"I know they never promised a strict keyword system, but once that was delivered to go back and change it shows they are willing to change things that have already been designed to cater to the least denominator."

Wait, what? I haven't been following W2 news (Generally ignore games except for the occasional video until they're finished), what did they change on the dialog?

Ah, I see. This is probably the questionable bit.

"One of the suggestions from the fans was that the Ranger party should deliver a line of dialog instead of just barking a keyword. We really love this idea. Having full sentences creates a natural conversation flow. Additionally, this approach allows us to remove the ambiguity of keywords – holding your mouse over a keyword will show you a preview of the sentence your Rangers will say."

Yeah, not terribly keen on that myself either. Was kinda looking forward to just barking keywords. Still, could've been worse I suppose.

Cow you made me sad. What is wrong with full sentences?
Nothing in and of themselves, but unless your RPG has particularly good writing you could get along fine with keywords. Especially if they're going to be as fancy and reactive as they're trying to imply they will be. Writing full dialog for the PC's party is just additional effort that seems unnecessary. And if the dialog system is still based around keywords (Which that seems to imply it is) then it's even more unnecessary since all your dialog options are still "Spiderbot" "Gun cache" "Blobert" even if they get additional flowery padding if you hover over them. It won't change the mechanics of the keyword dialog system itself, you'll still basically just be mining information out of NPCs. The advantage of a fully written dialog system would be giving you more fine control over responses, multiple ways of saying/asking the same thing with possibly different results, etc. The Wasteland 2 system doesn't really have that except via party composition/stats/skills influencing the reaction to the keywords.

But I am sure you will agree that the addition of the grammar does add to the depth of the response in a very concrete manner.
I'm pretty sure he just spent a whole post saying he doesn't think it adds depth. Allow me to express the same opinion. There is no meaningful different between "rangers" and "what can you tell me about the rangers?". I also thought it added character to the game to have the keywords.

It is undoubtedly pleasing to read the full sentence
I bet 90% of the sentences are extremely boring and not at all pleasing.

and know exactly what is being said with what intention.
I actually would have preferred a more abstract way of doing it than having full sentences.

Another case of game journalists being hired into the incestuous hive of scum and villainy that is the videogame industry. Don't believe me? The metamorphosis is already happening. :rpgcodex:

You still get your list of keywords you can select. If you dislike the full sentences so much, just ignore them.

It isn't a huge deal to me, I just thought the keyword system, as shown, was nifty.

I just saw the gameplay footage. F-bomb? Wonderful. I thought I was helping to fund a game in keeping with the best that classic games, not the worst of modern ones. I wasn't aware I was funding a game I don't care to play myself let alone recommend to my friends and family. How many customers are you eliminating with this choice? Oh ya, you don't give a ****, you got your money already. I'm seriously reconsidering investing in any kickstarter ever again.

Note: This person pledged money to the CARMAGEDDON Kickstarter. :patriot:

On a related note, I thought "fuck" was overused in the video by the scientist (?) at the AgriCentre.

I wish he could articulate the reasons why he didn't like the preview footage. Seems like a reasonable individual.

It was actually a higher density than we're aiming for game-wide, obviously, but also something that'll probably be tweaked even there. It's a high-pressure, panic situation, so yeah there's gonna be swearing, but the density of swearing there is typical something that gets polished up a little during writing passes.
