Where do I even begin… had my eye on this game for years, got legit version from gaming magazine (they used to put full games on discs so young folks would buy them, you won’t believe what hidden gems you could find there, and a lot of trash too obviously) but found out that there is better version but German only.

Then found both translation (done by NMA’s folks) and game on archive.org and gave it a shot.



Intro is German only but here is caption:

* Thunder *

Young Girl: Mom, it's thundering outside.
Mom: The storm can't reach us in here, don't be afraid.

Young Girl: I'm not afraid.
Mom: I know, you're brave my dear.

Young Girl: What exactly is bravery?
Mom: That's a good question. Men that risk themselves for others are brave,
but it can also be brave to tell the truth.

Young Girl: Is everyone brave like me?
Mom: * chuckles * Not everyone, but some are. Our leader, for example.

Young Girl: Why is he so brave?
Mom: I don't know.
Sometimes you must do things that you don't want to do at
all, or that you are afraid to, do you understand? We owe our leader a debt
of gratitude, you must never forget that. He was prepared to sacrifice his
life for us.

Young Girl: Mom. . .
Mom: Yes?
Young Girl: Tell me about our leader.

(Fade to white while zooming in on girl's eye)

Mom: The story begins long ago. Our leader was, at that time, a simple
wanderer. One of the gangs from the waste lands fell upon his village and
killed everyone who lived there, including his mother.

Young Girl: Our leader didn't have a mother any more?

Mom: No, he didn't, and at that time he didn't know where his father and
sister were either.

(scene change to desert)

Mom: He thought that they might have fled from the band.

Young Girl: He was all alone?

Mom: Yes, he was all alone, and because of this he looked for people who
would help him to find his mother and sister. One day he heard of people who
were calling themselves "The Government of the New Order."
They were looking for fighters in order to fight against the gangs.

Young Girl: I know the people from the Government! They run along the paths
all the time and stand guard.

Mom: That was a different Government at that time, my dear. Earlier
everything was much more dangerous.
Because of this the Government wanted to protect the living and fight against the gangs, and our leader wanted to join up with them. He wanted to find the gang that had destroyed his village and revenge himself upon them.

Young Girl: And he wanted to look for his father and sister!

(fade to next scene, the Leader running)

Mom: Exactly. He knew that he had a long and dangerous path ahead of him.
But our leader was not afraid, and he was very strong and brave. He traveled
for a long time and he was hungry and thirsty and the sun burned his face,
but eventually even such a difficult journey comes to an end...and so he
stood one day before the gates of the Government of the New Order...

There were some info about English release of Reloaded version on asian market, some chinese that Google Translate might put some light on it but I can’t arse myself to do that, and most likely they're not online anymore.

I though the gray skin on the characters in the intro was badly rendered model but you find later in the game why it’s not the case.

Game received ~1 GB of new voice lines in better quality, when games were like 2-4 GB big – that’s surely a lot.

My character comments on everything – describes every piece of junk laying in the wasteland, mumbling to himself about loons around her...

Physical Features section is pointless, it just shuffle around stats without removing or adding points from the current pool.
Life Experience, on the other hand, let you set different range of withdrawned points from skills.
Best one is Mechanical, no withdraws and additional points into Repair, no other choice give you better option.

Even though it's post apocalyptic world starting with melee is not good idea - too much shooters and turning into.
We start with 5-6 people, even that number with peashooters is considerable, just focus fire on any danger and beat them by number.
Speaking about combat - it's sort of like JA Back in Action RT garbo but you have both terrain and group advantage, even with garbage peashooters.
Plus - you can pump stats'n'skills to shoot faster so stunlock state is not a big deal.

Oh and for some reason fog is more noticeable on my Win 7 machine compared to my Win XP virtual PC, which bites me in the ass later when your sniper gain Camouflage talent and can't use this outright broken OP feature making you invisible. :rage:

This 4-lights system is weird but this is what you got in old games before some standards were set
from the left:
1) green mean character is selected
2) yellow mean you gain new level
3) red mean your character is unarmed (is that necessary? you have two slots right below so what's the point?)
4) blue mean your character is tired, can fall to the ground randomly

technicans can repair weapons, which is obvious, but thing is - only enemies and traders have broken guns.
One of the possible money making method is to buy broken guns for cheap and sell them for profit or whatever you need atm

sniper and shooter, but they share same problem with Butch - low INT. First few level-up start points go to rais INT, ont the contrary - it's not worth wasting stats to raise INT for bonus skillpoints (one measle at 15 INT).

