December update - Cuanacht is almost here!

Hey, everyone!

Since it’s the holiday season and most of you are probably busy with last-minute shopping and trying hard not to lose their minds after hearing “Last Christmas” and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” for the millionth time, we’re going to keep this update rather brief! :)

So, first of all, you can expect a small - but really significant at the same time! - patch in January.

It’s one of these crazy things about game development that our patch notes for the upcoming update/fix are essentially three bulletpoints… and yet we’ve spent A LOT of time working on it. There’s just so much stuff happening behind the scenes that it’s sometimes hard to even describe it properly. But let’s try!

What to expect in January

Over the past few months we’ve noticed that some of you were experiencing very weird, yet very specific crashes – these are edge cases that stem from the middleware we use for vegetation. So, if the game was crashing for you over the past few months, there’s a high chance that for really crazy reasons that my non-technical brain won’t understand… our trees & grass are to blame ;D

In order to address it we’ve finally done what we were joking we’re going to do for the past four years – we’ve started creating our own vegetation system. As you can imagine, this takes a lot of time and effort – but we’ve finally arrived at version 1.0 of the said system and we’re really happy that it happened. One of the greatest benefits of this is that we’re not reliant – or “at the mercy” – of middleware we have no control over ;)

In short, thanks to this and some further work, you should see three things in the game in January:

  • Less unexplainable crashes of the game
  • Some optimizations related to CPU (people with strong GPUs and weak CPUs should see improvement in the game’s performance and stability)
  • The grass will be greener (and more dense), and there will be more variety in vegetation – new trees, bushes, and so on

Upcoming Things

Obviously, this wasn’t the only thing that we were working on for the past months – the entire team is simultaneously building an entirely new region of the game.

We’re moving north of Horns of the South into what those of you who played the board game might remember as Cuanacht.

However, we’re not rebuilding what’s already been done in the board game – we’re building an entirely new storyline with new locations and interpretations on top of some motifs that you’ll know or remember from the original. This means that, yeah, you’ll be able to meet Beor or Ailei – but they’ll be rather… different from the characters you may remember from your board game campaigns ;)

The town of Cuanacht will be only the beginning. It’s going to work as a hub, too – you can expect a lot of other places to visit and find on the map, because we’re still keeping to our design idea that density is more important than a large (but empty) map. So, the new region itself will be a little bit bigger than the first region you can play in our currently published Early Access release, but it will contain A LOT of new, cool places to explore.

We’ll be sharing more info about the new region in the coming months :)

>>> ATTENTION!
Be aware that this is an early version of the region and it’s still very much a work in progress. Things will look a lot better at the time the update goes live.

Some other upcoming improvements

There’s a lot of different stuff going on, of course. Most of it isn’t exactly newsworthy – for example, we’ve finally prepared smaller alchemy stations (because it was weird to see those huge tables full of alchemical components in the open world) – and we’re constantly fixing bugs, and so on…

However, there’s one really nice thing we’ve spent some time on and we’re really proud of it – improved character models. We’ve finally managed to devote time to setting up our characters properly, mainly fixing their body proportions and approaching this topic with more care and thought than before (gaining more control over how NPCs and enemies in the game will look in the end).

In short, this means that you can expect more variety in body shapes and postures in the game! Also, we’ve improved some tools in the meantime, and it seems that we’ll be able to squeeze better quality out of textures used for our characters – comparisons below!

##

So, that’s all of our update this month – you can expect a bug-fixing patch in January and more info on our progress every month.

For now, though, we’d like to wish y’all happy holidays and a happy new year!

Really wishing this was closer to completion right now, as I'm very much in the mood for a tightly crafted open-world RPG, and in particular a first-person one. That being said, I'm overall glad they're taking their time to do it right and making some great improvements along the way from the sounds of it.

