Okay, I got it to work.
Followed some instructions on some official help thread which made me add the line
safe_texture_manager
to the shock.cfg file. Works now.

Jesus, close all other programs when starting a game (especially when it's not working). Bet that eight window (tabs man - check it out) Firefox of yours was hogging half of your memory, if not more.
