Quake 2/3 are where the competitive multiplayer action is. Quake 4 is alright too but it came so late nobody played it. Everything else is crap.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire
I've never played any of the prior quake games so I can't compare to those but man this game is such a welcome departure from the standard shooters that are common today (csgo, overwatch, cod, etc). I guess I understand how some old school quake vets don't like some changes or whatever but at least there is now a modern game that has rocket jumping, bunnyhopping, wonky-ass physics, and other mechanics that make these games lots of fun.

Go check them out both games still have a playerbase although EU scene is more active than NA for both games (on the duel and TDM side at least). I wanted to do a codex arena shooter night but thesoup never updated his thread.
On one hand you have competitive shit, and in the other you have fun. What will you choose?
I choose both because I'm not a brainlet. Quake 1 is still being played competitively and there's a big LAN every year for it. Every Friday night there are people playing QW Team Fortress for when I want to just have some casual fun as well and same goes for Q2 with all of its crazy mods.

Yeah, playing with wooden blocks in a sand box vs. playing football, which is more interesting and fun

More like playing fallout vs fallout 3.

edit
oh nvm I though he was comparing qc to older quakes
But point still stands
"durr competitive" means two things:
1. you are a low-t cuck
2. you are the same type of cuck who prefers shit casual games like fallout 3 rather than a proper rpg

Crap analogy dude QC isn't 'casualized' (whatever the hell that means). Have you even played qc?

Competitive Quake (3 in my case) was probably one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've had. Because I got gud somewhat over the course of several years. Because it was deep enough that even after all these years there things to learn and optimise.

And yes, Quake Champions is the same casualised shit like all that other eSports bullcrap of our day and not worthy of its name.

Mind sharing how it's been casualised with some examples then?
Speed caps, small stacks, 3 frag limit, and character abilities that give free frags like acid spit and doomguy berserk come to mind. I also hate how they removed the grenade launcher and replaced it with that shitty tri-bolt I would much rather see handheld grenades you could cook make a return instead.

Do you even know what makes a competitive game competitive, how the meta game of duel works and why QL was king in that respect?

Having a playerbase? Pumping money into tournaments and twitch shilling?

Uhh there's a map with fixed spawns and you need to get items and shoot the other guy in the face. All present in QC.. If I'm wrong, explain?

I mean I get that those are changes that you don't like but I wouldn't really consider them to be 'casualisations'. The abilities add another layer of complexity if anything and they certainly don't dumb the game down. Also variation between champs regarding stack/speed potential complicates meta even more, which is opposite of casualisation. The slowest champs still move fast as hell and the faster ones move as quick or quicker than quake bro in previous games.

Even if you don't agree with me here we can probably agree that analogizing QL -> QC to the changes between fallout 1 and fallout 3 is either ignorant or totally dishonest.

They added layers of complexity that have almost no influence, that's called useless fluff. Meanwhile they raped map control with the lowered stacks and low cd on small armor/hp pickups. They also introduced more "no skill required for that kill" situations than overwatch.

Atm though, all of this is minor stuff, game is dying because it runs like shit.

Can't all these effects be lowered by changing the r_picmip variable, like in old Quakes?

Ehh not really, Quakeworld was always played competitively and ist still played at Quakecon, Q2 was small time from release to now:

Q3 was bigger than both and nobody ever cared about Q4... Q4 was roughly as popular as Painkiller as an E-sport = nil.

Quake 4 was played, at tournaments, by best players:

That was probably soon after it was released to promote it... Quake Live, lol. The first Quake not to have a Linux client and be Steam-exclusive :decline:

Q2 was/is definitely not small time and claiming it was is just pure revisionism for both NA and EU scenes. There are more players in a single Q2 server right now than every QW server combined. There was recently a 4v4 tournament in Poland with 12 teams and there is currently a European tournament going on with 36 players which is pretty good considering how QHLAN had 46 players and 10 4v4 teams.

Last time i played was in 2011&12, and most of the time i checked it was reversed, in fact ive never seen QW as low as it is right now... thats like hexen level playerbase...

Doesnt matter, maybe im wrong regarding the playerbase but QW was always played competetively and Q4 never got too popular.

Edit:

Checked all servers, the playerbase overall seems to have dropped massively overall, in terms of more popular games every one would be considered dead, QW, Q2, Q3, UT all dead...

Can only picmip through video drivers (or maybe some other external stuff) and it picmips players too, so not the best thing (no performance gain anyway)

The effects don't look like that at all, stop posting dishonest shit.

Yeah they do and stop posting movies from half a year ago. Not to mention 99% of the movie nobody shoots at him.
Rocket explosions completely hide everything behind them mid animation and everything glows/blooms. Combine them and you get that shit.
