ABOUT THIS GAME

DEA-Steam_title_banner-aboutEN.png

The Dead Await is a deck-building open world survival RPG set in a zombie apocalypse. The world as we know it ended, torn apart by hordes of ravenous monsters. Humanity still clings on in the sea of blackened ruins, cold ashes, and man-eating creatures.

You're the leader of a caravan of survivalists whose goal is to figure out the truth behind the zombie apocalypse and, if possible, build the foundations for a new civilization! But be careful: Zombies might want to feast on your brains, but humans may very well prove the greatest obstacles during your long drive...

  • Explore a vast world torn apart by a zombie apocalypse, from derelict cities full of loot and zombies to new settlements founded by survivors with opportunity and backstabbing abound.
  • Gather food, water, fuel, and gear to survive the drive. Manage your resources to ensure everyone gets to the destination safely.
  • Manage your team's sanity! Manage the impact of trauma, long-term effects of injuries, and, of course, resource scarcity. Zombies might turn out to be the least of your problems...

  • Build the survivor you want using a robust attribute, skill, and perk system. Experiment with combinations and character builds, from a suave lockpicker to a mindless berserker and everything in-between.
  • Paired with the character system is sophisticated card-based combat. Build up your deck during your travels, taking a team of rag-tag survivors to veterans with incredibly rare cards at their disposal!
  • Gear matters: Give your survivors an edge with weapon and equipment mods - plus a good meal - and watch them conquer the wasteland!
  • Build your group of survivalists to work as a team in combat!

  • The caravan is at the heart of your journey to discover the truth. Upgrade it with workbenches, storage, and other features to turn it into a true mobile base.
  • Swap out vehicle components to modify the caravan's performance. Engine, suspension, tires, all affect how you traverse the world - and your chances of surviving!
  • Craft everything you need to survive, including the classic nail-mounted baseball bat. They don't make them like they used to, after all!
  • With what you find in the wild, cook meals to give yourself permanent bonuses or a quick fix before a fight!

It's had a prologue available for a while, main page doesn't do a good job of linking to it anymore:

Roadmap & Act II Progress
We've got some exciting news to share!

First, we want to celebrate this launch with you and thank each of you for your incredible support, patience, and all the bug reports you've shared so far. Your feedback means everything to us, and we're excited to hear even more of your thoughts and suggestions. Thank you for taking the time to review our game — it truly means the world to us as a small indie studio!

Now, let's move on to the Roadmap!

Update #1

We’re already hard at work reviewing all the bug reports, and we’re aiming to resolve the issues within just a few days. This upcoming update will focus on fixing urgent problems like crashes, critical bugs, and adding key quality-of-life improvements.

New Cards & Perks

Our first content update is set for release in November, and it’s packed with exciting additions! We’re introducing new attack cards for all existing weapon types, including rare, epic, and legendary attacks. Alongside these, we’re planning to more than double the current number of perks, adding even more depth to the game. While we won't include any new features for Act I, we may have a few surprises in store!

Act II Progress

Act II is set to be at least three times the size of Act I, and we're dedicated to delivering it with the quality you deserve. We’re currently around 40-50% through development, so the release is on the horizon!

In Act II, you’ll encounter new cube types, explore expansive locations, battle over 25 new enemies, and save up for tons of exciting new equipment. Plus, you'll get to dive into new features like arena, permanent underground base building, and much, much more!

We are ready to share quite a few things we've been working on:

aQPEY3Q.gif

You’ve already faced bandits and zombies, but a new threat awaits — an unpredictable group known as ‘psychos,’ or ‘clowns’ as the locals call them. These enemies are driven by a dark sense of irony, blending cynicism with a core of nihilism. And behind them all stands a mysterious leader, whose motives remain unknown.

You’ll also encounter a host of new, unique zombies and bandits along the way... each more fearless and ruthless than ever before.

NEW LOCATIONS! Each holding secrets waiting to be uncovered. As you explore, you’ll discover hidden truths buried within ruins, abandoned outposts, and more. Every corner offers the potential for discovery, from cryptic clues that piece together the origins of the apocalypse to unexpected twists in the story. Prepare for an immersive journey where every new location pulls you deeper into a world brimming with mysteries and untold stories.

