- He then uses Focus to look at the wall Eastwick is examining
- Focus shows a mysterious symbol written on the wall in blue energy
- Symbol corresponds to one of the runes written on the medallion
- Garrett turns a band of the medallion to line up that rune with an arrow, but the medallion then begins to glow with a similar blue energy
- Four adjacent rooms show four more symbols to line up
- After the last symbol is in place, the medallion whirls and spins

Using focus is not mandatory! Oh except when we force you to use it - fuck you!

- Garrett has been away from his hometown for a long time
- When he returns to City, he sees “a city of melting prosperity”
- Iron-fisted Baron now rules the city
- Baron crushes City’s citizens through militarized watch
- Good fortune only for the elite
- Garrett views the political chaos as a chance to get rich

Another sign it's likely not going to be a sequel (and if, it wouldn't make sense, imho).
After Thief 3, it was pretty much established that Garrett had gone back to the Keepers, possibly as their leader.
Why should he suddenly care about getting rich again.
This negates the entire development of Garretts character in T1-3.

Would it be so bad to come up with a new character for their "reboot"?

- Before Garrett can crack the lock, Xiao Xiao enters
- Xiao Xiao leaves to deal with a situation with one of his girls
- Garrett opens the chest and takes out a jewel-encrusted heirloom
- Garrett can’t leave the room since Xiao Xiao is just outside the door talking with the girl

Totally not scripted, nope

- Guards circle Garrett, who retreats into the opium fog and uses his bow to fire an arrow at a statue hanging above a doorframe
- Statue falls and crushes two guards
- Another guard pins Garrett against a wall
- To buy time, Garrett enters Focus mode
- Garrett grabs the guard’s arm, jerks it back behind his soldier, eventually falls against the stone floor
- Garrett breaks free from the final guards, grapples onto a nearby vent, and rapples down into the depths of City’s sewers

- Garrett isn’t a fighter

Part of me thinks "well it was tolerable in Human Revolution" and then part of me thinks "man Thief is such a different game."
I'd say Human Revolution got away with that stuff because Invisible War already happened, and although Deus Ex is my favorite game by far, I wouldn't say it's as consistent a masterpiece as The Dark Project or The Metal Age are. To me, the Thief games form probably the most perfect and most recognizable trilogy in the history of computer games, both gameplay-wise and artistically. Even Deadly Shadows was great despite its shortcomings and about as good you could realistically expect an Xbox game to be, a fitting end to a trilogy that should have been put to rest at that point. Making a "pretty good" game like Human Revolution or Dishonored just wouldn't cut it in this case.

It's not like takedowns had any redeeming qualities in Human Revolution either. You could tolerate them because the game did many other things right, but the takedowns pretty much ruined the entire stealth aspect of the game for me, with some help from the XP mechanics.

I don't really mind takedowns *if* they are done Dishonored style - first person only (if the game is first person, not necessary in mixed perspective games like TES, though unnecessary perspective switching should still be avoided) and with possibility of being interrupted by NPCs (rather than them standing there staring, in freeze-frame mode) as well as ability to disengage from takedown if it's anything but instantaneous and you notice that shit's going wrong.
So basically, just like the blackjack in Thief except that it still takes control away from the player? The only real gameplay difference I could think of would be the unpredictability of takedowns ("will it take one or five seconds to take this guy down?") but I'd rather just have AI guards that would occasionally look over their shoulder.

“Eidos-Montreal compares game development to a high-speed train collision between art and technology.”

Judging by the gameplay mechanics section it will be a sucess trainwreck like TR reboot.

- Use Focus while pickpocketing to slow time and swipe up to three times as many items from others

A quick cash-grab, one could say.

- Navigation beacon shows players where to go
- Dev. team wants players to explore environments as they see fit
Exploring as i see fit would be improved by there not being a beacon telling me where to go next.
- Fingerprints system: gives you hints on which drawers are best to look in
- Every drawer is accessible
What's the point of these two when every OCD gamer will search through every drawer anyway?
- Claw: grapple attaches to certain points
How certain? Is it "you can only shoot rope arrows at wooden surfaces" certain or "where programmers put it" certain?
- Garrett isn’t a fighter
Thank yooouuuuuuu, there is still hope.
- Fighting against four or more guards in combat won’t go well
Four or more? I don't think the word fighter means what you think it means.

Overall i think that we will see the same thing as Dishonored, the first level will have more work put into it than later ones for preview/marketing purposes, so all this "guards know the level hiding places" will mysteriously disappear in later levels.

It doesn't take control away if you can disengage at will (though possibly with negative consequences). It's just a different animation that plays in specific circumstances.

And if freeze-frame doesn't occur, the devs have to balance the awesome factor with usefulness of takedowns, because the more awesome they are, the longer they take and the longer they take the less opportunity windows exist and the less margin of error.

The only real gameplay difference I could think of would be the unpredictability of takedowns ("will it take one or five seconds to take this guy down?") but I'd rather just have AI guards that would occasionally look over their shoulder.
You can have both and having to have contingency plans for guards refusing to cooperate in being knocked out, or having to factor the risk of attempted KO, with the risk of having this person active and patrolling would definitely add to the game.

Game Informer has a massive article about the newest Thief game in its latest issue. The next-gen title was revealed for the PlayStation 4, PC, and other next-gen platforms today.

:hmmm:

Also, good work Eidos Montreal. You just have to put a tranny in a Thief game, and what is this person? The owner of a whorehouse. Talk about inclusion. Is the black guy going to be a grizzled prizefighter or jazz musician?

With a stereotypical silly asian name, no less.

How Controversial (TM)!

:salute:

This.

A trained guard IS a fighter, taking on four of them should be suicidal even for a fighter, unless, he's fucking Kronar. Being a fighter should mean taking on one well trained guard on even terms, or wiping a floor with one poorly trained if you don't get careless.

And since Garret isn't a fighter, taking on even one guard should most of the time end badly. One. One is not fucking four.

I think even in Blood openly taking on three cultists on Extra Crispy difficulty is suicidal.
Garrett surviving an encounter with three guards means he's a fucking Robocop, not a thief. I don't remember being able to survive a head on fight in the first Thief on the highest difficulty. Then again, maybe I'm nitpicking.

I weep for looking glass. rip thief

but really, it's ironic exactly how far decline has come. i remember people freaking out when thief 3 came out because of the overtly visible scrubbing (highlight) effect, which was distracting from the game's atmosphere.

from that to quest compass and super rambo mode, press A for awesome in less than 10 years, pretty impressive.

Its a cliche, but cliches are realistic. What would you expect, a pure virgin tranny and a SWPL black? Deal with it :smug:

I just imagined modern consoletard attempting to tackle Blood on Well Done (let alone Extra Crispy).

I just don't think I'll do anything productive today...
