Decline Stealth in rpg games is always bad.

It's stealth an interesting mechanic to you in RPGs?

Stealth in games that aren't focused on stealth (thief, etc) is pretty much always bad. It's usually just some half baked system that's easily manipulated to look ridiculous. Nothing's worse than watching NPCs following their set patterns while you quick reload to try again. Seeing some eye symbol slowly fill up then going back down is not an interesting mechanic. Why do RPGs always feel the need to include this half baked mechanic into every single rpg game?

Because of stealth and related skills. Thanks to them you can hide in everywhere anytime. Also mechanics are usually over simplified, you kill one guy and his corpse is discovered, there is either no reaction or the reaction passes away with the time (like 2 minutes) then they continue to whatever they were programmed to. The stealth should provide a completely different way to play, it's just many game devs have no resource or the ones who have them are lazy fucks.

It's perfectly fine, provided you do it correctly. If your combat is turn-based, so should be your stealth. Make it involve the same layers of strategy, AP management, cover, and preferably use more than one skill for it.

I know. I'm the first person to call games like witcher and mass effect not RPGs. I was using it as an example of a game that focuses on stealth.

Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture
I have never had any fun with stealth in any rpg I have ever played, so I usually try to avoid stealth mechanics as much as possible.

Probably the only time I had fun with something related to stealth was in IWD2, when you drink the invisibility potion to save the villagers from being murdered. But, yeah, that has nothing to do with stealth mechanics

Apart from rogue sneak attacks, I cannot stand stealth in most games. It's very rarely if ever done well.

It's actually useful for some combat strategies in Wizardry 7, though it's not really stealth in that sense but the ability to hide during combat

Let's strip all mechanics that have so far been badly implemented from RPGs.
No RPGs to discuss - we can all go home.
Apart from those who will choose to stay in /gd/ but no one will miss them.

We would land on raw dungeon crawlers again, no other genre has as good dungeon design as the best blobbers

I might get shit for this, but DA:O actually had pretty nice stealth mechanics. A lot of advantages of sneaking around the enemy, positioning, etc. Helped a lot with positioning, too.

The problem is not stealth as a concept but rather the attempt to hamfist the gameplay vocabulary of Tenchu/MGS/Thief into RPGs.

Roleplaying game games.
I'm actually disappointed in myself for this. Might delete the thread now...
Honestly I fucked up a lot when I made this thread. But it's something I believe in so I can't just delete it.

Until some rpg actually goes all the way and makes good stealth mechanics - without annoying things like an eye filling up half way then going down, npc designated routes, and obvious paths you need to go - they should stay out of RPGs and be left to the stealth genre where we can pretend it doesn't exist.

What exactly are you hoping to accomplish with stealth? Are you wanting realism in the game? I haven't played thief but i've heard interesting things about the series. In a simple tactical rpg i don't need much more than a combat bonus for attacking while hidden, sneaking past security, stealing undetected, and getting the hell away from pursuers. As to corpses, etc... if the engine allows hiding of bodies thats fibe, if not.. and they just disappear then i won't sweat it. How long security remains on alert I don't really care. Honestly, i love sneaking around and stealing shit and getting out. Arcanum was a bit broken as i sold shit right back to the same stores.

Ontopoly what do you think about Spiders games (mars war logs, greedfall, etc)?
I played bound by flame once and it left a bad enough taste in my mouth that I never really bothered to look at any of their other stuff. Why? Have they Incorporated good stealth mechanics into their games?

I've been hearing a lot about this fluent and I'm beginning to think he's a pretty cool guy. What did he even do that pissed everyone off?
