recently been having the urge to come back to wiz8, after losing a party to a windows reinstall years ago. Glad to see there was a code dive that finally delivered formulas for attack rating, power strike, etc. I need to start again and this time I won't forget to bring a bard. (oh um, I tend to disable my chosen npc recruits' pickiness about which areas they go to via cosmic forge. it's a weakness of mine but I must carry my mascot/pet Madras everywhere no matter what.)

I know I want a (non-fairy) ninja too, question is which way to build her? Daggers, staves, or throwing?
I had the most luck with making my Ninjas Throwing experts.

Nah, staves ninjas is the way for the extended range, plus, some staves are quite powerful.

Full extended range party wastes less hits, Mook Fighter with the giant sword, Valk with a polearm and a ninja with some stick.

If you go for a close range party, then knife rogue, sword fighter and samurai or monk is the way.

Well, I ended up with both - naturally a staff ninja with originally two fairy sticks, but is now using winterwand+static (bought corpus after editing the don's merchant tables but I use it sparingly so far, only when fights get big), and a knife ninja with doublestrike daggers (for faster training). Both use doubleshot slings to keep throwing trained.

Been distracted by my rogue-1 to bishop party though. That puts the wizard into wizardry.

WTF, Wiz8 has stopped working for me suddenly on my win7 laptop that I use for classic gaming. Enhanced version just crashes instantly, while running original either ctds instantly (steam version) or gives "insert proper CD and restart" prompt (gog version). Never saw anything like that on any machine I played Wiz8 on and did not mess with the laptop in any way. Searching the net gives nothing. Anyone had similar problems perhaps?

Have you tried all the different rendering options? Messing around with those might help you pinpoint your issue. Not sure I've had your exact problem, but I've noticed that Wiz 8 has a tendency to stop working for absolutely no reason on newer computers every once in a while.

I know about tinkering with the 3d setup. I think it's only an issue starting with win8 and later, but I tried it anyway - no success. This laptop is old af and I was playing Wiz8 for dozens of hours on it with 0 issues. All the other oldies run like they should, it's super weird.

Still low level near Arnika?

Because you might want to check out Bela if you have the coin (appx 25-26k). Dread Spear is a straight up upgrade.

Alternatively, a dash to Marten's Bluff, (either through mine tunnels or combat dash skipping past the guards) grabbing Marten's Idol, and going to Trynton with it will unlock a Mystic Spear to you, which is weaker but cheaper. Both have a +2 initiative and +2 to-hit modifier which rock.

Insert Title Here Pathfinder: Wrath
I'm not a dasher.

This mod has plenty of good Spears already, tho not all available to Monk.

Managed to beat Wizardry IV, and became a God in the ending. I can't imagine the "true ending" being any better than that.

Drew out these maps:

Impressive. Did you beat it without looking at any solution?
I lasted until the final boss, but got frustrated enough that I started using the walkthrough. I also knew beforehand that the password solution was taken from the first game.

Edit: I really like how Hawkwind is drinking tea and doing his own thing while dragons, demons, and Werdna are all using their strongest attacks against him. "Oh, you're still here?"

Since I'm a) curious and b) a map drawing asshole myself, I've got to ask : do you really need to write the map legends ? They're your own shit FFS ! You should know what those letters stand for. Admit it... you did it to show off !
It's been a while since I started playing so I don't know the exact answer (Completeness?). I do like how they turned out, especially the fifth map, and the few times I've seen maps be posted online, the reception has been positive, so I was aware partway through that I'd eventually post them online. It also shows that I played the game all the way through.

Wrote these impressions while playing:

I've been playing Wizardry IV, my second attempt after getting frustrated by losing to the "pyramid" boss. He's the last boss before climbing the ladder and finishing the first floor. The game is a lot of fun, especially with the learning curve, where even on the first level you need to discover three things in a row. Firstly, that you can save anywhere with 8 slots, that you can kill off all the named enemies and they stay dead. Secondly, that they only stay dead as long as you are fighting them in the same playing session, so reloading saves brings them all back to life and can make progressing impossible. Thirdly, that the coins are by far the best monster summon on level 1. First room ended up being a breeze.

The fixed level-progression works well for mapping out the floors, since then you can just focus on drawing maps and writing hints without worrying about experience-points or your items. Since you don't lose as much, aside from equipable items.

(Floor 9)
The game also has more charming things in it than the previous games, like that there are little dogs that are much stronger than all the serious enemies, and are even an optional fight (as far as I know). So far is rough sailing, and I'm sure the game will turn into hell on earth very soon though, looking at all the people who either dropped or avoided it after hearing spoilers (which I have avoided).

(Floor 6)
Played up to Floor 6 now, I really love this game. I got stuck at the ziggurat level because I forgot that you need to recast the light spell, but while stuck I found four stones and could get a powerful sword from the temple God. This game really scratches my blobber itch well, while Bard's Tale was annoying me by the weird way you turn and view the world, as well as that the game makes you go through an annoying rigmarole just to find the inn. You will die a lot, but if you keep at it, the level will be slowly mapped out. The map design is a lot better than the last blobber I played, Etrian Odyssey. The monster lineup has finally reached the point where they are all cool and strong, like werewolves and ninjas, although I'm sure whatever one casts offensive spells will be most useful.

(Floor 4)
Reached as high as Floor 4, and Werdna reached level 7. To my disappointment, you can't just Malor to teleport to the end of the game, or anywhere. Now it's at the point where mapping is exceedingly difficult, because the walls can shift after you rest. West Wind Sword kicks ass, and let me kill that boss at the end of Floor 6 that casts an instakill on his first turn, as well as random enemies. I love that there's a monster summon now of the Black Riders from LotR. It definitely is a very tough game, and filled to the brim with trial and error, but I personally find pre-Lucas Arts adventure games to be worse overall. It's ironic because they seem lamer because they don't involve fighting, and the modern successors are made to be as easy as possible.

(Floor 3)
On Cosmic Cube now, feeling the tension before starting. I got stuck on Floor 4, but managed to get around it by marking every floor I hadn't entered with a diagonal line, so I knew exactly what I covered and didn't. Figured out the first puzzle at least.

Thoughts on the Game:

Enjoyment factor: Starts out great, but then gets more tedious over time. Annoying being roadblocked by obscure puzzles/secrets or the level design.
Combat: Not as good as the earlier games, since you all you control is a single mage. Some variety early on, but once you reach Floor 6 and get Madalto, you just spam your strongest spells the rest of the game, and cross your fingers to survive.
Broader Gameplay: Navigating and mapping out the dungeon is really the main appeal of this game. It was an improvement on the early games because: it adds non-pointless teleporters, minefield levels, more complicated puzzles, triple-part levels, and levels where the walls shift around. That last one and some of the puzzles I could do without. Liked the touch that it lets you walk around the castle in the final level and fight the guards or talk to various adventurer groups in the inn. Figuring out the right monsters to summon is another interesting part.

Does anyone know how the class mods (hp progression, skill access) are made for wiz8? I know they patch the exe and it's hardcoded, but nothing beyond that

It's probably made with the cosmic forge editor.
I think I messed with equipment restrictions with it a long time ago.

For detailed answers, you should probably drop by the postcount forum.
