And I thought manga elf ears were ridiculous, but this is :abyssgazer:

Just a few years ago he said that he will "sink with a sinking ship". I suspect Blizzard became too strange a place for him and his contributions continued to dwindle. Surprisingly, this occurred a few months after Metrzen's return to the company. I wonder if this things are connected.

Warcraft IS a manga.
Sometimes it literally is.

Oh yeah, this one is from WoW's manual (it's black and white in the manual, tho):

I think the influence of manga is less nowadays than in the past. Look at this "realistic" style of Reforged and the new CGI. As I wrote somewhere, for some reason corporations think that "for adults" means "realistic and sentimental". Judging by how the fans reacted... the corporations are right.

Look at this "realistic" style of Reforged
Distinctly remember how despite having new and vastly more detailed character models the Reforged version somehow managed to look worse the twenty years old game.

According to this video, a more realistic style was chosen due to its similarity to mobile games:

In my opinion, this is only half the truth. If you look at the concept art from the presentation, you'll see how shitty they were. Did they escape into details and realism to cover their incompetence and lack of imagination?

I found an interview with Metzen about his RPG, and specifically about the creative method he and Blizzard adopted. This explains a lot in the context of the current turmoil in Warcraft:

My first thought would be that, in some ways, designing a campaign is remarkably similar to what I did most at Blizzard all those years. Writing down ideas, framing up worlds, and creating logic between moments in history. If you’re a world builder or an “idea guy”, you’re absolutely bound to the system itself, the core of game design, the fantasy experience that you want people to feel. Whether it’s an RTS, an MMO, or an ARPG - whatever it is, you know you start with a fantasy. We try to build a structure that enables the player to feel their accomplishments, to feel the fantasy through the gameplay.

One of Blizzard’s core principles is “Gameplay First”. I wasn’t always overly fond of that particular value, but at the end of it, it is true, right? If a thing isn’t fun in the first two minutes, it doesn’t matter how great your story was.

That is why some ideas just aren’t going to work within that video game system. Some of the big themes are just too much for some video games, right? We argued a lot about Starcraft II, for instance - I wanted it to feel like “Gone with the Wind” in space - you know, this kind of sweeping tragic romance. But in the end, a lot of designers were like “Dude. Nobody wants that, right? They just want to feel like a badass general and slaughter Zerg …”

Gone with the Wind in space would have been better than fighting a gigantic space slug while Kerrigan merges with another gigantic space slug to become an angel and DBZ laser beam the other gigantic space slug. The Terran campaign of SC1 and Wings of Liberty were the only times I really cared about the Starcraft story.

Their whole mobile game focus fiasco that's happening the last few years must be because they are gunning for the asian market. Mobile gaming is huge there.

Stil tho. Pretty dick move to start developing all of your IP's with that mind.

The question is not how to enjoy WoW's story. But can WoW's story be enjoyed?

The answer is "no". It can't be enjoyed.

The video is not of the highest editing quality, but the guy has some interesting points. For example, the fact that characters in movies always have "sad puppy eyes".

Wow (nomen omen)! WoW analysis is much more interesting than actual gameplay!

It is what it is. Just a sign of the times. Changes like these really show that video games are not art but a product instead.

Modern entertainment is being made by the children of broken families. Their parents were not present in their lives; they were in daycare or at school all day. Gen Y had a spiritually deprived existence, and replaced that with inappropriate things. Gen Y replaced missing attachments to parents and siblings and the lack of communities with entertainment and fandoms, or in this case some sort of "family isn't born, it's chosen" schtick. Curious that none of these writers have thought about starting big families of their own and actually being involved in their children's lives.

I've been watching SingSing's stream the last few days on my second monitor/laptop. He's playing the WoW Classic HC thing and it looks like a very cozy and enjoyable experience. I don't know how but he seems to have very little meta information about the game. He's just walking around Elvyn Forest, some other starting zones and having a blast. Good vibes all around.

Maybe with WoW if you enjoy the world you will also inevitably enjoy the story?

Not everyone necessarily comes from broken families and not everyone will start one, but there are certainly no strong bonds there. When older developers mention their children, it's hard for me to imagine any serious cultural transmission between grandparents, children and grandchildren. These processes didn't start yesterday, maybe now we're seeing a moment where the whole concept of family has completely degenerated.

This makes me wonder - what will tomorrow bring?

I don't know if this translates into liking, i.e. a positive attitude, but if he likes the gameplay, the plot will only be an interlude for killing mobs.

Personally, I really liked the plots in strategic Warcraft games. Not because I'd never seen or read anything better, but it worked well with the style and gameplay. I tried to get into WoW, but too many things "crack" for me.

However, assessing the Warcraft plot as a carrier of values and a model of changes in the modern world is very interesting.

I've always played WoW for the story/world, which is why I rarely play WoW anymore. I miss the aesthetic of the Warcraft 3 - Burning Crusade era of WoW. It had such a cooler grimdark aesthetic and the player base was so much weirder and niche. The in-game models and promo art was so much better than whatever tf we got now. Unless my gf wants to play WoW or I have a really strong craving I never touch it anymore. Capeshit fantasy needs to die.
