What's the best equipment to start with VR nowdays?

What's the current recommendations for a mid-range VR setup? I don't actually want to buy anything, but I want a frame of reference for a few years from now when the tech has matured a bit and dropped in cost.

Quest 2 with all the bells and whistles for comfortable wear, good headphones and a dedicated router for wireless pcvr is not even half of what the Vive Pro 2 costs, more like one third of the cost. The Vive Pro 2 is a 1300 dollar wired headset with lots of quality issues that really should not be in a product this expensive. If you want to go wireless you have to buy a wireless kit that adds weight, needs additional software that is known for not being very stable and that costs itself as much as a Quest2.

However, just this week a more direct competitor to the Quest 2 has entered the European market, the Neo Pico 3. Its basically a Quest 2 clone but with a display port cable, which means you can play native PCVR games without compression (the one drawback to the Quest2 that actually matters). It has its own standalone shop, wireless pcvr capability and wired pcvr with a better picture almost on par with the HP Reverb G2.

BTW the Quest2 will get stripped of its mandatory facebook account somewhen in the near future.

I still don't even want one. I will forget to unplug the cameras. There are two cameras on the Index and they face the wall mostly. I will not willingly allow any more such surveillance in my living quarters.

Tested ps vr, first mod was pretty bat, second one is good choice. If you already have playstation it's thing that can improove your gaming world. And there are a lot of accecories, their cost is really high

Thats actually a fair point. I'm a bold man but i wouldn't dare jerking off with 4 Zuckerberg cameras strapped to my face. So if you're planning on doing VR porn, the Quest2 is not the way to go.

Whats your pc specs and whats your wireless setup like? Maybe i can help out. I can play pretty much any game on 1.4Supersampling, highest fidelity. Some minor jitters here and there but overall its very good performance wise. Compression matters more or less depending on the game you play. I play 80% wireless PCVR via Airlink.

Yeah thats most likely the issue. 5ghz wifi is strongly suggested for airlink and its signal deterriorates even through thin walls. Your Internet speed is not an adequate indicator, you only need the fastest, uncongested wifi connection between your pc and your quest that you can get. If you want to invest 30 bucks you can buy a dedicated router for airlink which you place close to your playspace and set up as access point, either wired to your mainrouter or via powerlink. Its also very important to connect it to your pc via ethernet 1ghz bandwidth. The archer c6 gets recommended alot on VD and Airlink discord. Just use a different SSID for 5ghz, choose an uncongested channel (there is an app that lets you check the use of wifi channels in your neighbourhood) 80mhz channel bandwidth and let only your Quest2 connect to it.

It should improve airlink/vd quality by a lot.

Wireless works good only in 5G at 100MHZ , and even there you have to be quite close, at those frequencies you can almost consider the waves like light and be blocked the same way. Else it stutters and lags , or is just plain unplayable.
That said Quest 2 is both the cheaper and the best headset today by far, its trcking way better than the reverb G2 for exmeple . Wireless that makes a huge difference.

Quest 2 is pretty great.
It's cheap. And in addition it can work as a stand alone device not needing a PC.
It has an android device inside the headset. So it can run games on itself.
Kind of like it's own console?

I heard the next PS5 VR headset is going to be great. But then... I don't think you will be able to play PC games on it.
So no SteamVR?

Metaberg is also working on a new headset.
If you can wait a bit, I think the new generation of headset is just around the corner. The current gen is also pretty good, but... it's a few years old now?

Just in case somebody didn't know, you can use Quest 2 without a Facebook account and you can get most of the games for free. It's slightly fussy to do the initial setup, but then you don't have to take any extra actions.

The main problem is that the games are either a bit boring, or they cause motion sickness.

Well how well does Airlink work? I pretty much have a perfect setup and i use airlink about 70% of the time. Cable does give you better visuals though so its always handy to have a cable for games that struggle with compression.

I just got a Quest 2 and as a boxing fan and former amateur competitor I had the time of my (gaming)life playing Creed.

Really good shit. It was FNR level but with the VR novelty. Felt fresh and old at the same time. It is hands down the best boxing game available on PC.

And I wouldn't be surprised if someone managed to actually lose weight playing it. Even virtual boxing is a good aerobic exercise.

Considering a Quest 2 but I'm not so sure VR in its present state is quite there yet. Don't wanna waste $300 on a new toy I use for 2-3 games then put in storage for a few years.