There just needs to be more games like this in general that are actually good. It's mind-blowing sometimes how little this genre is tapped into, considering there's a gaping hole in the market waiting to be filled. Guess I'll just go play Enderal again or something to sate my cravings.

It's always been that way. I used to think that back in the days of TES: Arena even. It's weird that it never caught on further.

Patch 0.6d+e - optimization, bugfixes and new vegetation!
f2ff012e8b6054ffa25a3514d4216ce2fa0525f7.png

Hi everyone!

We know it’s pretty late but… Happy New Year! How has your year started? We wish you lots of great adventures and experience - not just the in-game one - gained in 2024!

We’re kicking off the new year with a new patch for Fall of Avalon. It’s one that brings more optimization improvements and bug fixes and to top it off, we’ve even added more grass and made it greener! If that’s not a quality change, we don’t know what is. But on a serious note, we hope this patch brings us one step closer to the optimal gameplay experience. We added all those greenish stuff some time ago, but not shouting about it knowing there are still few issues with it - especially on AMD video cards.
We've heard your feedback, received information about occurring errors, and believe that the current version should now function seamlessly on all devices. There may be a decrease in random spikes and their intensity related to assets loading while traversing the world. And if you've experienced a lack of trees or some areas were devoid of grass, know that it's a kind of magic we're trying to fight back, but it's strong in Wyrdness, and sometimes it takes time.

But here it is, a beautiful and full of life, brand new vegetation in action:

For the curious, here’s the nitty gritty of what’s been changed last time and now:
  • Less unexplainable crashes of the game, especially upon exiting dungeons
  • Some optimizations related to CPU (people with GPUs stronger than CPUs should see improvement in the game’s performance and stability)
  • UI should no longer have low resolution elements on low graphics settings
  • Npcs should now navigate around large vegetation
  • White material roofs should now have their correct colors
  • A couple additional edge cases patched up that affected select users
  • Crime penalty calculations should now use a multiplier instead of the value being squared
  • Disabled some debug graphs being available without dev mode

Take a look at how the changes appear in action:

That’s it for now, but there’s LOTS more to come in 2024. We’re super excited for what this year will bring for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon and we hope you are, as well. As always, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments and on the discussion board.

Until next one!

Hopefully night will actually look like night now with the lighting changes. Looks good.

The fact we can travel to the new area normally from the one currently in EA makes me wonder if the slides at the end of the current version are just temporary placeholders, or if they're here to stay. I figured they were there as a conclusion to the act, and you get moved to the second act location without the option to go back, but if that's not the case, then I feel like it'd make more sense to have the events of the slides actually play out in-game.

February development update! Yes, late update :)
Check what lurks in the darkness, what the dusk brings...

Greetings, wanderers!

Another update, unfortunately, slightly delayed again. (Who stole the end of the month!!!) February has the tendency to quickly slip away. However, we are not slowing down, and we bring you another dose of information about our progress and innovations in the game that can truly interest you! Just like last month, we have prepared a video for you because, as they say, one picture can say more than a thousand words. In reality, our development process has reached a level that allows us to communicate with you in this form and show you new things every month!

Take a look at this short video and live us some feedback!

We hope that this next update will further ignite your expectations and elevate the level of excitement ahead of the approaching premiere of this massive patch. For us, this is personally a very important update because we are still considering the level of involvement of Wyrdness in the game, and your opinions will be crucial for us in this matter. We strive to consistently provide you with information about our progress and want to thank you for your constructive feedback and always pleasant input, which further motivates us to work.

Below are a few more screenshots from the upcoming realm!

March development update! Fight, dodging, magic & new monsters!
The nights are more beautiful under the umbrella of stars...

Welcome, travelers!