We’ll keep you updated as we make progress! That’s all for now. Hopefully, this answers some of your questions.
Celebrate & Save During Launch
To celebrate the game's launch, The Dead Await will be 10% off until Oct 31st! Now is the perfect time to begin upgrading your caravan and improving your chances for survival.

I don't know what it is, the proportions or the stances or crude animations or what, but I don't like the paper doll - style characters in combat. Graphixs-whoring I know, but in the zombie genre I feel you need to set a mood and now I feel like I'm looking at early South Park or even some older kids show. Other screens have better style.

Cards & Perks Update is Here!
Exciting Updates in The Dead Await!

We’ve been hard at work creating new combat cards and character perks to provide even more options for varied and unique builds. In addition to fresh content, we’ve introduced several new features, including the combat auto-resolve option, which we covered in our previous devlog.

Finally, with numerous fixes and enhancements, The Dead Await is now more stable and polished than ever. We’re dedicated to delivering the best experience possible, and we can’t wait to hear more of your feedback!

New Combat Cards

GvRFllH.png

We've introduced rare, epic, and legendary attack cards for all weapon types! A total of 24 new combat cards have been added, offering even more variety and power. Now's the time to dive into the apocalypse and search for every Book of Wisdom you can find.

Good luck, and may your journey be victorious!

New Character Perks

5j3ewX7.png

We’ve added 16 new perks to enhance your gameplay! These new perks give you even more ways to customize your playstyle, making your weapon attacks deadlier, increasing your chances of eliminating negative status cards, turning attack misses into blocks, reducing the likelihood of being crippled, and much more...

With these additions, you’ll have even more strategic options to survive the apocalypse. Get ready to experiment with different combinations and find the perfect perks to suit your playstyle!

Combat Auto-resolve

lrK8pSG.gif

All it takes is one click, and the loot is yours!

While taking down zombies and bandits is always a blast (and who doesn’t love some sweet loot?), we know that once your group of survivors reaches higher levels, things can start to feel a bit repetitive as they breeze through enemies. That’s why this update is designed to shake things up...

Here’s how it works:

You’ll start with 5 auto-resolve points readily available, and you’ll earn a new point every day. Combat encounters that are well below your level will be marked as safe for auto-resolve, costing only a small amount of HP, ammo, and one auto-resolve point.

Enemies that are closer to your level will be marked as challenging and will require a bit more HP and resources to resolve.

However, if the enemy level is significantly higher than yours, or the encounter is tied to a contract or quest, auto-resolve will not be available.

Redesigned Enemy Levels

mbXHT3n.png

Previously, enemy levels were hidden until the combat encounter, and each enemy had its own individual level within the encounter. We’ve redesigned this system so that now the entire enemy group has a single combat level, calculated as the average of the individual enemy levels.

Enemy levels are now also displayed next to their icons, and you can toggle this feature on or off in the game options for a more customizable experience.

Dev. Console

You can now enable or disable the developer console directly from the game options. Pressing the [~] key will open the console, where you can view a list of available commands by typing /help.

Ci7Ap4n.gif

If you find yourself stuck due to a bug or simply want to bypass a tricky situation, the console gives you the flexibility to do so. However, be careful as incorrect commands could cause crashes. If you're experiencing any issues, please reach out to us on the Steam discussions or Discord, and we'd be happy to assist you!

New Details

YnCJca8.gif

We’ve also added new details to the world, including fresh blood splatter effects, spider webs, and other atmospheric touches that bring the environment to life. Keep an eye out for these new additions as you explore and survive the apocalypse!

& More

Maintaining your sanity is crucial for survival in the game. if your sanity reaches zero, it’s game over. To help you stay on top of your mental state, we’ve added additional warnings when your sanity starts to drop. You’ll now see a bright flash and receive a notification to ensure you don’t miss the warning.

ToD3nb6.gif

We've also added a new poll to help us see which new features you're most interested in. So, go ahead and vote for your favorite one!

Please keep in mind that The Dead Await is still in Early Access and we've only just began our journey together! We really hope to achieve much more with the help of our community

If we haven’t responded to your feedback yet, please bear with us a little longer. Thank you for your patience
