Are there any? What i'm looking for in particular is something similar to a classic RPG 1997 circa: isometric, lots of dialog + story faggotry, and a world that actually feels alive. Of course, if there was such a game i'd have heard about it by now, but you never know. Beyond that, i'm open to anything, as long as its not post-apocalyptic or anything like that. So no Fallout clone i guess. Space faring civilizations, galactic empires, aliens, or at best cyberpunk. That's the type of stuff i'm looking for.

Do yourself a favor and track down the Genesis (rom, cough) version of Buck Rogers. It was vastly improved by one of my favorite RPG designers. The ship-to-ship combat is fantastic, relies on party member statistics, and after disabling their shields, navigating in and blowing up their engine, you can board, fight tactical combat, and hijack ships.

So much

I remember there were a couple of sci-fi Diablo clones about a decade ago. Doubt that's what you're looking for though, and can't remember the names anyway. I'll be interested to see if anyone else comes up with anything.

Buck Rogers? Lots of dialog? Doth not compute. Cool games though.

There's also stuff like Hard Nova and Planet's Edge, though dialog isn't exactly commonplace.

Hummmm...

Dunno if I can go THAT specific but have you given I-War (Independance War) or I-War 2 a run?

Mars Saga/Mines of Titan - sort of a Sci-Fi, non-SSI Gold Box-like. As I recall, combat is real-time with pause, but slow enough that its generally not a problem. Character creation is kind of cool and there's a decent set of skills, although most non-combat skills are only marginally useful.

Martian Dreams - a spin-off of the Ultima series. I've played it some, but barely remember anything about it. Victorian era in space.

Mars Saga/Mines of Titan

After 15 or so years, replaying Mars Saga by playing Mines Of Titan for the first time.

Have slowed the texting to follow the play out of each round.

Very necessary to pay attention, especially if repeating orders.

With DosBox, can play MOT in a window, minimize it, and then do other tasks.

Larger parties require choreographing the formation, shifting positions to the threat.

Works well with pairs of recruits. The best shots supported by the best med-s.

Some times the troops are scattered by a collision of NPC-s, and the friendly fire forgives not.

Remember to save early and often.

Not a decade ago, but:
Space Hack
BorderZone
Metalheart: Replicants Rampage
Restricted Area
The Omega Syndrome
The Fall: Last Days of Gaia

Some are fallout clones.

As someone said, Anachronox, although I think it's crap, especially side quests, although the voice acting is fun.

Space 1889 or whatever it was called. Although technically maybe more like steam punk, bordering on it.

Arcanum, crap again, but steam punk-ish.

Shadowrun on SNES and Genesis. Haven't played that in over a decade, forget how much RPG it is. Looks like they made a new version of it a few years back, except now it's a shitty FPS. Well, probably shitty, screen shots don't look so bad.

Centauri Alliance. Pure sci-fi, has psychic powers substituting for magic sort of.

MegaTraveller series.

2400 A.D. Not sure if it was ever released on PC. Apple II if nothing else.

B.A.T. 1 and 2. Not the most RPG'y that I remember though.

Alpha Broccoli could be called a sci-fi if you look at some of the tech. Again though, RPG qualities are questionable.

Starflight I and II. Not really RPG's, but you do have a large-ish crew with skills they can improve, lots of exploration, fun dialogue etc.

Neocron. Never played it more than 5 minutes. Think I had some trouble installing it or something, and seemed like an even crappier Anachronox. Dunno.

KoTOR I and II. Well atleast there are stats. Exploration, or point of it is pretty much non existant.

Superhero League of Hoboken. Technically post apoc, but not in a Fallout way by any means.

Shame Obsidian canned their Alien RPG as it looked promising (would have been shipped a buggy mess of course but the community would have fixed it).

Most of the best RPGs have been mentioned, I could recommend a fair few sci-fi/cyberpunk adventure games with very good stories but no RPG stats, etc., like Blade Runner, Perry Rhodan, The Longest Journey (+ its sequel Dreamfall), and Culpa Innata.

Also actually good RPG system skill/stat-wise.

And give a try to Dreamweb, even though it's an adventure. Awesome atmosphere.

I'm really tempted to say Innocent Sin, does that make me a bad person?

If you don't consider quantum metaphysics and related psychological weirdness to be Science Fiction, though, and just want some Space Opera instead you can't really go wrong with Hardnova or Sentinel Worlds, though they aren't isometric.

Albion has been mentioned before and I second that. It's not a sci-fi game in the strictest sense though since you get stranded on a planet where technology is far from advanced. So for most of the game you play as a stranger in a strange land. It's very strong on story, lore and dialogue, not so strong in its turn-based combat due to limitations in tactical choices. If you don't mind that I'm sure you will like it. It's abandonware too!

Two nights ago I came across Space Rogue, which looks like Origin's prototype for Privateer. Looks like you fly around, do some quests and get to explore space stations. Maybe it's not exactly an RPG, but a space adventure with some fighting mixed in. Sounds like a winner to me. It's in my queue for this weekend.

Planet Alcatraz Russian version. If you like vulgar speech.
Precursors is FPS, but it has more text than some games marketed as RPGs.

Main problem with RPGs without swords is that person with a sniper riffle which is sniping from 2 km away. (Which tends to be troublesome because guess how large is one pixel at 2km assuming resolution 1280x1024.)
