Erm... an addon that helps "immensely" is required for progress.
Default UI is reactionary, addons offer much more information to prepare for various events.

Not everyone uses them, but certain addons are basically mandatory for SOMEONE in the raid to have, a lot of groups just have those few people carry everyone else by being the leaders who disseminate orders/information.

Not having certain mods in modern raiding is basically crippling your team. Unless you're really good, but really good players just get the mods anyway and then use them as confirmation rather than as guideline. It's usually the complete dunces with bloated egos that make addons a big deal, and then deliver a shit performance and a bucketful of drama, either going the NO ADDONS AT ALL or MY ADDON KNOWLEDGE IS BESTEST routes.

And really, most of them are conveniences/quality of life/permitting you to act pre-emptively (or simply not get one-shot by something obvious). Sure, if you hate success, go ahead and shit on those, otherwise, it's kinda a no-brainer.

I mean, how the hell will threat meters, customizable warning addon (yes, you can remove any announcements you don't want to see), performance tracker and 1-2 class/role-specific addons ruin someone's authentic raiding experience? If you're not getting those, you're essentially dumping your personal tracking/awareness responsibilities on the team's/leader's head, and that's not cool.

It's been a while since I played (stopped after Ulduar in WotLK, never looked back). But I recall addons being mandatory for raids.
Our guild had a guild addon I co-wrote with 2 buds. It handled DKP and also came with built-in Grid for healers and an aggro meter so people couldn't complay they didn't have them. It also informed raid leaders if someone was running an outdated version of whatever the raid addon we used was called. One that warned you when the boss was about to do shit.

And even with that, we still had 'tards (DPS mostly) who stood in the fire.

5man heroics in TBS/WotLK were fun though. I enjoyed tanking for guildies.

I've been playing quite a few old dungeons and raids lately, mainly for the achievements and titles I must admit. I've done pretty much all dungeons up to Cataclysm and a good chunk of raids of up to WotLK. I really liked fighting my way through Karazhan and seeing the sights of Icecrown Citadel, though I ragequit the former at that fucking chess battle and its fucking Harry Potter bullshit and the second was extremely tedious as a Death Knight with only a fuckton of bandages to heal that dragon before the Sindragosa fight.

The Cata dungeons are all unfortunately extremely linear. Even the Halls of Origination where you have some choice have hallway after hallway. I thought at first it was going to be a bit like last time you trekked through a Titan dungeon alongside Brann Bronzebeard, but there was no fun lore stuff this time. The three dungeons in the Cavern of Time regarding the Dragon Soul were kinda fun, but I really hope that Blizzard will soon pick up on the fact that ESCORT MISSIONS ARE NOT FUN.

Incidentally, Wowhead says that Invincible drops from the Lich King but they don't say at what difficulty level. I've beaten him at 10man normal, but to get that 1% chance do you have to do 25 normal or heroic?

Heroic 25M as I recall, it's the equivelant of phoenix from Kael'thas.

Yep, this.

Also, did the pre-launch event. Wow, could it have been more simple? It's literally just "Yeah okay, let's ruin the Alliance/Horde outposts that were pretty cool, then give 12 new quests with some free blues and purples for your alts. Kbye, see you in expansion!"

Gotta see UBRS, maybe it's less disappoint, people say that at least you shouldn't pull the entire room at once.

For the chess event in Kara just move your peons the fuck out of the way and go head-to-head with the King, using your own King piece.
Uh, at least I think that's how people used to solo it.

I recently maxed a DK from scratch in 3 days. Not hard considering they start on 55, and the MoP exp ranges have been reduced by a lot. 85-90 takes an afternoon.
I find DKs to be one of the more interesting classes at the moment. They've got some pretty wonky rotations.
I'll be maining my elemental Shaman for Draenor however. Shamans are the coolest.
The DK will be more of a garrison alt. Not that I know anything about garrisons.

There's something hilarious in these discussions about addons for raiding.

Unless you raided in the world first guilds, addons existed in vanilla as well and functioned pretty much the same way they do now, giving timers and informing when bosses use abilities. Those are not a new thing. And Blizzard designs just as much around addons as back then. Most dispel bosses were made around the fact that people had Decursive for example.

