Isn't the whole point of Thief being a, you know, THIEF? Shooting dudes in the face does not seem like the smartest thing you can do unless you can dispose of the body. Unless of course the missing guard would be noticed and shit would start to go down.

This sort of reminds me of the Commandos series: the first few games were hard as fuck sneaking games, while the more recent ones became third-person shooters.

Instead of annoying smoke vision, Eidos should have developed some sort of device that you attach to your scrotum. Depending on gameplay situations (such as: sneaking, peeking, taking damage), different strengths of squeeze are applied.

I'm no part of the industry so I wouldn't know how to properly squeeze your balls as you play, but I'm confident big developers, such as Eidos, could do it right.

But... that takes time! I'm 30, and I have, like, X% of my life behind my shoulders! I'd rather pay 2 bux and enjoy shit at once than pay nothing and waste hours on modding! I know I am a hardcore gamer, I beat Angry Birds, Call of Duty and Mass Effect, but you need to accept convenience someday.
