Ho boy, Lovecraftian horrors are invading medieval Norway/Russia/Mongolia and it's up to you to stop them serve as their physical manifestation as you sow death and carnage throughout the known world.

  • Manipulate different factions into fighting each other for the amusement of your eldritch master!
  • Corrupt towns and villages into breeding pits for unspeakable monstrosities!
  • Call upon the powers of your dark patron to create famines and other bullshit!
Previous features retained:

  • The player is a cultist, doing cultist shit
  • Permadeath: ON
  • Skill trees
  • Party building (each unit is a group instead of individual characters)
  • Game is balanced for a max party of five-six units
  • Grid-based battles
  • Base building
  • Overworld, Battle Brothers-esque gameplay
  • Towns, Fortresses, Farms, Cathedrals, etc that players can interact with, buy goods at, take missions from
  • Main quest line you don’t have to give a fuck about
  • Gameplay cribbed almost entirely from my other projects (which I'm still working on, because I LOVE the crunch. Also I'm not the main dev on this.)
  • It's free, because fuck you you're awesome
  • Tabletop/miniature porn
  • Actual porn
  • No anime (unless I get enough money, then it's a bonus feature)
  • Unfathomably gross shit, probably
  • Decline so fantastically hard it’s…. Incline?

That Which Rises is a dark fantasy RPG in which the player assumes the role of a cultist bent on awakening ancient, eldritch entities.

Imbued with a small measure of their chosen master’s horrific power, players seek to corrupt the nation of Dyavol through guile and treachery. Those that will not convert must be put to the sword.

Gameplay features:

  • A large, open-world map filled with villages, towns and cities
  • A large variety of recruitable units
  • Turn-based, grid battles
  • Complex strategic-level AI
  • Numerous factions that act independently of the player
  • Different methods of attacking, sabotaging or influencing your enemies
  • Very powerful spells… with a significant price to be paid
  • Adult content
Detailed Features:

On a very basic level, it's like Battle Brothers, but more content.

    • Settlements
      • A lot of interactivity. Beyond the basic Trade, Recruit, Mission, etc options, you can also attempt to corrupt, raid or conquer settlements.
      • Most major settlements will have a Leader, who can be charmed or assassinated.
      • Settlements can be conquered and player-controlled, with some limited management options.
    • Non-player forces
      • Beyond the basic bandits, caravans and faction mobs, there will be other non-player forces traveling in the world. Knightly orders will spring up to check your expansion, heroes will gather at taverns and go on quests, the Traveler's Guild will conduct rituals to counter your otherworldly influence.
    • Faction mechanics
      • There are a number of factions of differing sizes. From the Royal Court to the noble houses, mercenary companies and bandits.
      • Factions can be corrupted and eventually controlled by the player.
      • You can set factions against one another.
    • Player chargen
      • The player character is an Envoy of a nightmarish Primordial being.
      • Chargen consists of choosing background (starting bonuses and equipment), Skills, starting faction bonuses, and the Primordial you worship (basically your player class, different Primordials have different patron powers).
    • Player retinue
      • Your retinue is a small army that acts as your bodyguard, court and congregation. Comprised of human cultists and monstrous abominations, they will be your primary fighting force.
      • Instead of Hit Points being some nebulous indicator of health, in this game they indicate manpower, as you recruit units of fighting men/monsters instead of companions.
      • Units reduced to zero Hit Points are wiped out and permadead (You can save scum them back if you're a pleb).
      • If your character's unit (the Envoy's personal bodyguard) is wiped out, game over (go back to previous save, or just delete all your saves if you want to larp an ironman mode).
    • Skill trees
      • They exist.
    • Game length
      • Much shorter than my 40hr long rpgs. Designed to encourage multiple different runs with different Primordials and experimentation.
      • Each run will be about 5 hours, give or take?
    • Difficulty
      • Game is going to be hard as balls. Both in combat and on the overworld strategic layer.
      • An overarching AI acts as the most malicious DM you've ever had.
      • Actions you take will generate Notoriety. High enough Notoriety means that factions begin to notice you and your heretical ways.
      • The factions will declare Holy Wars on you, heroes will set out to banish your cthulhus, knightly orders will seek out and purge your hidden temple.
      • Some minor roguelike features that give you new skills over subsequent playthroughs. Optional.

Alternative game mode: Play as a knightly order

Stand against the encroaching darkness and purge the heretics from your motherland. Unlike the envoys of the Primordials, there is no inhuman force to empower you. If you should prevail against the might of the ancients, it will be by your strong sword arm and sheer will alone.

Prove that humanity deserves to live. Cast down the false gods.

---OUTDATED SHIT---

Let’s get this out of the way first: there’s no way in hell Games Workshop will ever okay a hardcore porn RPG of their setting, so this is a parody game. This means no intellectual property will be lifted directly from the 40k setting.

Don’t expect things to be called by their proper names here.

Anyways, this is really just a pre-Alpha placeholder post, so here are some FAST FACTS:

  • The player is a cultist, doing cultist shit
  • Permadeath: ON
  • Four classes, each with two subclasses (Traitor Guardsmen, Possessed, Sorcerer, Tec-Heretic)
  • Skill trees
  • Party building
  • Game is balanced for a max party of five
  • Grid-based battles
  • Base building
  • Overworld, Battle Brothers-esque gameplay
  • Habcenters, Factoriums, Farms, Cathedrals, etc that players can interact with, buy goods at, take missions from
  • Moddable weapons
  • Main quest line you don’t have to give a fuck about
  • Not a hive world
  • Gameplay cribbed almost entirely from my other project (which I'm still working on, because I LOVE the crunch. Also I have more help with this one.)
  • It's free, because fuck you...'re awesome
  • Horrible graphics except for:
  • Sex
  • Anime
  • Gross shit, probably
  • Decline so fantastically hard it’s…. Incline?
Discuss.

