Speaking of cyberpunk and russian games: Paradise Cracked and Cops 2170.
Just because no one mentioned them and they qualify to be RPG. TB combat (heavy TB; too much TB imo), companions (comic relief, no romance), exp.

Space 1889 or whatever it was called. Although technically maybe more like steam punk, bordering on it.

Yes, steampunk(back when steampunk was not popular).

Arcanum, crap again, but steam punk-ish.

And more 'science fantasy'(with heavy emphasis on 'fantasy') and not really 'science fiction'.

Shadowrun on SNES and Genesis. Haven't played that in over a decade, forget how much RPG it is. Looks like they made a new version of it a few years back, except now it's a shitty FPS. Well, probably shitty, screen shots don't look so bad.

Again, science-fantasy. Also the Genesis version is a completely different game than the NES game. the Genesis game kicked ass(for a console CRPG) whereas the NES game sucked barrels of ass!

B.A.T. 1 and 2. Not the most RPG'y that I remember though.

Action-adventure games with a few RPG elements tossed in to be precise. Very well done for what they are though but not CRPGs really.

KoTOR I and II. Well atleast there are stats. Exploration, or point of it is pretty much non existant.

Star Wars was more 'Space Opera' than what the OP seems to be looking for though. And a specific type of space opera that has less well-defined elements(such as tons of species/races for which little technical details are known for example as well as the almost mystical "The Force") and more of a Jules Verne fell to it, stemming from it's roots movie-serial inspirations.

Superhero League of Hoboken. Technically post apoc, but not in a Fallout way by any means.

I thought this was a comedy super-hero adventure type game? If I played it then it was a long time ago and I don't remember obviously...

I can only add that there was an indie, first-person CRPG called "Gene Splicing" that was released as freeware in the early to mid 2000's and featured early 1990s era graphics(think Might and magic 3 or so...only sci-fi).

BloodNet have all what you try to find.

isometric - check
lots of dialog + story faggotry - check
world that actually feels alive - check
QFT
Also actually good RPG system skill/stat-wise.

And give a try to Dreamweb, even though it's an adventure. Awesome atmosphere.
I always thought of Bloodnet as more of an adventure. In that you spend most time in dialogues and figuring out which item to use where, and combat being sparse and optional (if you pissed someone off). How do stats affect gameplay exactly?

@OP You might try Whale's Voyage 1+2, it's a scifi RPG with spaceship trading element iirc. Just remembered it while wrowsing abandonia.

True, but only because it so story and item-driven. Also skills and stats don't change much in the game.

Actually, you always have some fights. Trans-tech entrance, vampire's flat and so on.

Try traveling cyberspace with Cloaking less than 40. Or use any multi-part weapon with low mechanical skill.

Think about Starflight meets roguelike. You don't have the complex dialog with aliens from Starflight and the universe is smaller. But everything else is more complex like exploring, gear for each unique crewmember, different ships etc.

And it has a tileset now ;)

The wiki explains everything well btw:

Here is another one: http://www.asciisector.net/ Lesser focus on exploration, combat isn't turnbased (but fun) and gfx aren't tilebased (but still good). It has lots of possibilities and options including a dynamic universe and boarding ships.

I want to second that. They have the blob view and are not isometric, but other than that, they pretty much fit the OPs description. IIRC, the Amiga versions had better music, they should run just fine with WinUAE. I had lots of fun with the games back then.

Here's a screenshot and some infos:

Shadowrun for SNES and Genesis. Both are good, I prefer Genesis version due to the significant replay value and random mission generator.

Which is also the reason I like Restricted Area, which is essentially Cyberpunk Diablo. No storyfaggery, but cool if you like cyberpunk and grindy hack and slash.

Didn't see it mentioned, and I know it's more science-fantasy, but Septerra Core is 90s-ish isometric RPG faggotry with words and stuff.

Sorry for resurrecting a 5 page old thread, but i''d really like to know if there's a sci-fi rpg out there which basically plays like the bard's tale games or devil whiskey, having space stations and underground facilities / innards of star ships instead of towns and dungeons. The only game I've played that could kinda satisfy the criteria was doom rpg for mobile phones, but I'm wondering if anyone ever made something similar back in the day.

I did try out mines of Ttitan though, and while the free roaming part is exactly what I'd like, i didn't enjoy the combat that much.

Centauri Alliance is probably the closest you can get to what you're looking for. You'd need a C64 or Apple II emulator to play it, though. The game was designed by Michael Cranford, the creator of the first two Bard's Tales. ;)

You could also try Whale's Voyage 1+2, but I bet you wouldn't enjoy the combat at all. Plus, at least in WV1, you explore towns and planets rather than space stations.

EDIT. A small grammar fix.

Thank you for the suggestions. I don't mind exploring planets and towns, as long as they don't have blacksmiths, taverns and temples xD
