That and space fighters are rule of cool derp anyway. The only way to make a realistically looking space fighter is by not making one at all.

Those ships are supposed to be atmosphere-capable, yes. No, there won't be atmospheric flight in game at launch. It hasn't been flat out ruled out in the future though.

Edit: That was my 1000th post, weeeee!
And this was my 4500th. And I only wrote this post so I could reach 4500. Like a Boss.

Ok, I'm buying that explanation. But I checked SC wiki and the rest of ships' design is kinda meh. Basically everything there is "Plane with Atrophied Wings", kind of space ship. I hope in future they will release some less generic space-only vessels.

Why do they look like modern fighter jets? Are there "in atmosphere" flights in the game too?

It's automated (meaning players can't control it), but ships will land on planetside starports at launch, so there's an actual reason for them to be capable of atmospheric flight.

I think the ships look fine—absolutely stunning, actually. Most of the designs are rather utilitarian, spartan, and even generic, yes, but that's the Wing Commander "Terran Confederation" style. Remember that that there will be multiple alien races with their own ships and their own styles, such as the Vanduul Scythe, which is suitably exotic.

Nice catch, but I'm fairly sure that's just an amazing coincidence—not only the ship's faction allegiance and name, but its form factor as well. According to Chris, the United Empire of Earth is patterned after the Roman Empire, and I'm quite certain that the name "Vanduul" is a homophone of Vandal. The Vandals sacked Rome in 455, and the Vanduul in Star Citizen are similarly characterized as a warlike race of "barbarians" hostile to the UEE. Of course, even such an obvious reference to the ancient world is lost on most of the mouth-breathing fucktards who comprise the Star Citizen fan base.

As for the ship's name, I believe fans began using the nickname "Scythe" to refer to it (it was simply called "Vanduul fighter" early on) because of its ramming blade wing and overall resemblance to a sickle or scythe, at which point Chris just decided the name fit and made it official. That's actually pretty neat, since one would indeed expect alien craft to gain their human nicknames based upon their appearance and according to the whims of the public.

like Blaines anti-feminist squadron.

Looks like you will be able to maybe make an alliance with magic ponies, maybe even clowns.

I'm not sure what you mean by more advanced peripheral support; perhaps you could be more specific? I've heard good things about the HOTAS. Personally, I enjoy playing with the Logitech F710 Wireless gamepad, and also on the Xperia Play. I should also mention VO was one of the finalists in Oculus' "Gift A Rift" contest. Generally, one of VO's selling points is that it supports just about every device known to man.

Really? Perhaps I was mistaken. If VO supports TrackIR, Oculus Rift, MFDs (multi-function displays), switch arrays and so on, I'll need to give them a try.

Yes, it supports the Rift. (I couldn't resist )

Too lazy to read the entire thread...so how many people actually think this game is ever going to be released? I doubt it will.

He's got 15 million kwabucks from crowdfunding and already had a working prototype when funding started. Also he's a veteran developer who know how things work in the business. The odds are pretty good.
