I can tell you I've been running it on Vista with Drog's patches with no significant issues, and doing nothing special to get it running, except maybe having User Account Control turned off. So Vista is not necessarily your problem there.

I am having an issue with Benjamin Gershwin and the Ren'ar skulls.

I have installed the english version of the game, patched it to 1.0.7.4, installed UAP080708.exe followed by UAPEXP080626.exe and Arc1024x768Ed_080806.exe.

The issue is that he doesn't give me the skulls back, even though that should have been fixed by the patch.
What could have gone wrong?

I am unsure whether this is the only fix not working for me, but as this is my first playthrough, I don't want to read through the change log, or it could spoil something.

*POTENTIAL SPOILERS*

It crashes just when I reach the Isle Of Despair. When the screen turns black to load the are of the Isle, almost instantly I get sent to the desktop and a window pops up saying Arcanum's crashed.

I tried 3 times all with the same outcome. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I'm using Windows Vista and from what I remember, I patched it with the black tooth patch, which I assume is the same patch refered to in this thread but pardon my ignorance if its not.

Thanks!

Sorry to have posted silly questions.
The User account manager might have been it. Or one of the numerous updates which didn't install until I turned the computer off and on again, not just restarting.
Thanks both anyway.
Now I am playing happily.

How strong magical allignement must one have to fully exploit The ring of influence by the way?

That's odd, Arcanum rarely crashes to the desktop. Did you start a new game after installing the patch? Try reinstalling the game, and if the problem persists feel free to upload the save.

3; 68; 151; 161; 171; 182; 262; 326; 316
which were the only options where he agreed to give the skulls.

Thanks.

I fixed another line originally, but turns out there's a problem with line 315 as well. There was a typo which was preventing him from giving you the skulls.

More restored content (it's kinda funny that there's still plenty of omitted stuff even after all these months of patching).

I restored two unused food types: alcohol and poison. Food types determine what icon is shown for an item, so these two icons are now restored.

5 items will be affected by this.

EDIT: Voting time!

I managed to make NPCs display their age again. You see, the game was designed to have this feature, and many NPCs have unique age. Did you know that Virgil is actually 28 years old, while Magnus is 154? Non-followers also have unique ages, e.g. Edward Teach is 32. But unfortunately, the developers decided that the system is too complex or unneeded and disabled it at the last minute (the demo still had it).

Anyway, should I put it back in the UAP or should this change go to the Extra Pack?

I vote Extra Pack, because after all the developers DID disable it, even if it worked.
Well, the developers did many strange things in the final period of the development, e.g. they added sprite mirroring, without any means to disable it, thus butchering around 40% of animations.

Ages add a lot to characters, in my opinion. The game now shows that Torian Kel is 1000 y.o., Gilbert Bates is 80, even such minor characters as Richard Leeks have unique ages (he's 31) There may be a few incorrect ones, i.e. I've found that Swyft is 330 so far, but just like with all stats in such a complex RPG there may be mistakes with some NPCs.

The extra pack needs to be bulked up a bit more. I say add it there. Besides, the age thing isn't really a bug persay...

... adding it in the UAP wouldn't make much difference though, because I'll bet everyone has both the UAP and Extra pack. ;)

Drog, Just to clarify, I do think that ages are nice to have. And I like all the stuff you've restored. When I finally start Arcanum again (to finish it this time) I'll be definitely using the Extra Pack as well.

I say Extra Pack. I can see it being weird that from the get-go you know someone's age. Maybe they were planning that age only shows once you know a character better.
The age is displayed the same way as with PCs - in the character editor. So you have to have an NPC in your party or use Read Aura spell to see the age.

I vote UAP. I think the Extra Pack should be used for incomplete features, where part of it is missing and has to be made up.

I was going to suggest the Extra pack, but if you can only see it in the character editor, then I'd go with the UAP. That is, unless there seem to be a lot of characters with bad ages (441 year old humans and such).

What does this have to do with the change? PCs always had the age stat and NPCs' age was removed in the last few months of the development. Or do you propose removing age from PCs as well?

It is noticeable that characters' displayed ages never change even though the typical playthrough spans years of gametime. I thought of that too. But if age was to go up as the calendar progressed I think that would clearly be something for the extra pack-- a pretty silly little something IMO. It's not a roguelike where you can die of old age. I say Drog need not worry about it. Ages are just a bit of color, like the portraits.
