What game are you wasting time on?

Occasionally, I am tempted to click on the Civilization V icon on my screen.

There is just one thing that annoys me. The really long loading time for just the menu screen to open, let alone for an actual game.

Yes, 45 seconds is not that long, but it is too long a wait after clicking a game's icon and expecting to play that game soon. In order to pass your time during that wait, they play a very pretentious cinematic. Annoyance with that cinematic led me to disabling it. But the dark screen that replaces it is no better.

Moreso than the actual design or gameplay of the game, it's this worthless loading time that kills my interest in playing Civilization V. Crysis 2 loads quicker, both on the opening menu and on the actual game. Can you imagine?

So once upon a time, there were games that took 30 minutes to load.

Now, we have games such as Metal Gear Solid 4, with 90 minute unskippable cinematics in between the actual game.

How far has gaming advanced.

Got nothing to do. I remembered that I bought Titan Quest on a steam sale some time ago. Thinking of installing it. Any feedback? Is it worth it?

Haven't tried the mod you mentioned, could you tell me the name or give me the link? Have you seen any notable differences between vanilla AI and the modded AI?

Sure. The AI is much better with force composition, will defend and attack much more sensible, will upgrade its provinces much better, will go for the trade nodes a lot more vehement. Diplomacy seems a bit more subtle as well, though I am not sure if that's from the mod or that latest patch. Game basically becomes quite a bit more difficult through this and the modder claims that he is not using any money or troop scripts. Had the AI become Shogun a number of times already. No matter how he does it, fighting the AI is a lot more fun than in vanilla. And vanilla is already a huge step up from previous games. Highly recommended.

http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=440700

EDIT: Only retarded design decision is that the modder 'sneaked' in his photo on the main screen by pasting it over one of the samurai. Shit like that always makes me rage and nearly made me uninstall. Glad I didn't. Still, what the fuck did he think when he basically ruined the main screen like that? Guy looks like a typical autist as well. Glad he hasn't gone the Darth Vader way and put his little gimmick all over the game though.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. I'm still surprised with how good the vanilla game itself is. Had loads of fun with MP, especially when running all over campers. Oh the sweet, sweet sight of an army camping on a hill... It's just so much fun to see their defenses crumble. :D

I'm actually thinking of also going back to Medieval 2 with Deus Lo Vult. For some reason I can't get tired of seeing my badass English knights charging into battle.

Been playing the Witchaven series for some lulz and nostalgia. First one is better than I remember. Aside from some issues with jumping being tied to CPU power (easily fixed with DOSBox) and the game's strange way of deciding when you hit and when you miss, it's fun. Some interesting levels, the RPG elements predate Hexen II by a few years and the weapons actually feel and work differently from each other. Really good soundtrack too. Second game is decline incarnate: shorter (about half the length), more confused levels with less interesting features, buggier, with a laughably easy final boss.

I'm pondering what to play next. Might continue on a Build trip through Powerslave, Tekwar and NAM.

Dynasty Warriors 7.

King of button-mashing games, fun as hell if coop-ed, yet still has great storytelling and made me care more about it's characters (62 of them) than Wicther, Dragon Age or Mass Efect ever did. Besides, it's really challenging in Chaos mode. :)

About twenty hours into Risen and I'd rank it slightly below Gothic 2 -- it's better in some areas but not as good in others. I know people had a problem with the ending or something so my opinion might change but still a really good game so far.

G2 > Risen > G1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> G3 (even with the community patch).

Are you kidding? G1 worse than G2 and Risen? O.o

I could agree that NotR is better than G1, but G2 and Risen are definitely not. G1 was a gem when it came to the atmosphere and story was better than SAVE TEH WORLD.

Not saying it's 'worse' per say, but if I had to rank them I'd put G2 and Risen ahead of G1 And when I say G2 I meant the entire package with NoTR included. As far as 'save t3h world,' isn't that what G1's plot eventually boiled down to by the fourth chapter? Regardless, G1 is still a great game but it just has it's shortcomings... not surprising considering it is the first in the series and they learned and expanded.

They are ridicouly over the top, but that's the game ideia. They show that right from the start, just watch any of the games intros. And still it's much more engaging than those grimdark/tight ass games out there. Fuck Hawke/Sheppard/Gerrad, I wanna see what Cao Cao is gonna do.

It is. It's the only economic series I can play forever (and I do since 2000). 1404 is the best in the series, it's even better than the first game, because there's more things to do. It kinda plays like sim city, except much better (sim cities bore to death after some time). I'd recommend it to everyone, even those who do not like games like this in general. You build up settlements on islands, trade and sometimes have to wage a war on another player (can be both AI or human, I rarely play with people though).

Anyway: Just play it. Preferably 1404 (+Venice), alternatively 1602. Don't play 1701 or 1503, they are pretty bad.

Finishing up the games I got from the steam sales now. Did 2 consecutive playthroughs of New Vegas which netted me 56 hours of gametime and am now playing Eschalon 2 with Dungeons of Dredmor in between everything else. Also building a Pirate town in Minecraft with my bros. Probably gonna finish up the Back to the Future games which are pretty good so far. Or go replay Fallout 2.

Just started playing the Panzer General Forever remake. Pretty damn good, nice interface improvements over the original. Playing as the krauts I just kicked some potato butt and am now massacring froggers.

Majesty 2 collection that I picked up for ~$4 during the Steam sale. It's fun so far but all the criticisms are valid: the only challenge is figuring out how to survive the first fifteen or so minutes before you get your base up and running and mid level heroes with which you can clear out the monster dens. After that it's easy. Wouldn't recommend it for anyone looking for a strategy game it really is just a 'fantasy sim' -- you sit back and watch your heroes slug it out and there aren't any major decisions to be made. Still, it's sort of a nice relaxing experience.

WinSPMBT is an awesomely sick shit.

Playing the USMC invading North Korea mission. Several tank companies together with a lot of APCs and choppers carrying troops to the battlefield, a lot of bombers and artillery all against fucking N. Korea on a map where there are no open fields - eternal hills and mountains. And every hill and mountain has a trench or a bunker full of commies overwatching another hill full of commies and then there is a defensive line further north which just shits out commies out of every hole in zerg numbers. And send planes to do strafing runs against me and bombard me with their artillery.
And my tanks are getting stuck on rocks and in the snow rendering them almost useless. But I have to cross hills and mountains because mines are literally everywhere.

So hard.

I love it.

Playing StarCraft Brood War. Never played this one before.

Also, I'm thinking of trying Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Anyone played it?

Assassin's Creed: Bumfacehood, and "wasting time" is entirely correct. So much goddamn MMO-style filler - climb 24 viewpoints! Destroy 9 sails! Do 10 courtesan missions! Destroy 10 Borgia towers! Collect 5 Ambergris, 3 tomatoes and a severed head! Buy 12 tailors and 17 blacksmiths! I know most of it's optional, but the game has addiction-based gameplay down too damn well. I'm also feeling a lot less forgiving of the automated gameplay, heavy amount of cutscenes and linearity than I was with AC2 just a year ago.

I like the additional objectives to each mission, though, it actually adds a sense of challenge to the series that has been ridiculously lacking so far. And I continue to love the batshit insane Illuminatus! storyline, intentionally silly or not.
