Verdammt, I finished Might and Magic 3 today which got me craving for more M&M, but at the same time, this thread made me hungry for more wiz.

Now I'm facing a dilemma: should I play MM2 or MM6 or start an epic Wiz 6-8 playthrough with the same party.

HELP ME CODEX

As I said, it is a matter of preference. On the other hand a godlike party of 4 hybrids with max vit,piety,str,dex is also quite satisfying to play.

I would rather run around killing random shit for XP
Good luck trying to get XP for that with a party consisting of 8 characters. This will devolve into a boring grind quickly.

I can import a party form wizardry 7 into 8??? How far back does this go?

* So wait... 6-7-8 is the World of Xeen trilogy? I thought that was 5-6-7... crap I want to start with 6 now. I'm going to abandon my playthrough in 8. I obviously don't know much about Wizardry.

World of Xeen is Might and Magic. And it's only 2 games: 4 and 5.

6 7 8 is the Cosmic Forge trilogy. You can start in 6, import to 7, then import to 8, all the way through.

Alright, managed to finish Wizardry8 for the first time, after several tries, thanks to Flamestryke's mod containing items with lots of +resists that made Bayjin less of a chore to complete.

Quite a nice ending, I think - what was Bela supposed to be, though? A servant of the Cosmic Lords?

Replayed the final fight 3 times to see all endings. Would they have been any different if I'd bothered to rescue Drazic and Rodan from the Rapax Away Camp?

Amazing game all in all, highly recommended.

As soon as I find a good download I'm going get started but he search doesn't go well.

Yeah last time I played I had to...... search quite a bit to find it.

And find the DOS version of Wiz 7. Wiz 7 gold is for faggots (And text is fucked up on it, using a modern OS).

@ Coldcrow: Yeah, it would probably take quite some time, but on the other hand, grinding is usually not needed. You will most likely end up at around lvl. 23-25 (depending on the class) and that's more than enough.
tl;dr: I'd agree with you that it's ultimately a matter of personal preference.

@ Topher: You can download both 6 and 7 at Abandonia or many other Abandonware sites, just like all the other earlier Wizardry parts.

@ CrimHead: Most likely. Wiz 8 is perhaps the easiest game of the series to start with, since it's fairly easy to understand and play. The older games have sometimes weird gameplay elements (the horrible spell names in the first games, for example) and a much bigger random element in character creation. Wizardry 8 has absolutely no randomness in this regard, in fact.

Well, actually you can skip the bloddy thing. since Wiz8 directly follows the storyline of Wiz7, there are actually 4 different starting points to the game, equal to the possible endings of Wiz7.

run the actual dscheat file in dosbox and edit the save for importing. You can change any characters' stats, spells, race, sex and class as well as their items. Codex bonus: If you use any number when changing their gender other than 0 (male) and 1 (female) your character becomes a tranny (labeled "IT") when you import. No joke. I did this by accident once, but never played through to see what, if anything, it does. Once you load the 7-8 screen under new game in 8 you can change their names to whatever you want them to be.

And if you want to know what item code an item has for importing purposes you can just look it up under the cosmic forge editor which can also be downloaded at the first link. I use it to modify a few of the item inventory lists for merchants so that I can actually buy a decent amount of throwing daggers and shurikens for my monks, ninjas and thieves.

Wiz8 is the only one I find myself replaying every now and then. Perhaps I should expand this to 6-7-8 one of these days, haven't played 6 and 7 in ages.

I never got into the series because the scifi stuff and animal farm npcs put me off, but so far Wiz8 has been good fun.

Bayjin atm is brutal for my lvl15 party. Low stamina all around and lack of a second mage came to bite me in the ass. On the plus side, the monk finally caught up and is now one of the main dmg dealers with his 6 attacks per round. :D

haven't played 6, but in 7 there are all of wiz8 classes, except gadgeteer. They just have horrid stat requirements, so might not see many of them (especially hybrids)

Can't understand why everyone is so obsessed about hybrids/physical damage dealers in wiz8. For the xth time: try a party of spellcasters with max piety/int and watch like 98% of the opposition shrivel like a gnat in a fire. For the peak you can dual class them to their hybrids IF you want better AC or some physical damage.
But the lvl 7 spells coupled with maximum spellpoints are enough usually.

playthrough from 6 to 8 surely provides ridiculously rich dungeon crawl-y experience, it´s definitely worth an attempt.

6 is the only one i can see as somewhat skippable, being the most dated one and with only few ties to the overall story.
7 definitely deserves some serious shake though. when speaking about dungeon crawlers, this game just has it all and i don´t think there´s another game equivalent to it.

oldgames.sk have quite neat Wizardry 7 package downloadable from here:

includes DosBox preset and patch which makes getting higher bonuses during chargen easier and recovery during rest much faster (a substantial time saver).
soundblaster effects mostly don´t work, changing them to pc speaker is for the best.

There are the other classes, but they have some substantial attribute requirements. Either start with a basic class and change later on, or reroll your attributes till you get the desired results. I'd recommend the class-changing strategy, which is anyway very important in Wiz 7.

Not so much a "strategy" as it is an exploit/cheat.

Also wanted to note that MadGod's Cosmic Forge editor works for W6, 7 and 8 and even if you are not a modder there are included patches/fixes you can apply from the editor itself.