We get Colt Anaconda.
For some reasons .44 ammo is way stronger than .357, I'm not a weapon expert but iirc hits from both .44 and .357 deal a lot of damage for a pistols then why they're so different in this game?

We might never know...

oh btw - Heavy Weapons is broad term, even M16 is considered Heavy so keep that in mind, it's not like Fallout in that regard

While we're here - Talents and what they do
Close Combat
Knockout - +10% chance of knockout out opponent
Avoid - -10% chance of being hit in close combat
Confusion - +10 of confusing enemy for 3 seconds
Stamina - -30% damage per close combat hit
Combo - 3 attacks before opponent can react

Light Weapons
Head shot - 2% chance of headshot with every hit
Steady shot - shooting when standing or kneeling is treated as prone.
Accuracy - 10% range increase and 5% accuracy increase
Fast Reload - reload light weapons in 1/10th the time

Heavy Weapons

Accuracy - 10% range and 5% accuracy increase
Steady Shot - standing or kneeling is treated as prone.
Shoulders - Heavy weapons count as 50% of weight
Fast Reload - reload heavy weapons on 1/10 weapon
Critical hit - +10% to chance of critical hit

Sniper Weapons
Accuracy - 10% range and 5% accuracy increase
Night sight - increases night time accuracy by 20%
Head shot - +20% chance to deal headshot
Camouflage - invisible to enemy when prone at more than 30ft
Steady shot - shooting when standing or kneeling is treated as a prone.

Throwing Weapons
Accuracy - 10% range increase and 5% accuracy increase

Explosives
Defuse - chance to defuse explosives of any kind increased by 30%
Blast Locks - Locks on doors and boxes can be opened with gunpowder.
Detect Booby Trap - Doors, locks, safe booby traps are detected and defused
Maximum Explosive Effect - explosives cause 30% more damage
Build explosives - make exposives with charges and remote fuses himself

Survival
Feigning death - character pretends to be dead and remains unnoticed during encounters
Cooking - Can cook meat.
Influence Animals - alter animal behavior whether to stop attacks or stop fleeing

Stealth
Sneaking fast - Sneak at running speeds
Camouflage - get 20% closer without detection
Crawling Fast - crawl at sneaking speeds
Night Camouflage - get 30% closer before being detected

Pick Pocket
Inside pockets - permits players to remove items from inside pockets, increasing spoils from pick pocket

Lock Picking
Booby trapped Locks - automatically detect booby traps on locks
Boxes - 20% bonus when opening boxes
Doors - 20% bonus when opening doors

Technical
Repair Weapons - repair weapons
Strengthen Armor - +1 to leather, chain, or plate armor
Manipulate ammunition - You can produce Dum-Dum bullets for regular ammunition
Strengthen Armor parts - +1 to all helmets, shoes, and gloves
Tuning - make vehicle +20% faster

Speech
Teach - able to give a 5% boost to another character on strongest
attribute.
Entertainment - entertain others and receive a reward for doing so.
Offending - draw all hostile action to you within 30m
Trade - Get a 20% trade boost.
Increase Morale - +20 on skills for 5 minutes, Use ability once
every 24 hours
Offending - draw agro from all attackers within 30 meters

Drive
Drive Carefully - prevent LE during trip
Repair Vehicles - nuff said
Driving Tricks - optimize driving skills
Road Trip - Groups life energy restore during trips

Medical
Light Wounds - Fully heal characters that are 85% health or more.
Regeneration - Speed up healing of whole group during rest periods
Psychology - target character gets +2 to all attributes for 5 minutes, Use once every 24 hours.
Alternative Medicine - heal and detoxify using various herbs
Resuscitate - Raise dead characters within 5 min of death

Some of them useless, some pretty great or outright broken.
Like Entertainer - it let you aquire items that you might not see until later.
Camouflage (Snipers) would be great but for some dumb reasons I got this stupid fog obscuring my vision, it wasn't there on virtual machine with Wndows XP.
Repair Weapons is mandatory, getting guns cheaper and reselling them when fixed is decent way to get cash.
Speech talents are for your created character only, no NPC can use them, period.
Also - Steady Shot is great too.

