Finally watched it... new voice actor is alright, if it's a reboot I might even prefer that to keep the originals separate.

It's weird this is a reboot but with Deus Ex they went the opposite way and had a ton of canon and fan service. I mean the first speaking role in Human Revolution is Bob Page for god's sake.

If Stephen Russell turned them down because the game will most probably be crap then he did the right thing. :smug:

Keep in mind that this is only a trailer. Square Enix may be scrambling right now to secure Russell as part of their bi-polar marketing campaign for the game.

they did that with hitman after all. David bateson was not hired for hitman absolution, but after so many complaints, Square-enix eventually hired him.

There was another game that had a temp voice in the trailer too... maybe one of the Splinter Cells before the new one where they actually did change it.

For a teaser trailer that wasn't a bad one. Shows some environments, some of Garrett's tools, him thieving, and a daring escape. I don't think it's shitty for the type of game they seem to be making.

The second game also suffered from a weaker story, and female guards diluted the atmosphere of the first somewhat by introducing a pointless anachronism (i'm also not sure why Viktoria was suddenly all good and heroic where as she was a complete evil bitch in the first game).

Anachronism... in a fantasy world :hmmm:

Ho fuck off with that "its fantasy everything goes trololo" shit. The setting of the original game was so consistent precisely because it captured its medieval atmosphere perfectly, fantasy elements or not. And apparently, i'm not the only one here, before anybody blurts out some shit abut my customary sexism:

But Thief 2 didn't have a medieval atmosphere.

The female Mechanists and members of the Watch actually fit the game's theme of a modernizing/reforming city. Allowing females to join was one of Karras' Protestant Reformation-like reforms to the old Hammerite Order. And of course Truart's Watch was organized like a 20th century police force.

Ah, so they deliberately made the female NPCs feel shoe-horned in, as a commentary on affirmative action :obviously:.

Apparently the new trailer shows Garrett using grenades? In other words they're not even disguising the fact that they're blatantly copying Dishonored?

Yeah, but those were merely for escaping enemies, not for killing them. I haven't watched the trailer yet because my internet's been a little fucked since Friday, but I understood it that the grenades in the trailer are of the killing kind? So are they just flash bombs then?

The trailer doesn't show the effect of the grenade.

Could be either, I suppose; the trailer is full of edgy fast cuts.

To its detriment, for sure.

What? Karras' and Truart's reforms of their respective organizations are an important element of the game's back story.

All right, bad memory from my part (has been almost a decade since i last played the game). All that means though is that it was the developers who tried to rationalize it. They wanted to include PCism into the game, so they changed the setting accordingly, which is even worst.

??? Where did I say that?

What other type of "reform" would it be?

Of course, considering all this, it wouldn't make sense for Mosely to conspire against Truart/Karras since her position in the watch was the result of their "reform", unless of course they had to have the female lieutenant be the one who was loyal to duty and wanted to fight corruption, because as we all know women are always pure and better than men at everything. More PCism. :troll:

I actually don't agree with this.

I don't care what originally inspired a change to a setting as long as the result is coherent. If somebody at LGS actually went "I want to have female guards because FEMINISM", but they managed to pull it off in a non-ridiculous fashion, then kudos to them. It's not my place to judge their original motivations, only the final result.

With a well placed flash bomb you could knock out a room full of guards, so it was already a bit too powerful to begin with. Now lets make it so you can even kill people with it, what could go wrong.

The final result being that the new setting was inferior to the original. That it was consistent with itself is only owning to the fact the devs weren't retards, hence why both games were masterpieces in the final analysis.

Frogbeast Eggs would like a word with you.

Also, mines = Delayed Blast Grenades. Thief 1 had 2 of them, Thief 2 upped it to 3, and added Frogbeast Eggs.

So Garret turning into emo-ninja is pretty much confirmed. I kinda enjoyed DX:HR but I have zero hope for this one.
Apart from the awesome gameplay, Thief was also one of the few games that were aesthetically absolutely pleasing. From the magical and eerie yet toned down and low-profile setting, over the cutscenes and the simple but atmospheric mission briefings to the music and sound design and Russel's perfect delivery of Garret's lines. Thief 1 and 2 made a lasting impression on me when it comes to things like style and atmosphere.

The hacks behind the new installment couldn't recreate this if their lives depended on it. It's pretty easy to design a halfway decent dystopian-conspiracy-theory-day-after-tommorow-sci-fi world, that's why DX:HR kinda worked. But there's no way in hell they could live up to the magic created by Looking Glass, and the trailer shows it.

Of course, Thiaf's gameplay will suck hard too, but don't get me even started about it.
