Vehicular mechanics in RPGs?

I've thinking about how driving a vehicle could work in non-fantasy rpgs (it could be extended to the concept of riding animals and monsters though). They could be either just transportation tools like the highwayman in Fallout 2 or could have some combat use in enemy encounters as well having a skill set that describes how good your character is at driving different different types of such

Jet skis add a cool dimension to Underrail: Expedition combat. The trick to vehicular combat is that it easily nullify a lot of your character's natural abilities. Your strength and skill in wielding a great sword are worthless if you're stuck inside a tank.

Mount and Blade 2 has a set of riding skills. In Vagrus you kinda drive a caravan but thats fantasy rpg. Mechs count as a vehicle? Mech tactics game from Paradox has pilot skills and different mechs. Starcitizen? Starfield? Planetside 2?

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Bubbles In Memoria
I think I read from somewhere that ancient Twilight 2000 had some skills/mechanics about vehicles.
Never tried it myself.

edit.

Video part 1 is character creation.
Part 2 is actual gameplay with some vehicle stuff.

Yeah, CDDA is not for everyone but it does give you a lot of options in that regard, probably more than any other game. You can build a sleek and efficient machine or a mammoth death mobile that tears down buildings.

You can drive in Project Zomboid and it feels pretty good. There's mechanics and electronics skills, as well driving related traits like Speed Demon/Sunday Driver. Speed Demon lets you drive faster, which is a double edge sword--very useful to get out of a tough spot, but you'll also crash more easily. Hopefully build 42 expands that area of the game to be more like CDDA, as right now customization is limited.

Mad Max lets you customize your car and upgrade it in an RPG sort of way, but overall it's just another Ubislop trash game.

There's Racing Lagoon for the PS1. Many people love it, I haven't tried it.

I'd really like to see more vehicle stuff in RPGs. Have a designated driver/mechanic with relevant stats, invest in your vehicle, etc.

Many Paragon games had some kind of vehicular transportation, but it didn't play that much of a role. Like, you could rent a vehicle and go exploring any planet in Megatraveller 2, but everything of importance happened in the spaceport cities so there was no point going out to begin with.

Modern RPGs have small maps so it makes vehicles unfeasible imo.

Fallout Tactitcs had multiple vehicles, driver skill and you needed to repair cars with toolboxes. Though i doubt anyone actually enjoyed driving in this game. Except in Macomb, that mission was fire, expecially when raiders on amphetamine shot rpg rockets and threw molotovs at your hummer.

Many tabletop RPGs that are set in a modern or futuristic setting, or are "generic" systems, will have rules for vehicular combat or vehicular chases. The various Star Wars RPGs, GURPS, Savage Worlds, Shadowrun, and other such games.

I don't see those rulesets implemented in cRPGs. It's probably because they are abstracted to work on a table with pen and paper, and a lot of developers prefer real time or action combat based solutions to vehicle combat. However, they could be a source of inspiration for an indie CRPG developer.

ATOM RPG's GAZ SG-1 copies Fallout 2's Highwayman as a pack mule and means of faster overworld travel.

Wasteland 3's Kodiak is also used for overworld travel (with radiation protection) but additionally can participate in outdoor combat with upgradeable weapon systems.

Starflight comes to mind for me. You spend a lot of time/effort tricking out both your ship and the rover. Certainly more than on your crew. It's a shame that it never got a sequel, and that the definitive version was released on the genesis of all things.

Pathfinder: Wrath
Realms of Arkania HD.
The first game has both riding and boat driving skills and neither mounts nor boats to ride or drive.
You can book a trip on a ship though.

Pathfinder WOTR has mounted combat with a set of related skills. They got me interested when the kickstarter goal was reached. Turned out to be a dissappointment on release.
