Doom 3 wanted to be what Half-Life 2 was, except they had no clue what the fuck they were doing. If not for the serviceable graphics and the Doom name it would be another forgettable corridor shooter lost to the sands of time.

How can they continue to slow these games down with weapon wheels, slow-mo, and kill animations, while claiming it is true to the spirit of the originals? I'll tell you how. Because most of these faggots were in diapers when the original Doom came out.

People made mods for that shit game?

Barely. The mod scene for Doom 3 is about as pathetic as Quake 4. You would figure someone would replicate the Doom formula by now.

Sidebar comment: Why the fuck did they ever get rid of the original Quake design? Was the Lovecraftian vibe too original so they had to go with cyborgs?

You talking about Quake 2? The story with that one is that it was going to be its own unique game but then they decided to rebrand it as a Quake sequel 'cause lol money. Ironically, the game felt like it was designed to be the complete opposite of Quake. I have a theory that the original Quake may have not have been entirely well received, because of how different the gemaplay felt compared to Doom. Everything was floaty and ethereal, where as Quake 2 was clunky and heavy. Personally, my only beef with Quake 2 is that it was too easy. Everything else was decent enough. Unlike, say, Doom 3, which was an irredeemable piece of shit. Lightning was neato and i liked the variety and quantity in texture detail, but that's the only positive i can think of. Great engine for a System Shock wannabe. But a shooter? Just, no.

That never made sense to me. The original Quake will always be superior at least by my criteria. I thought Quake 2 was great - at the time the graphics blew me away - but even then I knew I liked the original games premise better. I always wanted a sequel to the original Quake. Not only was the multiplayer badass, but the music, monsters and level design was top notch. I believe I used mouse/keyboard combo while some were still using just the keyboard. Ahh memories...

Cyborgs don't bring much to the table that Elder Gods don't do better. Interdimensional Shamblers curb stomp Strogg pussies all eternity long. I'm sure some might have felt Quake 1's story might be a bit similar to Doom's, but if that was the case Quake 2 wouldn't be much better.

Quake 1 aesthetics isn't the only issue. Gameplay may be a bit of an acquired taste compared to Doom but the challenge makes it great all the same. Quake 2 really needed to be harder.

Those are all redundant points because compared to this new shit Quake 2 is a timeless masterpiece.

Personally, my only beef with Quake 2 is that it was too easy.

So try The Reckoning, it's much harder than Q2 with old dudes pumped up (e.g. basic Stogg troops now can use laserguns and survive close-ranged shotgun shot, there're new HP-bloated Gladiators with Phalanx instead of Railgun etc.).

So with Snapmap you can't even make outdoor levels (like the one showcased at E3), only those narrow corridor things.

Not only that, but SnapMap’s capabilities are limited. Players won’t be able to create outdoor spaces with SnapMap and they won’t be able to create large open spaces like in the opening of the Doom demo. In short, SnapMap only does smaller interior spaces (similar to those MP maps that were showcased).

Shhh... careful, man. You don't want to wake up the beast.
You called?

Carmack.
Everything was floaty
Floaty is something Oblivion was. Quake 1 was way too dynamic to feel floaty. In terms of overall dynamics it felt a lot like Doom except with 3D movement, with faster projectiles and more precision required. Q2 was indeed clunky, though.
Also, Q2 was bland and homogeneous. It also didn't make use of many of its interesting gameplay features in SP - it's a game with 3 different armor types differing in what they can absorb, how about giving enemies actual armor? Hello? You have cyborgs called "tanks" in, FFS!

Ludicrously low difficulty was not its only problem.
basic Stogg troops now can use laserguns and survive close-ranged shotgun shot
So it removes the only remaining reason to ever use the normal SG?

Carmack can be blamed for being a bit of an ass but he can't be blamed for the design, since he didn't do any of it.

This can be seen even in good shooters - in UT for example, every fight was a duel, even a 8x8 fight was a series of miniduels between people.
Hello? An MP shooter.

Symmetrical fight against other players or bots standing in for them.
You can't just mow down crowds one man army style in symmetrical combat because every single opponent will be just as much of a one man army as you.

seems utterly boring. The visuals are genetic, the enemy design is disappointing, the action is not nearly frantic or interesting enough.... I was expecting hordes of monster or at least something really tense, instead it's just navigating a straight line with out of place staircases and crates (yawn) giving the "illusion" of the level not being a straight line (actually it just accentuates that fact).

Seriously what's up with the enemy design?

Also they didn't go over the top, they were timid, they could have had doomguy doing double jumps and takedowns thanks to muscles and stimpacks instead it's a lame ass halo suit... yawn...

I wouldn't mind the takedowns if they meant instant death while fighting an horde (so you would use it as a neat way to save ammo when only one enemy is left), but I think hordes in doom 4 will mean taking on two imps at once (fucking exciting)
