The melee combat system is very similar to the Risen 2 system with the addition of a strong blow, which is similar to the system in Arcania. The strong blow can break your block. Instant heal with a healing potion is still there.
If you click at the right moment you can concatenate blows. The right moment is indicated by a red glow around the hand of the player character (like the green glow in Arcania).
Thus, you have to do more during combat than only bashing the left mouse button. Actually you have to click the right mouse button most of the time which can be very effective against most enemies for some reason.
Otherwise together with the fast rolling to avoid enemy blows the combat plays somewhat like a faster version of the combat in Arcania but more indirect.

75% off or bust.

I thought combat in Risen 2 was fine, but then I like action games. What really worries be above is some flashbacks to corridor islands.

As long as this game is even half as good as the excellent Arcania, it's a day one purchase for me. I might buy two in case I decide to just jerk off all over one of the copies.

The melee combat in Risen 2 sucked. Especially compared to Risen 1. I see now what they mean by 'like Witcher combat' with the click when it flashes garbage. All they had to do was go back to Risen 1 combat... I don't understand why that's so hard.

R2 combat was OK, the main problems were (1) lack of dodging initially, (2) gimmicks were unbalanced. But yeah, the R1 formula deserves one more game.

The melee combat wasn't great but I also didn't think it was annoyingly bad either. Just roll and slash over and over, like Witcher 2. The musket combat was really unique and fun for me, I flat-out enjoyed that shit.

Instant heal with a healing potion is still there.

Seems to me like no one at Piranha Bytes actually has any idea why Gothic 1&2 were successes. They probably just got lucky and now flail around trying to replicate the success without knowing what they are doing.

Gothic 1st team:
Founders:
Alex Brüggemann - died in 2013
Mike Hoge - only one that is still on the team, I think
Stefan Nyul
Tom Putzki

Students/Programmers on the first Gothic:
Dieter Hildebrandt
Ulf Wohlers
Bert Speckels (game engine)

Risen 2 combat was fine, wascmore or less identical to Risen 1. I enjoyed the dirty tricks a lot.

Risen 1 would suggest otherwise, it was basically a re-skinned, upgraded Gothic 1 (though the setting and atmosphere felt much more like vanilla Gothic 2) which made it a very enjoyable game. Why they abandoned that proven concept (instead of improving it further)in Risen 2 I don't know, maybe publisher (Deep Silver) meddling?

Have you forgotten the last act with the endless fights against lizardmen and the zelda-like endboss? His would suggest they first copied the Gothic formula without understanding it and then "improved" it. it is copying without understanding or else Risen 1 would have amplified the strengtha of the Gothic formula and avoided the weaknesses.

I am half-convinced if Piranha Bytes would not have needed money and to regain some fan favor after the Gothic III fiasco we would have gotten a Risen 2 immediately.

I believe that a lot of game developers around the time Risen 2 was being developed believed that Mass Effect-like games were the future of the RPG.

Extrapolate.

(today they believe Skyrim-like games are, trolololol)
