tl;dr rundown
>CoH shutdown because Koreans were embarrassed the western office was doing better
>western guy leaks code to reddit mods hoping they spread it farther and the game stays alive
>reddit mods keep it secret and make a private server with 3000~ people
>character data still on server, so too was the then current billing information which was now in the possesion of the south american in charge of everything
>same reddit mods start accepting donations (now $700,000~) to "reverse engineer server code" while reporting people who are actually trying to do so, inserting themselves in the other projects for sabotage, and spreading disinformation among the community to hinder other projects
>they keep it all secret by using the positions of people involved in the server to silence anyone
>oopsy daisy now the secret is out
>"dis didnt hapen lol plz dont attn to dis"
>story gains attention to it
>"y r u all mad? be happy the game exists and stop paying attention to this"
>story gains attention to it
>"ILL DELETE IT ALL IF YOU DONT STOP PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS!"
>story gains attention to it
>everyone wants the server code to be released and / or the private server and / or the people involved to be killed

lol no
City of Heroes never got anywhere close to the popularity Lineage 2 had, it was the #2 played MMO in the world for a while
CoH was better than any of the other shit NCSoft had going on at the time and was still making money. It was basically shut down just because it was the only company they owned not based in Worst Korea.

Are you fucking kidding me, I've been wanting to play CoH again since the game died.

I made Commander Keen in CoH. Purple shirt, yellow football helmet, bluejeans, red sneakers, super jump as his movement power (Pogostick, you know) and gun and gadgets for his combat powers. Kinda wish I still had an old screenshot of him, even though he didn't mesh with all the edgelords.

It seems inevitable for many games of this style to develop insane players with control issues.

Well, of course. Who the hell ELSE would want to be a server admin? I mean, if you like this game, do YOU want to be essentially forever not-playing? Cuz you can't really play the game if you're running the game.

So what's that leave you? A guy who doesn't care about the game, but nonetheless wants to run the server for it anyway...for...probably profit? Despite the dubious legality of doing so? So, a crook.

Or someone who DOES care about the game, but then can never play it without introducing a whole host of corruption issues and controlfreakery? So, an insane person.

And this is why all MMO private server operators tend to fall into these two categories: Crooks, and crazies. And often both.

Are we talking about CoH + all the expansion packs? That'd be pretty crazy.

Always wanted to play City of Heroes. Crazy how a secret could be kept on the internet.

You're aware NCSoft owns ArenaNet, right?

Right now the account creation is down and will probably remain so for the rest of the night. Hyped to give this game a try as i've heard nothing but good things about its character creation system.

You cant really leave the starting map, so i would say just wait a few months until things normalize a bit and we get a stable version.

lag is unbearable and youll end up with a bad impression of it all if you go in now.

So wait, they kept a secret server secret since game closed and it somehow didn't leak earlier? In internet terms that's an absolutely insane accomplishment. Someone get these guys on government payrolls.

Sometimes the rumours surfaced, but no one really believed it.
This MMO has a pretty devoted following, so pretty much no one that got invited would risk losing access to the game.

I was there when the servers shut down years ago, the sheer amount of passion from the playerbase in the last 6 months before the shutdown, and especially the last day, it was an amazing thing to see.

Okay, the current server that's up is apparently for testing and they're officially launching on the 27th. So any characters made now will be wiped when that launches. So don't invest too much time if you care about losing progress.

Welp, the new COH server is down for good. NCsoft really has a hard on for keeping this game dead apparently. It was fun while it lasted, a weekend of a great MMO I never got to try before.

I've heard the DMCA was fake, and either way apparently efforts are underway to get a server back up. The code is out there, someone will put a server up even if it's in Russia or something. The biggest issue right now is that the admins are incompetent and handled this situation horribly and that's lead to /vg/ autistically trolling the discord, which lead to a moderator crackdown, which lead to more autistic trolling, and vice versa, so now there's so much fog of war and misinformation nobody really knows what the fuck is going on.

It's going to take a while for this shit to get ironed out but I have a feeling unless the admins reorganize and improve transparency it's going to fracture the whole community and we'll end up with like 100 different CoH private servers and nobody fucking wants that.
