Hey everyone, I was just working on some sprites for my game Himeko Sutori (it's over in the weeaboo forum if you want to find it). And I have to say I was kind of proud of myself for the few latest sprite sheets I was working on. I went back to look at some of my older sprites to compare...

I think you can see the difference, but let me point a few things out: In late 2014 I was working from a sprite tutorial that was probably meant for big sprites like in a fighting game and really wasn't meant for low-res RPG sprites. The technique I had learned left me with the template peeking through at the edges, muddled colors, and big boring blocks of unbroken color. And it also took way longer than it needed to.

Now at the end of 2016 I'm working on a couple of sprite sheets that I think are a big improvement. These guys are sporting the paladin and ranger armor, with a couple of layers turned on or off to show what the different armor tiers will look like. These sprites show what I've learned about palette selection, lighting, texture, and a bunch of other little tricks.

So that's what I wanted to show. I'm not saying these are the pinnacle of human achievement in video game art, but it's a lot better than the stuff I used to produce. I wanted to brag a little bit, but mostly I wanted to to show everyone the progress that you can make when you keep practicing.
