The game will begin when eleven users join.

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, and wind rattled the windows of the codex manor (for this is where our story lies). Only the flickering flame of a small gas lamp illuminated the dining room, casting shadows of the twelve codexers gathered upon the high vaulted ceiling.

Mr. Pink cleared his throat. His massive underbite quivered as he read from the telegram in his hand.

"We regret to inform you that the master of the manor, Baron Dark Underlord has been murdered. He was found in his favorite chair in his vacation home, having been brutally bludgeoned to death with a Witcher 3 Collectors Edition plaster bust. We have reason to believe that the two responsible for this heinous act are residents of this household. Please be very careful."

RULES:

To participate, post in this thread with your intention to participate. You will be expected to be active at least once a day for less than seven days, or you might end up being unable to defend yourself if accused.

Roles will be assigned via PM when the game begins.

Two posters will be given the role of "killers". Their goal is to eliminate the rest of the innocents. The innocent posters win if they kill the two killers.

Every night, the killers will decide who they will kill each. the killers will PM me with who is to die and what method. the same method cannot be used twice.

When dawn breaks, the dead shall be announced and all living players can accuse others of being a killer. The accused have an opportunity to defend themselves and convince others of their innocence.

Everyone is to vote publicly in the thread on the fate of the accused. If a majority (50%) of the living players feel a player is guilty, he is lynched and put to death.

One innocent poster will be discretely given the role of "priest". He can protect one person every night, granting them immunity from being killed

One innocent poster will be discretely given the role of "detective". He can check the role of a single person every night.

Obviously, the dead cannot vote, and should refrain from communicating anything game related from beyond the grave.

[Roles]
Two killers
Seven innocents
One priest
One detective

Mafia game on the Codex? It doesn't generally work in forum format, but I'll bite.

I am kind of interested why a method of killing needs to be listed. It doesn't look like it can affect anything, yet there is a rule about choosing a different one each time.

Can the players communicate between themselves via PM, or should all communication be done in a public format?

I've been in forum-run mafia and it works pretty well. People just have to not be dicks and PM each other creating a whole off-the-map conversation.

the method of killing should be elaborated upon because it makes the game slightly more interesting by offering more information other than 'the guy died'. it can be anything mundane, or extremely outlandish; anything really. the choosing a different one each time just prevents people from being boring and saying "he got stabbed" every time.

I can't stop players from communicating between themselves but it is a rather tryhard thing to do. If you get PMs from other participants, please post them in the thread for all to see.

A clever group will also be able to use this requirement to try and corner the killers, or the killers throw off the group.

I have no idea what you mean.

The method of killing does not affect the game. If one was to write 7 different methods on a paper right now and just follow through, it's not different from stabbing the guy with the same method. It's not like the player will be pressured to come up with something new, given the timespan of the game, and there is no 'evidence' to speak of but what the killers say.

While it is indeed possible to loosen one's tongue when you are sitting face-to-face with them - or even when you are chatting someone up, - it does not really work on a forum. It becomes more of a flavor thing.

I thought that PMs could make this into a different game (as they could compensate for lack of visible reaction), but apparently they are frowned upon. :?

We'll see how it goes.

Yeah, I was thinking about something else, my bad. We'll see.

PMs make the game an impossible convolution. In a physical room, everybody has the same baseline of exposure to information: everybody's words and body language is there. With PMs the relative disparity quickly turns into a mess. Anyway, people will have to talk and say something, unless they want to be bandwagoned to death themselves.

Don't do PMs. Keep everything in this thread. It will be more fun to play and for everyone else to watch
