At this rate they just might pass Microsoft's set record on 180 degree policy/design changes by the release.

At least now they're using the source material and adding supernatural/Mechanist stuff.

Guess you mean the statues, books and banners and symbols that refer to such stuff. Rest assured, they have no backstory in the setting of thiaf.

Thiaf is a game that is so distant of the originals, yet it relies on visual backstory of old games related only in name. That book with mechanist gear is in thiaf just reminding you you're playing a thief game. I'm 100% sure the game won't give any reason, or backstory for why it has statues with keys, books with gears, banners with hammers. It's there because it's cool...

As soon as I and a few others on the official forums saw the E3 special treatment of the mods and oddly Ashpolt, and read his posts from E3 that rang of an almost PR shill tone, we all knew something was wrong at that point. He still claimed afterwards that he was impartial in the whole thing and would be vocal on the game did wrong. But in the end he was vocal on nothing he knew EM was going to change anyway. With all his posts saying how much it felt like Thief and how EM had nailed the core gameplay. He even pulled the timeless "I have played it, you have not" on Shralla (now the last vocal voice of reason) when he called him out on the fact that he cannot be impartial after posting pictures of himself having fun drinking beer with his EM dev friends at E3.

Ha. Well it's good to know somebody appreciates my occasional outburst at least. My participation on the forums, at least in a meaningful sense, has been less frequent as of late because it's just so frustrating. The moderators always have something to say about whatever dissents you have, and they're always outwardly in support of the decisions being made by the company. It's just not worth the argument in a lot of cases. The place has really fallen apart since Human Revolution came out. Whatever is making them money is making them money and fuck what anybody else thinks. I realize the dissenters are in the technical minority, but as with everything that doesn't make us wrong. They could sell just as many units of a much more interesting game with all the marketing they're putting behind it, and money they're wasting on CGI trailers. The entire experience on the forums is identical to the period leading up to the Human Revolution release, except that now there are even more "new fans" who are essentially just drowning out the dissenters. Like I said, it's not worth the argument in most cases.

Is the "protege" girl supposed to be the kid from the ending of Thief 3? Because you just know she is going to be the romance option. And that would mean Garrett has been fucking the kid from the ending of Thief 3. Eww.
No no no no. There shouldn't be any connections between the original trilogy and this blasphemy. This is a reboot, nobody should connect the two.
It can't be completely coincidental though.

They shouldnt have added the deaders

The game looks great and will probably be great. I especially like the body awareness. And what are you all on about with this Dishonored? Maybe you should first familiarize yourself with some history, Thiefs were first, the motifs of plague, tyranny and a city rotten to the core + supernatural elements were already in previous parts of the series, even the Dishonored devs admitted they were inspired by Thief. Don't be ridiculous

This Dishonored 2 looks great :)

No, it's just that you never played previous Thiefs and you have no idea what you are talking about. You played Dishonored and it's the only series that you know that uses this style. And Dishonored devs were copying Thief, which had hiding in shadows, plagues, etc, so you only compare those because it's the only one you know.

I don't give a shit if it'll be another "clone" of Dishonored, Deus Ex, Assassin, Hitman or a true Thief...i know one thing - i wanna play this !

Cool. I thought ghouls wouldn't make a comeback in this part. Why don't developers ever try to put some nice elements into such games, like gnomes? Thief would surely be much better with gnomes. Those porcelain, talking ones you find in houses, sth like in Fable 3 or an irritating version of Dishonored Delilah statues. In any case, I'm happy that it's still viable and rewarded to lurk without touching enemies in any way.

The fact of the matter is that it's exactly their vision, just like Dishonored was a modern vision of Thief, but with a focus on elimination rather than thievery. The upcoming Thief is a Thief for modern times and still retains the spirit of the original. According to you, it would be better to just put new graphix into Metal Age and another story, just as Infinity Ward does it with Call of Duty? Also, how the hell is this an action game to you, if sneaking is the most prominent, and this sneaking is rewarded?

Thief will be vastly different from Dishonored, you are comparing 2 stealth games (if you can even call Dishonored like that) with vastly different difficulty levels. You won't be required to fight here, but to sneak and steal. A return to the locations from previous titles.

Just that making a game for the modern times equals publishing crap for idiots.
Thief unites idiots and hardcores. Have you seen any difficulty configurations so far? Not to mention the success of Dark Souls contradicts your statement

Its good to have you here. As you were the only voice of reason and integrity on those forums in the end. And one I respected.

I left for pretty much the same reasons you bring up. To many arguments that would never change anything no matter how well written or constructive they were. Only to have them taken by someone like Vikotria bit by bit, piece by piece until it becomes an argument over the meaning and placement of words rather then something that had meaning. It all just seemed very futile in the end.

That and heresy being allowed to say anything he wanted as long as he remained pro Thief pro EM. Not that it saved him in the end. But that end came way to late for me to have any faith in the moderation and rules.

Indeed. Very real freedom to say what you really feel about someone and something without fear of edits, infractions and kneejerk white knights.

zwanzig_zwoelf Stop trying to troll your fellow man :rpgcodex:

how goes the Thiaf forums anyway ? Managed to get into Viktoria's good books yet ?

And the mechanical objects in the trailer.

The Thief series was never big on world detail or setting history. The original Thief was one of the first, proper 'modern'3D games. It took advantage of Voodoo cards, the first ever 3D graphics cards and could only be played on one of those new fangled 'pentiums' that everyone was raving about. Not only that, but something that was considered revolutionary at the time, like nearly everything about the original game, was that if you overheard guards having conversations, no two conversations in the game would ever be alike. This held true in the first level of the game, but not really later on, as hardly anyone ever spoke to each other in the game.

Anyhow, coming back to lore and history, since this was the first 3d accelerated game looking glass was all about 'show don't tell'. So you had to kind of figure out for yourself the shit about the mechanists and the hammer guards, etc.

To be honest I loathed the supernatural shit in Thief and Thief 2. I would have been much more content had Garett just focused on being a Thief, with no mysterious overarching bullshit about Watchers/Keepers/Mechanists/zombie alligators.
