So a while ago while looking something to get my Tibia/Ultima itch off my back without having to play online with other people, i found about Ruins & Riches.
This "game" is based off the Ultima Online engine, something called RunUO, made by a single dev called Djeryv, now to call this a labour of love is really selling this fucking "thing" short, this guy has been working on this for more than a decade on this and keeps updating it monthly.
This feels like Ultima Online fucked the entirety of AD&D books and in between sessions played Rougelikes and whatever came out of that is R&R.
Quoting the dev itself:
Players of old Ultima games will find the world familiar, and a lot of the quests and lore draw upon the old games. The main land of Ruins & Riches is a Sosaria based on the map of Ultima III: Exodus, but the whole world consists of multiple lands to be discovered.
I have only sinked around 15 hours into this, slowly moving my way in town mining, hunting, gathering shit, crafting ingots and learning the basics of alchemy + training to use a mace and went to the graveyard dungeon and holy fuck this fucking thing just goes on and on, it truly feels like a damn dungeon crawl because i need to be preapred with food, water, my trusty pole to check for traps, potions, bags and smaller bags for my loot (that i just can macro so the looted stuff goes into each assigned bag), if you dont equip correctly you can end fucked by many of the monsters in it.
One day after playing cards in the tavern to kill time for morning, i went into the dungeon to get enough gold to finally get armor, so i knew that zombies, probably some skeletons and if i was unlucky a ghoul or two could be my encounter for the day, boy i was fucking wrong because on the third floor, out of the fucking blue a type of vampire comes to fuck my shit up in ways i couldn't think possible, i was not ready for this shit but i felt something i haven't felt in any RPG i recently played before.
I fucking feared for my character life and feared what was around the corners of a dungeon like if i was playing with my friend Max that fucking loves AD&D tables, nothing is ever static, not even the wares of traders that change each 3 days, same with prices that vary depending on the town, on how much shit have you sold to them, affecting the economy.
Also, killing a vampire is just not the act of reducing the fucker to 0 HP as i soon found out, i went to the tavern, hire some NPCs to aid me in my battle against that fuck to retrieve my loot and lo and behold, he almost takes down my entire party but he was not dead, dead per se, you actually need to have a mallet and stake to fucking kill it for real, doing so also allows you to pick the path of a priest.
And from what i have read around, i am not even close to scratching the surface of this game, there is TONS of content and i mean TONS of shit to found and everything can be found from rumors (you can usually see NPCs that are dressed up as adventurers/players standing around talking to each other spouting flavor text and false or true rumours of quests you can do and bounties to do) or from books or scrolls in-game and since this game is not really known at all, you get that sense of "mystery and wonder" from back then when the information on games were very limited.
You can play solo, hire NPCs that have classes archetypes as hirelings or adventurers for X amount of days OR you can setup your own server and play with your friends.
The game itself is very customizable, from how traders work, to skill gain to skills caps. To be honest i upped the skill gain rate and did unlimited skill cap, why you may ask? Because fuck grinding and i am terrible at decision making and i don't like wasting my time when i fuck up a build so i can "grind" away my hearts content cooking and other skills while still be able to fight and cast a bit of magic.
You can download it here if you want to give it a spin, there is also a server called Ultima Adventures that is based off this but took another path with way more content and flavor but more than anything, the offline counter part of Ultima Adventures wants to simulate Ultima Online but offline with the flair of Ruins & Riches, while Ruins & Riches wants to be its own game with the option of coop with other players.
You can check the features of Ultima Adventures here, they are pretty fucking good too

This is Djeryv’s official version of the game. It was branded as “Ruins & Riches” to pay homage to games like classic TSR Dungeons & Dragons, from which much of the methodology originates. The game takes place in an alternate universe based off of Richard Garriott’s game, shortly after the events of his third game in 1983. You can create a character that tries to make their way through many lands. You will have to find a way to feed yourself, and acquire equipment to explore your way around. Everything you need to know can be learned within the virtual environment. Knowledge can be acquired by talking to the citizens of the land, or you may find a book or scroll with clues and other information. There are also some commands you can use to bring up additional information.
This game is designed around older MUD methodologies and rules based on early 1970’s Dungeons & Dragons games. There is also an abundance of randomness inspired by Rogue-like games of the 1970’s. The spirit of this game is simply an experience of exploration and discovery, with the open sandbox feel of an enormous virtual world. The realm consists of 9 different lands, about 20 cities and villages, and over 100 dungeons to explore. Settlements sell their own goods and may change from time to time, but the merchants can be helpful in repairing or identifying items. Death brings with it penalties upon resurrection, either in the form of negative character effects or the parting of gold as tribute to the gods that bring your life back.
Like the games of yesteryear, this will have you slaying rabbits and deer as you work your combat skills to brave further into the wilderness. The further you can explore, and the more dangerous the area, the better the rewards. This is about finding treasure of a monetary and magical nature to aid you in your chosen path. It is also about resource management, as you need a supply of food and drink if you plan to be gone for long periods of time. You will also be faced with dilemmas on how you will carry all of your found riches from the dungeons. Treasure is just not found in gold coins. You may find copper and silver coins, which can fill your pouches quickly. You may find exotic furs, rare kegs of ale, unusual carpets, strange books, or finely crafted statues...all of which can either decorate a home or be given to people in town in exchange for gold which can be aided if you can identify the item.
There are random quests in place that will have you traveling far and wide. Along with that, there is also a large quest inspired by the old computer role-playing game "The Bard’s Tale". Garriott’s lore has been incorporated into the game, but morphed to fit within this potentially multiplayer environment. You can take on quests to defeat the Shadow Lords and create a gem of immortality. You can also defeat the Banes and bring the Serpents of Chaos and Order back into balance. You can even work toward becoming the Titan of Ether. There are also many characters from Garriott that may give you quests, in which the rewards will be custom artifacts.
