR 10 DEX 10 CON 5 PER 7, 7 in both swords and dodge, 4 crit. Tried differerent weapons, like iron shamshir or handar -- with masterwork, hardened edge. Doesn't really matter.

Tired of explaining why Mr. Awesome isn't actually awesome and why one should not expect to win all fights with him. Like hitting a brick wall. "But... but... the intro slide says that he killed two men! How come I can't kill two men?"
