I don't understand why I have only 17% to hit on Ore Golem (12 PER, firearm Expert). Is he realy have so high Evasion or what?
First of all you should be Master Firearms by that point. That makes your distance between enemy not important.
Ore Golems are magical creatures which means the more advanced guns will require your TECH APTITUDE high to offeset penalties.

I’m in Tarant and haven’t found many quests to do but I’m also kind of early in the game. Do quests open up later when you are higher level or something? I remember there being a lot more quests when I played a long time ago. I’m playing a half orc and maybe people don’t like me enough?

Follow the quest to find Schuyler and Sons, it will lead you around town. You also (may have) found that matchbook cover at the crash. There are lots of quests that open up just by talking to random people. The ring in the sewer, the mystic, the tombstone. Lots of things, but the role playing aspect is that your stats, disposition (good/evil), and race play a part in quite a few quests.

There's not THAT many actually, just some of them are quite complex and some yes locked under level/plot progress requirement. As the old school thing goes, talk to every last (non-walking in this case) NPC.

Since this is actually an rpg, talk to every npc you can find.
More important characters tend to "stand out" and have higher levels.
As a half-orc, people won't like you that much unless you have high Beauty (but wasting character points on Beauty is just not recommended).

I'd recommend high points in Beauty at least once. There aren't a lot, but there are some unique interactions going around and everyone's reaction is love. Get to the mid game, with a melee char and at about level 20, you can afford to burn points. Then sink points in beauty. Around that area Stillwater is about right.

I'm thinking of making a new character different from gunslinger since I don't know if I have the patience to dig myself out of the hole I'm in now. Any suggestions on fun builds? I was thinking of a retarded ogre but that might just become an old gimmick.

Retarded ogre is relatively fun. Just punch whoever you like... you can afford that after all. Especially if you pick tempo magic later on.

But you can also start as a shadow guy or a mage.

Is a shadow guy a thief or something? I always assumed prowling in this game would be harder than it's worth.

Arcanum is not convoluted when it comes to builds, you'll probably gonna be effective unless you want to be jack of all trades. Don't know what to suggest since my favorite is always tech guy. Guess as jackofshadows said you can always try a mage build.

I tried ogre techie with pyro axe and motorized armor. I bypassed the int cap with an artifact from arcanum "expansion" mod to be able to craft all i want. Used exploit to get to Caladon very early and got stuck there until i remembered about Gorgoth's pass. I expected the game to react a lot to my char being a half ogre, but very few characters do. I think orc muggers don't attack you because they are afraid and few other characters have something to say, but that's it.

If you go full retard the dialogue with Virgil will be hilarious. Once i created a retarded woman character, didn't play too far tho.

POOPERSCOOPER If you do make a low Int character be prepared to miss out on a lot of content and story.
Not to mention many characters not joining your party.

Prowling is broken as fuck actually. Or rather coupled with backstab (and melee, obviously speaking). My all time favorite build. The only problem is, it's coming online a bit late but personally I love slow builds like that. Another problem for newcomers is that both prowling and backstab masters are very well hidden in the game. Which balances this thing out I'd say.

Never tried Prowling, but I think you can even hide in plain sight at Master level?

I did a gunslinger and getting my ass handed to me

Don't worry about it. Playing a gunslinger is indeed the hardest way to approach the early game, but it's worth it because once you get further in and get some better guns it's highly amusing.
Don't forget to level up just a lil' magick for your gunslinger, tempus fuckit makes doing your bang bang just that little bit sweeter.

Is this even viable for a techie to learn magic school? I thought that at some point spells and potions just stop working if your tech afinity is too high.

Haste Potion works.
So does the Temporal magick school.
Also the Intellect Potion.

I stuck with the same character who is a gunslinger and just tried to level up as much as I can doing quests and he survives much better in combat now. Moral story is not to bitch out and keep fighting :salute:

You will need to get your hands on some serious firepower as a gunslinger, as you will need it later on when more powerful enemies appear.
The Elephant Gun is the most direct choice. There is also the Blade Launcher (you can get the schematic for it occasionally at a gunshop).
The Long Range pistol is also really good and also underrated. Again, you can find the schematic at a gunshop.

I already mentioned that here or in the other thread, gunslinger with magic speed buffs is crazily potent, although comes online slowly
