Can't remember, but try Dispel Magic, Hold Person, Charm Person or just hit him until he goes down.

Scribing scrolls will add that spell to your magic users list of known spells so they can then memorize it, if they don't know it already.

Cast Read Magic to identify scrolls.
Cleric scrolls can be used without regrets. Mage scrolls is main source of new spells for your magic users.

What about cleric scrolls?

Unlike Mages, Clerics automatically learn all the spells they're able to cast ; scrolls can't teach them anything new.

If you have too many cleric scrolls, just sell the ones that don't have very useful spells.

Regarding encumbrance : if your PCs find themselves unable to move as much as usual, it may be because they're carrying too many coins.

I'll just sell them, as I will do with potions I guess.
This is bad idea. JUST PLAY COK ALREADY!
BTW thanks for those words, this game is awesome, the engine is genius. Albeit the story could be somewhat better, graphics and combat really make up for it.
Also not really much C&C faggotry so far which I don't actually give a fuck about.

Also, about saving throws: How do I know how many of them do my chars and the enemy's have and how they work? They're getting confusing and my sleep spells and hold persons seem to be failing terribly as of late. AND CASTING TIMES, how do they get calculated?

You are welcome.

You can find information about saving throws and casting times in the 1st edition Player's Handbook.

Seriously, spend 2 minutes reading the manual FFS damicore. That's how we used to do it.

Now all we do is press A on the controller.

I think saving throws aren't explained correctly in the manual, actually. I didn't know anything about D&D when I played Champions and it took me some time to figure out how they worked.

Basically, when one of your PC is targeted by a mental spell, hit by a poisoned attack, looked at by a medusa or things like that, the computer will roll a random number between 1 and 20. If the number is equal or above your PC's saving throw number, the negative effect doesn't happen.

(There are several kinds of saving throws, but let's not get into that. One of the reasons I think 3rd Edition is better is that it doesn't have a saving throw versus rods, staves and wands...)

Against some spells such as Fireball or Lightning Bolt, a PC making his save will take half damage.

Unlike the other stats of your PCs, saving throws numbers aren't shown. They're very poor for low-level PCs and improve as they gain levels. The same goes for monsters ; that's why spells such as Hold Person or Stinking Cloud are extremely useful in Champions and almost useless in Dark Queen of Krynn.

What's wrong about asking for recommendations or extra clarifications on subjects which are a little unclear in a game? I like to play games with a good knowledge of the rules as that enables for further strategizing.
I read the whole manual, and the adventurer's journal and almost everything I asked AFTER I started playing the game was not in the manual.
I've never played D&D and reading on the computer is pretty bothersome, I'd love to have an actual copy of the manual.
I may follow a couple of chapters of a lets play to clear the remaining questions I've got about the system and once I get to DKoK I'll be in a better position to tackle it down.
Might aswell check the D&D 1st Ed. Player's Handbook but god I hate reading on the computer. Are you sure this game si 1st Ed? I remember I read somewhere this game was a 2nd Ed. one.

Thanks for your input Erebus, I guess that lower leveled spells require lesser saving throws as stinking clouds is working like a charm atm but sleep and hold person are starting to fail me.
Sometimes i'll cast a spell and the game won't even tell me if the spell had any effect at all, the animation for sleep just pops up when I target a Thaumaturgist but when the little sparkle gets there it does nothing nor does a message display anything about it being uneffective. It just doesn't work.
Do any of the goldbox games display any further information on saving throws per PC?

Sorry BRO. Yeah I forgot, spell casting times and the particulars of spell saves aren't really stated in the manual (which I believe is for a reason). Like how skeletons are resistant to slashing weapons, Drow are immune to hold person/Sleep etc...

When trying to save a recently created character, the game bitches about "UNEXPECTED ERROR DURING SAVE 3HALI". A thread in Abandonia says that creating a CoK folder in C: like the .cfg file tells you to will solve the problem, but I don't really want to clutter that folder with game saves, especially because D-Fend makes it all so neat already. Is there another way? I tried changing the path in the .cgf to C:\Users\Me\D-Fend Reloaded\VirtualHD\Champions of Krynn\SAVE, but apparently it doesn't accept folder names with more than 8 characters. DOS is so fucking Dozzy. r00fles!

No, a PC/monster will use the same saving throw against all spells, no matter their level. However, Sleep only works against low-level creatures and will become completely useless before you're halfway through the game. And Hold Person only works against humans.

I think I had that problem once, but I don't remember the details. Are you by any chance using Windows Vista ?

I'd change the folder where you've got CoK. It's too damn long for such an old game, IIRC older operating systems had problems with long directories.
I had the exact same problem, It's also got to do with how you mount the C: virtual drive in DosBOX.
I just had to change the directory in the .cfg file. It was C:\CoK\SAVE and I had to change it to C:\KRYNN\SAVE.

Well, I just did what D-Fend told me to and let it install the game in its default "VirtualDrive" folder. I assumed it would make it work somehow :?

No, Windows 7. In fact, I never had problems installing games in Program Files, even with Vista, so I never got used to installing games in C: / Games. Didn't even think of it until Fowyr gently reminded me.

So, should I have two save folders for CoK (one where D-Fend installed the game, and one in Games/ CoK), or should I just move the SAVE folder to C: / Games / CoK?

I think people recommend not installing on the program files folder because windows blocks some access there if you don't have admin rights, or something.

Also you can use path as C:\Users\Me\D-Fend~1\Virtua~1\Champi~1\SAVE

D-Fend for fags. Just use NC if you want file manager.
Move game to c:\dosgames\cok
change paths in the cfg to C:\COK\SAVE\
Add this strings to dosbox.conf after [autoexec]
mount c: c:\dosgames
c:
run dosbox
type this:
cd cok
start

Heh, I was just going to post that. The .conf file created by D-Fend tells me that

[autoexec]
@echo off
SET PATH=Z:\
keyb US 437
mount C "C:\Users\Me\D-FEND~1\VIRTUA~1\"

C:
cd\
cd \CHAMPI~1
Z:\config.com -securemode > nul
START.EXE
exit

So I treid to chenge the áth to C:\Users\Me\D-FEND~1\VIRTUA~1\CHAMPI~1\SAVE. Still got the same error. I'll try the above...I just wanted to use D-fend since Jaesun highly recommends it in his "how to set up FRUA" guide.

fke edit:

So I treid to chenge the áth

:what:

Oh. Don't change anything in dosbox.conf.
Change path in the cfg to
c:\CHAMPI~1\SAVE

This should work.

Read how works mount command. Your "c:\" in the dosbox is really "C:\Users\Me\D-FEND~1\VIRTUA~1\" on your computer.

Might aswell check the D&D 1st Ed. Player's Handbook but god I hate reading on the computer.
Just check chapter about saving throws and search spell descriptions for time of casting.
Are you sure this game si 1st Ed? I remember I read somewhere this game was a 2nd Ed. one.
Afair it's 1st edition, also intro do not mention 2nd. 2nd ed Player's Hanbook is fine too and easily findable.

I know, it says at the top that it will be deleted as soon as I close it. I was trying to change the .cfg file, but...

...it looks like I herped so hard I derped. Of course, it's a virtual c drive ( I don't remember dealing with this when playing Arena, manually mounting and all. Weird). Characters are correctly saving now.

I'm also using NC as suggested here, it's pretty nifty.
