In Y2, Majima is the same as he was in Y1, just more slapstick-y and less sinister because he's your ally in that game while in Y1 he was working for the antagonists. Same thing for Y3. In Y4, all slapstick and insanity is removed and Majima exists to explain backstory and create false intrigue. In Y5 he exists entirely to create false intrigue. Clearly the Y1-3 versions of the character are why people like him and people only like him in 4-6 by the virtue of those earlier games. So changing his character in line with his popularity was unnecessary and retarded. Crazy Majima is the true Majima!Eh, retconning like that is nothing new for the series. Consider Majima in Yakuza 1 vs how he is depicted elsewhere in the series. His character was changed in line with his popularity later.
Even in Y0 he clearly has fits where he goes off the chain and acts like Y1 Majima, and of course those are the most memorable parts of his character in that game. Y0 is truer to Majima's character than 4-6 which is why he has enjoyed continued popularity after Y0's newcomer boom in the west. If Y6 was the first game a lot of people played then nobody would give a fuck about boring gay Majima.