The art already looks better than whatever shit Pope Amole II had in Lovehammer 400k.
If you could spice it up by taking the parody elements a bit closer to home - like having SocJus (instead of chaos) that corrupts everything it touches - it would be incline indeed.

Can I play as the Imperium and genocide the filth?

NO YOU CORPSE WORSHIPPER.

I mean playing a Radical Inquisitor who doesnt hesitate to "consort" with demons to protect the Imperium of Male would be pretty good. Please consider doing a DLC, main protagonist could be Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhole.

I've anticipated that some people will inevitably want to be a rogue inquisitor, so that'll be one of the basic backgrounds. It's mostly for roleplaying, but it'll probably have some bonuses for dealing with Inquisitorial kill teams or whatever.

Also, Inquisitorial kill teams confirmed for the game, I guess.

Tyranicon I have but one suggestion: consider making your game as moddable as you can, so if it's good (and the concept sounds interesting indeed) then perhaps fans may do some graphical overhaul for it.

The engine I'm using is so outdated, overused and lacking in any meaningful encryption that it may as well be open source.

It's the same I'm using for my other game, it's a heavily modded RPGMakerMV.

Anyway, what is the actuall state of the project? Is there a release date?

Also: is the Imperium going to be the only enemy or is there going to be a cult on cult violence (ie if you are Slaanesh cult, how about fighting against Nurgle cultists)? How about some aliens (fighting Dark Eldar as Slaanesh cultist would be sweet).

It's pre-Alpha, but my dev cycle is pretty fast and I'm used to working on two projects at the same time, especially if they share a lot of resources. Game's free, so no point in waiting for full release. It will be out as soon as it has like an hour's worth of gameplay loop.

No promises, but I'm eyeing IG, Inquisition, SM chapters, rival cultists and the associated demons, Chaos Marines, Eldar, Ork and Tau. All is contingent on my time, funds needed to make the game, interest from players and me not getting hit by a bus. Astartes will be lore strength, so don't expect to see a lot of them.

Given that this is a porn-focused game, SocJus would better work as the Imperium. "Shame the Heterosexual! Cancel the Misogynist! Dogpile the Fun-having!"

Thinking about including player attributes, not sure yet. If they make it into the game, it will probably be Perception, Technology, Charisma, and Faith.

They'll probably help with certain missions and skill checks.

Hmmm... cant wait to meet some of those space nuns in the game.

As for the player attributes, I am always in favour of anything that makes the game more complex, especially on the non-combat side of things. If the skill checks would allow you to gain advantages or even avoid some fights, it would be great.

There's probably a fortune to be made with the right kind of porn RPG. I mean - look at the money they made with Skyrim. Throw in the right kind of fetishes (tastefully) and print money.

Honestly there is a fortune to be made in a 40K Battlebrothers clone too (obviously without any porn). Given that GW gave the licence to all sorts of shitty studios in the past, I wouldnt be surprised at all if they let a no-name one man dev to do a little game like that (after all they were OK with that DeathWatch game with cards that could have been a one man project too, given its qualities).

Me: runs kickstarter for kind-of-serious narrative-driven RPG, which releases to very good reviews, if somewhat buggy

Me: runs kickstarter for the exact same game but with porn.

Me: not surprised at the 1250% increase in backing.

You wildly overestimate the ability of the average gamedev. Most just want to make their ass-tier "art" game, while the talented ones are buried under corporate bureaucracy, and the smart ones aren't anywhere near gamedev because they like making a living wage.

Shouldn't you finish memoirs of a battle brothel first?
Preferably *before* GW sues you for this thing ;)

I get a bit of flak for working on multiple projects at the same time, but it's what I'm accustomed to. I find it mitigates the grind a bit to work with new ideas, and I won't be doing the heavy lifting on this one anyways. My job here is mostly to design gameplay mechanics and big picture stuff.

I'm not too worried about getting sued, since there's a list of games that borrow from the IP both bigger and more blatant with their stealing. Not gonna pretend like parody law is good protection or anything, but GW content is ridiculously hard to protect/trademark because they're so generic. Part of the reason for Age of Sigmar re-naming all the core races, and the big push in 40k as well.

Yeah, I mean they can hardly trademark stuff like Inquisition, Imperial Guard, Stormtroopers or even Space Marines, hence all the recent changes to Astra Militarum, Tempestus Scions and shit like that. If Pope Amole didnt get sued for that Buttlerian Crusade thing (actually available on Steam for money since March) I seriously doubt GW would bother going after something like this. In the past they actually went after free games (Chapter Master and various Space Hulk things), though those were directly using their IP.

Who are Space Pilgirms? Is that supposed to be the Not-Holy-Inquisition?

Or do something akin to Blood Bowl - each player there has 4 attributes (not counting skills): Movement, Strength, Agility and Armor. And it works pretty well.

Faith for Chaos forces? It would make more sense if they're of the Word Bearers or something. Otherwise, their faith in the Dark Gods is more like brainwashing, but details.

Subverse and Rance say hi.

Most just want to make their ass-tier "art" game, wh

Unity shouldn't have been made. That way we wouldn't be flooded by productions made by talentless hipsters hacks.
