Getting decent scores around the 7-8 range from none-mainstream reviewers.

After finishing Chained Echoes this game feels very mediocre. Its not bad or anything combat is fine and story is passable but I might have irrational hate towards rpg maker games.

But I have probably soon finished this game so I write more thoughts later

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
It's not rpg maker tho, it was unity. The devs used to make rpg maker but they remastered ara fell with unity and been using it since.

For chained echoes comparison, i think CE is just something special. I severely underestimated it and i am maybe 80% into CE and i adore it. For rotp, there are several criticism i have regarding combat but i really like the story and when the combat works (boss battles mainly) it works, just not too much with regular enemy encounters.

Third jrpg in a row I have played with a strong sequel bait and this probably has the strongest :?

Better than your average jrpg but not top 10 material

Combat and story were good I actually died multiple times playing with the highest difficulty option (4 total to choose from). There are 6 optional bosses and after beating those they gave so much xp and pretty op passive boosts that rest of the game was a cake walk. There is an exhaustion mechanic which encourages to change party but I found that it was not needed since there are items to reduce exhaustion. Random encounters can be deadly early but after first 5 hours or so you can buy full inventory of hp/mana potions those are way too cheap and easy to buy pretty much every 30min. Also you can save anywhere.
Boss encounters were probably my favorite part and some party members are better suited for different bosses. There is 1 op char for random encounters and 1 op for bosses
bazooka princess for randoms and spy master for bosses. Priestess is good for both
Leveling and equipment systems are refreshingly different armor/weapon upgrades are permanent and skills u can freely allocate and respec between party members similar to Touhou games.

Characters were mainly fine the "main" hero is an alcoholic ex pirate who keeps fucking things up constantly. Kinda mixed feeling that when they are visiting enemy stronghold / town he keeps showing middle fingers to the gate guards as an proper spy would the journey should have ended multiple times because of his actions. Dynamics between party members were okay aside from few cringey lines.

Story was good and the villain is pretty much Hitler. Jews are unloyal / weak people but not any specific ethnicity.

7.5 / 10