Whenever you will blow the locks or lockpick - it's up to you.

it's weird that Agnes know Survival well despite the fact that she's a vegan and sometimes throw tantrum ("Ugh!") when you put the meat in her inventory or ask her to chew it. And yes you can and should cook the meat for more HP gain. Reminds me Gothic...
Speaking of meat - it's good to restore HP (medkits are too expensive and we don't know herbal medicine yet) but they have stacks of 2 max, which results in cluttering the inventory with beef jerky.
You can see that Agnes got some XP for applying her Talent for the first time.

Out talky gal can get this talent. It play a little animation, can be used only once per NPC and give random item in return. And it's wide variety - you can either have junk of value (1) or sniper rifle that goes for (100).

there is a fukton of walking in the game but on the bright side - you can climb steep hills like these which helps a lot in the journey

Decent gunner but most importantly - survivalist with no meat affection, bout time
We pass the knife to him, for now he can strip some fur from wild animals but later he can get his hands on claws and teeth
Here comes nasty surprise - furs are HEAVY, about 10kg each, in a game with average 40kg carry weight limits it
We can run to trader or ditch the items on main road or entrance to the map and pick them later.

Nice but this place is exception and all other items can be found in containers and chests only (and dead bodies, duh).

Which container have anything? You can't tell because mouse cursor does not change. You have to press RMB, wait a moment to show context menu, press the eye icon to examine, then watch dancing animation (character can examine items under certain angle), repeat x1000 time through the game.

I found some camp in the southeast corner of the map when this happened.
Milton can find water sources, with high Survival skill he can find them in larger radius.
They hold few (2-4) portions of waters, each restore 10hp, there is at least one water source on each map.

Camp is empty, David still asks for Sara, I'm stuck.

This is the camping screen, we can pull out matress out of thin air and rest a little, at least 8h to remove penalities from exhaustion.
You can see people playing cards, guitar, flute and else.
This is the only way to trigger random encounters with either Seeker gang or wild animals. Gangs at least drop the loot...

Nice range, fire rate but no burts.
That's the pain - you can't spam single fire at range and then switch to burst/full auto in close encouters, each gun have certain fire mode.
You can duct tape laser pointer or silencer to the gun but you need duct tape.
Guess how many duct tapes I've got in my first playthrough?
One.

And we test Play Dead talent for the first time.
Maybe for some advanced tactics but with 6 people there is no need for fooling around.

Another one have dimishing return - explosive lockpick is back and we get some crafting component. Sadly we ain't gonna do much about it because you gonna miss one or two components, always. Like duct tape - found only one through the whole game, with all containers looted and visiting traders once in a while.
From what I experienced traders gets different gun/armor every day, those good enough to be Deal of the Day at least.

Next destination - Bowie Village.

Even after patches you get some nice bugs like those - Victor put blackpowder on the chest inside, glitched out of the shack when getting up from the squat stance.

Got another armor and baseball bat.
Going melee is bad idea, unless you want to grind random encounters when camping, and you got animals to bash on.
It sells for (10), that's some 9mm ammo and broken Uzi that we still can't fix.

Good thing there was no real skillcheck in the dialog, otherwise it would be a hard stop for my adventure, near the end game - it would hurt for sure
There is another, not mentione again, time limit - we have to run to each corners of the map and disarm red lights on the stone columns.
Since we have only one expert (Victor) and there might be enemies around (fucking bears1 can you believe that?) thing might get messy.

There is Arena but since my character was not Melee (why would you if there is plenty of ammo?) I had to pass.

Finally finished reading this LP, I have a few pending ones from the Codex and this was one of them. Man, this looks boring.
What exactly did cause the Apocalypse? It probably wasn't that bad if all of the scientists of before are still alive and not aged that much. There are roaming bands of psychos, but of course, but they felt boring in comparison with other games.
After watching Mandalore's review/lp about The Mystery of the Druids, I began paying attention to German protagonists. Indeed, this one features a psycho as well, so the clichés are true (although in this case it's somewhat justified). What's not though is why so many people so crazy and traitorous, even for a post-apocalypse scenario. Must be part of the so-called German humor. Their obsession about shit and (ugly) asses is also a real thing as well, it seems.
Do vehicles change much the gameplay? It seems standard Realtime-with-pause stuff ala 7.62.
Also, that joke with the return from the future is pure cringe.
The highscores mentioned have to be false or the result of bribes.

Anyways, thank you for sacrificing your time playing shit/German games.

Why play as a woman though? Just to know. The intro tried to play it as "gender-neutral", but I'm certain it makes more sense if the leader is a dude. Not that it changes much, if at all.