Another monthly update and more tidbits for those hungry for news from the world of Avalon. As we've made it a habit lately, let's start with the devlog where you'll learn a bit about
changes in combat, parrying, dodging and new magic
that we'll soon put into your hands. To not keep you in suspense any longer -
we plan to release the latest patch at the turn of May/June
, where you'll finally be able to visit Cuanacht with all its beauty and dangers lurking at every step. We are incredibly excited! And now, the short video mentioned earlier:

Combat improvement

Starry sky

But that's not all we have for you today. Many of you have drawn our attention to the night and your feelings about it, and as a result, we finally have a starry sky through which the moon proudly travels. Cloudless nights will finally have their unique atmosphere. See for yourselves:

youtube_16x9_placeholder.gif

Encounters

Okay, last but not least, something without which the new land would be like the Dead Sea or the surface of the moon. We have a piece of fauna and dangerous creatures lurking for your arrival in the depths of Cuanacht. Let's start with the marshes and one "gentleman" who will surely make your life difficult. We deliberately won't reveal more, so his behavior surprises you as soon as you encounter him on your path.

And here are a few more concepts that we are currently implementing to make your lives even harder during your travels through Avalon:

Statue of the All-Mother's

At the end, we want to introduce you to one more character - All-Mother. Her enormous statue will adorn one of the northern cities. Who is she? We leave the discovery of this story up to you...

The decline is well deserved, but it isn't as though anybody is saying anything good about Avowed in those 154 pages.

If there's something good to talk about, odds are the Codex won't be there. In that sense, these 5 page are very complimentary.

Actually, from an empirical as well as psychological standpoint, the "negative" emotions are "heavier" to feel, thus attracting more attention because of their figurative gravity and, consequently, more compeling to action than the positive ones.
As you very likely know yourself, they are precursors to outcomes much more "visible" (albeit on the unfortunate side of the spectrum of doom'n'destruction or living happily ever after), and above all, they are quite sneakishly much more addictive for the brain to mull over and act upon. On the positive spectrum, mostly only utter amazement and, at some points, full-fledged love tend to have some of those mentioned effects—albeit generally short-lived or without long-lasting or gravitating effects for those beyond their focal outsets.

This game looks pretty good, but on the other hand, there is probably nothing to be utterly amazed about or whatnot. That all, of course, means that you are absolutely correct, and more. I just wanted to point out that it's only fitting that games that seem "only" very good won't attract that much attention compared to those that are hated.

Cheers, your local, mad amateur psychologist, Nika.

PS: I find the graphics and atmosphere of this game almost too good to be true. However, it's an A or AA project. That looks hopeful! Generally, only AAA projects with this kind of graphics fail utterly in the gaming department :P

This is an unreleased game from a studio that hasn't made any RPGs before. Avowed is sort of the third entry in a franchise everyone who posts here has played, from a developer (in some form or another) whose games we've been playing since we were kids.

Also, I have yet to see even one single second of footage of this game that makes it look desirable to play on any level. I'll give it more scrutiny once it's actually out, but the stuff posted in this thread up to this point has been dire. Uglier Skyrim with less enemy variety.

This game reminds me more of Morrowind than Skyrim.

Nowadays with UE5 and similar technologies, making good looking games is easier than ever.

But being A or AA is not a bad thing. The last AAA game that I brought at launch was BF1. AAA devs are wasting too much resources with diversity hires, chief diversity officers and gaymerx/sweet baby companies and only producing woke bugfests.

It's 154 pages of shitting on Avowed.

Speaking of which, this game has the same red flags as Avowed in that it's clearly aping the lackluster combat of Skyrim. I'd rather see games like this take inspiration from Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah.

Which red flags? About skyrim combat, I enjoyed combat in this game much more than in Skyrim. If you are running from enemies, they use throwing knifes on you.

So when does this come out?

IDK. The game is in 0.6 version, was launched in EA back in 2022 and "Publisher Awaken Realms and developer Awaken Realms Digital will release open-world action RPG Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series in Q4 2024" source

Go play a few hours of Tainted Grail: Conquest
or take a look at the thread for it, Overwhelmingly positive. Coming from folks who are not particularly big fans of slay the spire style games.