DKs have funny rotations, yes. On old raid and dungeon bosses I start with two Death Strikes, throw an Outbreak (with glyph of course), throw a Plague Leech, Death Strike again, another Outbreak, two Blood Boils and spam Death Coil. When you get a free shot use cast Death and Decay, and when the enemy is below 35% use Soul Reaper.

Keep using Death Coil to speed up your rune regeneration and use Death Strike and Blood Boil whenever you can.

No, decursive broke the fuck out of those fights. They specifically made UI changes to get rid of it. And the figths are designed around what the default UI offers.

Playing 2H frost, brah.
Oblitirate is the shizzle. +50% damage when using 2-handers. I like those big hits.
My Shaman is great for rapid mid-range damage hits on single targets with the new mastery ability. My DK is for sating those big hit cravings.
Also, my DK is much better at pulling/tagging ranged mobs. This is pretty irritating. My shaman only has shocks with cooldown.

RE: addons.

I've prepared my addons for WoD.

AutoTurnIn - auto-completes and auto-picks up quests from NPCs.
Coordinates - shows coordinates on minimap and world map.
Hide Actionbar Gryphons - I user standard actionbars, but this removes that unnecessary clutter on the sides.
ReURL - I use standard chat, but this makes URLs copy-paste'able.
TinyDPS - Damage meter. Seems to be accurate, and very lightweight.

If I start raiding, I guess I should also install some kind of boss mod.

Yes, i fully support this notion! Ah, now i remember all these CT_Raid, CT_Assist things that were used in the olden days... X-Perl still supports it, so it seems. Anyways, saying that current raiding isn't possible without addons (or blaming your death on them) is something uncannily close to shifting blame from a person to the piece of software.

Anyways, now you cant create a 1-click macro that will do all the rotation for you (as all hunters i knew did in Vanilla/BC) and put it on mwheelscroll

You are very wrong. They changed it BECAUSE they didn't want to make encounters that relied on addons in such manner anymore, they even wrote a long post about it in the forums of the era.

In that they broke down dispel mechanics for bosses, how addons caused them to amp shit up with things like Chromaggus which was practically a dispel fight and why they decided to move away from such model and break function of those addons.

Chromaggus wasn't designed around having decursive. It was a player awareness fight, you noticed shit on you and used los to patiently wait for a dispel. It wasn't meant for oos healers to race the clock in dispelling tunnel vision dps.
And they had plenty more fights where mechanics designed to test player awareness/coordination degenerated into dumb addon usage. It doesn't mean their intention was for players to use those addons. In some extreme cases they even made sure those addons stop working.

As for blue posts, they were extremely careful to not mention something like that. I don't even remember them recognizing they design encounters around the existance of proper raidframes until they had a solution in place.
Would really like to see blue posts that admit they designed encounters assuming players use addons that automate gameplay.

I raided all of 10 man heroic in WotLK and Cata without addons. They were not nearly as mandatory as some of you are suggesting.

Alright, I've been trying to figure out how to solo Festergut and the Blood-Queen on 25 man ICC. Festergut gives me 10 stacks of something and then I die while the Blood Queen turns me into a vampire and I die. Can you solo these guys?

Which class are you playing?

I did this on my DK at 90. A good option was to use control undead on one of the putricide trash mobs that has the +100% damage buff and cast it on yourself.

If you are still unable to kill those bosses with double damage, you can look into some other options like timing when you acquire threat on festergut or using AMS to prevent application of one of those 10 stacks of debuffs. There should also be a way to have the blood queen bite your mind controlled mob first instead of you. I'd suggest you try the 100% dmg buff and timing your cooldowns before worrying about that though.

At that point they just put the addons into the base UI -- especially things like boss ability announcements, etc.

Blood Knight. I'll give this a try, see what I can do. Problem is, in my current lock I already killed pretty much every mob on that floor of ICC. Maybe I can try and control one of the Val'kyr?

Unless you killed putricide they should respawn.
