What was MCA's big reveal?

Haven't heard anything as far as an MCA Kickstarter project, but he has offered to draw a custom Codex Troll for anyone that donates $250+ dollars to the Codex statue fund.

I wonder if the Kickstarter market is getting too saturated and MCA missed the boat after Wasteland 2 was announced. I'd certainly pledge to an MCA project, and I suspect much of the Codex would. But how many other people would be willing to donate to two (hopefully) old-school RPGs? I think I'd want to wait at least 33 more days if I were planning a crowd-funded RPG.

If MCA/Obsidian is going to launch a kickstarter I doubt it will be for a few months at least.

I was never able to buy FONV because no DRM free version was ever released. Fucking Bethesda. I hated having to pirate it. Hopefully MCA and Feargus will cook up a juicy kickstarted sequel-in-spirit to PS:T and I can shower them with pieces of eight to make amends. I actually think Obsidian could do quite well with the kickstarter model. Go back to their BIS roots. Maybe they could keep a separate branch for fellating the mega-publishers with South Park and Dungeon Siege and other horseshit. I always hated the idea of giving money to evil publishers anyway. Giving money directly to the developer is great.

Good thing they increased the 10K donations available because someone pushed it up to 9.

No. Steam is DRM and not even mild DRM like a license number or something . You really need an internet connection. I know you can play without a connection, but I don't think you can do the initial install without a connection. I don't always live somewhere with an internet connection, and I still like to be able to play games. Especially with no internet. I could just use the pirated version of course, but I'm sure as hell not going to pay when I'm forced to pirate. I was hoping that Bethesda would eventually release a non steam DVD version, but of course they never did. Despite many requests on their forums. It doesn't sound like Obsidian is getting per copy royalties anyway.

If you're in a situation similar to a soldier being deployed somewhere, then the moral thing to do is probably to buy the game, if you really like it, and then use a crack to remove Internet checks.

Well I was waiting for a 'Complete' edition of FO:NV but now I don't think I'll bother...maybe if it's in a bargain bin for 10 lei(3 dollars) somewhere eventually as Fallout 3 was.

Anyway, fuck them. MCA and Josh just need to knuckle down for the next 6 months, think what they'd like to make, make projections, then use Kickstarter to fund The Black Hound(most of the preliminary work is already done and it's different enough from BG to not even need the FR universe so no worry rights) or a Planescape game. I'd like an AP2 but better a surer thing for the moment.

Piracy isn't a moral issue for me. I'm not masochistic enough to be bent over and fucked in the ass by Bethesda without even the decency of a reach-around and then pay for the privilege. I don't mind rewarding the publisher for publishing it and I certainly want to reward the developer for making it, but they are not cooperating by selling me a game that actually works. Without an internet connection that is. They are just writing off the entire population of people who don't have reliable home internet connections. But now that I know Obsidian isn't even getting a piece of the action I'd be a lot less inclined to pay them even if they did release a DRM free version.

Doesn't Metacritic have amateur reviews? If so Obsidian could have leaked the info about their contract and FONV fans could have swarmed the metacritic site to make sure it got a high enough score. The Metacritic thing was a particularly cheap shot because Fallout 3 itself sucked so very hard. I think the very existance of New Vegas put their shitty excuse for a "good for what it is" version of Fallout in a better light. Fallout 3 itself sure as hell doesn't deserve more than an 85/100 score.

Yeah, they'll need to let people's bank accounts regenerate before asking for money. Also, they need to work out a specific project, make some concept art and basic design document. People will be much more likely to kickstart when they know what they're getting, "Crowdsourced Hardcore RPG by Obsidian" isn't going to cut it.

MCA has a bunch of fans among intelligent storyfags who loved PS:T, so there's an extra funding base that isn't really tapped by Wasteland 2.

Yeah, they should focus on that South Park game as much as possible in order to make it as good as possible so that they survive, and after that's done and the WL2 Kickstarter craze has died down, they should start their own Kickstarter project. It's not like they lack old hardcore RPG projects that could be resurected: Torn, Black Hound, take your pick.
